June 2012 Newsletter www.hooksettkiwanis.org Hooksett NH website: www.hooksettkiwanis.org “Serving the Children of the World” www.hooksettkiwanis.org President Tom’s Message Where did spring go, it's nearly summer! School will be out in three weeks, the Key Club and Builders Clubs have been electing next year's officers. International Kiwanis will be electing new leadership next month. Everyone will be preparing for their vacation, so be prepared. Set up your plans, check them twice and don't forget to donate food to the Food Pantry as summer is the slowest time of the year for giving, yet people still need food. At our next meeting, try to bring in a few food products for the Pantry. Becky Berk. Becky lives in Hooksett and is the Quality Improvement Director for the NH Children’s trust in Concord. Many will remember Becky as the driving force in constructing Cawley Middle School. Her sponsor is Tom Young. Kathy Carlson. Kathy lives in Goffstown and is a teacher at Hillside Middle School in Manchester. She will serve as one of the Faculty Advisors to the new Builders Club at Hillside. She will also serve as one of the Faculty Advisors to the new Builders Club at Hillside. Tara is sponsored by Fred Bishop With regret, the Board also accepted the resignation of Dan Pike. The Pike’s have sold their home in Hooksett and will be relocating to Florida. This leaves our membership at 86 members, a net increase of one since October 1, 2011. The Golf Tourney is looking very strong, with 92 players committed. The new course is challenging, and in great condition and players will definitely need mulligan and strings. There is room for another 40 players so if you can help us fill the course, thank you! Next meeting will be with the Chamber of Commerce, we hope you'll make every attempt to join us. We will be auctioning off 18 Fisher Cat/ Portland Seadog tickets; tickets to White Birch Brewery's beer fest on July 14th; voting to amend our Bi-Laws to include an assistant Treasurer. As I close, let me share with you a note from Dale E. Turner, "Dreams are renewable. So far this administrative year, the Hooksett Community Food Pantry has distributed 37,618 food items valued at $52,665. This represents a 36% increase over the same period last year. Our Kid’s Kloset has distributed 5,691 articles of clothing valued at $11,382, an increase of 44% over last year. Thanks to the efforts of the Fundraising committee, the total money raised so far this year stands at $27,435, a 40% increase over last year. Lastly, due to the recent sponsorship of the Hillside Builders Club, a record number of children are now enrolled in our Service Leadership programs. This increased activity is driving a need for additional volunteers. Please see the article on the right for a list of opportunities to serve. He spoke about his new brewery and how it has grown. Members enjoyed samples of some of his products. Key Club Report by Ron Dion and Fred Bishop As mentioned last month, the Key Club sent 20 officers and members to the Annual Key Club Educational Conference in Springfield. They came away with several awards and much recognition. Central Principal Ronald Mailhot, who also attended the conference as an advisor, arranged for the Key Club to receive several citations from Mayor Gatsas at the Board of School Committee meeting at City Hall on May 14. A packed audience heard about the Key club’s many accomplishments. In his remarks, Principal Mailhot recognized Hooksett Kiwanis for its sponsorship. See photo below. recognize her accomplishments. Ron Dion paid special tributes to outgoing president Addie Curran, faculty advisor Todd Libby and Principal Ron Mailhot: “Addie had some big shoes to fill this year”. Following a four-year president, Addie needed to learn the position of president on her own”. She did a remarkable job”. Todd Libby was so deserving of receiving advisor of the year. He gives his heart and soul to this Club. I am also happy that Mr. Mailhot has been selected as Principal. He has been extremely supportive of the Key Club”. In her parting remarks, Addie said “I feel blessed to have worked with such a wonderful board. We have accomplished much this year and I thank the board, advisors, members, and parents for making the year so successful.” Principal Mailhot’s remarks were especially meaningful. He said that when he thinks about “Central Pride” he immediately thinks of the Key Club. “I love this club dearly for all that it does for Central and the community. I hope to see it grow to The biggest event in May was the annual Recognition Event held on May 24. About 75 Key Club members along with several parents attended the event. Outgoing board members received recognition plaques provided by Hooksett Kiwanis, while incoming board members (see photo) installed 3 200-300 members in the coming year, and to further diversify its membership”. and Hillside members to develop friendships prior to high school. 2. The Central Key Club is signing on as “cosponsor” for the Hillside Builders Club. This will enable it to partner with Hooksett Kiwanis as Kiwanis advisors to this Builders Club. The result is providing guidance and mentoring to Hillside members. 3.Manchester Kiwanis already sponsors four Key Clubs (Derryfield, West, Memorial, and Bedford) and the Builders Club at Derryfield. Cawley Builders Club by Ja’kiea Williams Coming together, the Builders club got together with NJHS and student council to walk for cancer. Together we all walked three miles. We tried to pump up the walking crowd with our dance moves and singing. We have also just had our last day working with the Underhill students. We also had a mother- daughter tea that turned out to be a huge hit. The Builders club crew had the kids dancing on their feet having a blast. Pending sponsorship, a group of about 35 students and 2-3 faculty advisors began operating informally as a Builders Club early in 2012. It had elected officers and was completing service projects. Thanks to Hooksett Kiwanis Board approval, the club has officially been chartered by Kiwanis International. It will have a charter presentation event 3:00PM 5:00PM at Hillside on June 15. Hooksett Kiwanis members are invited to attend. Hooksett Kiwanis and Central Key Club members will provide joint training for incoming officers and class representatives at Cawley Middle School on June 12 from 3:15PM 6:00PM. We are also very pleased that two faculty advisors have joined Hooksett Kiwanis and will be inducted at an upcoming Kiwanis meeting. Member pins and certificates will be distributed at our last regular meeting on June 6. Award plaques for board members will be presented to 6th and 7th grade members on June 6 and to 8th graders at Recognition evening on June 18. The Builders Club has a few last missions before the year comes to an end. We are hoping to raise toys for the animal shelter and were hoping to have a good 5th grade 6th grade dance on June 13. Hopefully next year the new officers can take charge of next year’s group! Newly elected officers include Caitlin White, President; Angela Moquin, Vice President; Emma Scarpa, Secretary; Elizabeth Cote & Shaye Sullivan, 8th Grade Reps; Stephanie Black & Christine Pearl, 7th Grade Reps. Kid’s Kloset Update by Joan McDonald The May open house was Monday, the 7th. There were 21 families representing 53 children. The sorting and donations have been going well and we are currently backlogged with donations, along with the changeover to summer clothing. Hillside Builders Club Hooksett Kiwanis is sponsoring a new Builders Club at Hillside Middle School in Manchester. This new club was originally going to be sponsored by Manchester Kiwanis, but Hooksett was asked if it would like to serve as its sponsor. Hillside is a very diverse middle school with approximately 1,000 students. There are three sound reasons for Hooksett Kiwanis serving as the sponsor. 1. Like Cawley Middle School, Hillside is a “feeder” school to the Key Club at Central, which is already sponsored by Hooksett Kiwanis. With joint training, an opportunity exists for Cawley We held our Kohl’s Cares day on May 5th. The Kohl’s volunteers were a great help and a pleasure to work with, for sorting, hanging, removing winter clothes and more. As well, helping that day were Irene Dion, Vivian Kotowski, Irene Bergeron, Doris Scarpetti and myself. I have finalized the on-line form to apply for the Kohl’s Cares grant. We received $300 in vouchers from the Salvation Army through Mary Farwell to purchase new socks and underwear. Irene Dion and Vivian Kotowski shopped and restocked our supply in time for the May open house night. We would like to get the word out that we would like to have a few more volunteers to help at the Kids Kloset with sorting or on open house night. This would be especially helpful to fill during summer or mid-winter vacation slots if we get behind. 4 The next open house will be Monday, June 4th, and the cards should go out the week prior. There will be a routine article submitted to the Hooksett Banner noting the monthly open house date. being children. We distributed 5,070 items to client families including dry goods, frozen meats, fresh produce and bakery. That is an average of 83 items per family or 31 items per person. We hosted 183 monthly client appointments! 29 Volunteers (including 6 Kiwanians) contributed 234 hours of support for regular client activity, administrative tasks, BJ's grant application, and operating committee meetings. We received 3,897 donated items from our Hooksett community. Large contributors included USDA, SAU15 and the Congregational Youth Group. We did use one SAV @ Walmart. Food Pantry (HCFP) Update by Barbara Brennan The HCFP committee did not meet prior to this report. There were some scheduling conflicts that prevented the committee from having their meeting on the scheduled date of May 16. We will try to get together before the end of the month if schedules allow. Stamp out Hunger was Saturday, May 12th. It was the 20th anniversary of a very worthwhile cause. We thought donations would be high for this, but there was no advertising on the post office side. This reflected in low donation numbers, or almost half of what we usually get. The HCFP committee had advertised in the Hooksett Banner, and some of the local businesses had it posted as well. Next year, we will confirm ahead of time with the post office and make sure to send out flyers to each resident if the post office does not do this. The items collected were: 1865. There were approximately 30 volunteers that gave over 100 hours. Volunteers were members of the HCFP, Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, Troop 292, and Lions Club. Thank you to all who helped out with this food drive! The next food drive will be at Underhill School on June 15. Hooksett Chamber of Commerce by Judy Barrett Hooksett Kiwanis is now a member of the Hooksett Chamber. Anyone who is in Kiwanis can attend a Chamber event. The donations coordinator is also asked to become a regular volunteer of the HCFP and be able to volunteer at least one or more times per month, depending on their schedule. Any questions you can call Barb Brennan at 674-3735. NE Kiwanis Regional Conference held at SNHU On May 5 Hooksett Kiwanis hosted a regional conference, which was intended to replace the midwinter conference. Along with our own division, there were divisions in North Central MA and the Seacoast that joined us for the day. We owe a big thank you to Dan Bennett and Dan Witham, two lieutenantgovernors who worked with Ron Dion to plan the event. Also, I would like to thank Governor Vesta Browne and Past Governor John We are looking for additional committee members beginning October 1st. We are also still looking for additional volunteers for the summer months since many of our volunteers take family time off. If you are interested in either opportunity, please call Barb Brennan at 674-3735. In April we received a $15 donation from the United Way. We had 61 client households use the HCFP made up of 160 individuals receiving food, with 53 5 Maihos for their contributions as presenters and discussion leaders. Lastly, I wish to thank Fred Bishop for his help with the Survey Monkey to enable us to learn what leaders wanted to have as sessions for this event. In our own division, there were leaders from Hooksett, Manchester, Hudson, and Claremont. It seemed to me that the event did succeed in bringing together people that we generally don't ever see at district conferences, so in that way, it was a success. Based on some of the comments that I heard, we might expect to try this format again. Thanks to everyone who gave up their time that day to give this new design a chance. advisors in the fall. Ron Dion, Fred Bishop and Kathy Dickson will meet with the Cawley Principal to secure replacement advisors. Hooksett Kiwanis Foundation Approved the Treasurer’s Report. As of April 30, there was $26,682.82 in the Foundation account and $19,469.79 in the Food Pantry account. The Board approved providing a faculty advisor stipend for the Hillside Builders Club. The Board approved booking the Dining Center at SNHU for April 20, 2013 for next year’s Community Leaders Recognition event. Board members were informed that the three bids for installing air conditioning in the existing Pantry area ranged from $7,300 to $12,800. The Board held a lengthy discussion about space for the Food Pantry at the Municipal Office building and Renewal of Hooksett Kiwanis lease agreement with the Town of Hooksett. There appear to be two distinct views, those being (a) remaining in the current location and (b) relocating into another area with more space in the Municipal building Although no decisions were made, President Tom indicated that he would call a special board meeting next week at the Town Offices to tour the two locations and to conduct vote on this matter. The Board received a brief update on the Golf Tournament. Even though the general mailing to prior years’ team captains has not been completed, the Golf Committee already has 80 players. Sue Willey provided a brief update on the 5K Race Status. The Town Council asked the Committee to see what could be done to make the event handicapped accessible. The Board approved the purchase of a “sandwich board” sign for Kid’s Kloset. This will provide directions to the Kid’s Kloset location and can be used for other Kiwanis events. Board Meeting Highlights On May 21, the Hooksett Kiwanis Club and Foundation boards held their monthly meetings. Several agenda items discussed are featured in various articles in this newsletter. A complete copy of the minutes may be found on our club website. Kiwanis Club of Hooksett The Board approved the Treasurer’s Report. As of April 30, there was $8,122.56 in the Administrative account. The Board approved requesting a booth at the Farmer’s Market with Deb Campbell to chair and to be staffed with other Kiwanis members. The Board approved requesting two booths at Old Home Day (one for Kiwanis and one for Key club), with Kiwanis chair to be named later. The Board appointed Tom Young, Dave Dickson and Judy Barrett to represent Hooksett Kiwanis at the New England District Kiwanis Convention in Leominster MA. This will include an official visit by the incoming Kiwanis International President. Ron Dion reported that he has confirmed Lt. Governor Deb Landwehr from Manchester Kiwanis to perform installation of our 2012-2013 board members at our regular meeting on October 3. John Pieroni addressed the Board, regarding the Board's directives from last meeting about trails initiatives and the upcoming meeting with the Town Council. This included renewing the 3-year agreement with the Town regarding trails construction and maintenance, involvement with other groups, and liability issues. Two objectives are receiving a hold-harmless agreement from the Town and not being mandated by the Town and/or its Conservation Commission to support certain trails initiatives. No board votes were taken. Fred reported that the Builders Club faculty advisors at Cawley are unable to continue as In addition to the regular board meeting, a special board meeting was held at the Town Offices on May 29 to address matters related to space needs for the Food Pantry. The board voted to keep the Food Pantry in its current space at the Town Offices and to secure additional storage space within this facility. The next board meetings will be held from 6:30PM – 8:00PM in the Penman room on June 25, 2012. Any Kiwanis member is invited to attend as a guest. “Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time”. 6 Editor: Fred Bishop, fredwbishop@comcast.net 7
