Background
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is an open-access festival and is the largest arts
festival in the world. In 2011 over 21,000 participants staged over 41,000
performances of more than 2,500 shows to an estimated audience of 1.9 million.
Almost 1m people are in attendance during the three-week festival which brings an
estimated £142m into Edinburgh’s economy.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society is the company that organises the structure
that underpins the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The Society exists to advise, support
and encourage all participants at the Festival Fringe, to provide comprehensive
information services, including ticketing, to its participants and the public, and to
promote the entire Fringe as a festival in the context of Edinburgh and its other
festivals. The aim for the Fringe Society is to assist audiences, performers and
venues navigate the challenges of their involvement and maximise the benefits of
their visit to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Our aim is to be a flexible, focused and creative organisation, and to that end we are
seeking to appoint a dynamic and experienced individual to the position of head of
marketing and sponsorship (reporting to chief executive). The head of marketing
and sponsorship is one of three senior managers who support and report to the chief

Roles and responsibilities
The successful candidate will perform a wide range of duties, including but not
limited to:
 Lead, deliver and manage the marketing, advertising, sponsorship and
fundraising operations of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world’s leading
arts festival.
 Develop the marketing strategy and manage all marketing campaigns, to
promote, sell tickets and support the Edinburgh Festival Fringe across all
target audiences.
 Contribute to the overall aims and ambitions of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Society, the charity that manages and runs the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to
maintain its sustainability as an open-access festival and the world’s largest
arts festival.
 Oversee and manage the production, publication and distribution of the
Edinburgh Festival Fringe Programme.
 Lead on the development and implementation of the Edinburgh Festival
Fringe brand strategy.
 Develop and manage the delivery of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe brand
online and develop its future potential as a key revenue generator.
 Lead and manage a full time team consisting of: publications manager, web
content manager, advertising and sponsorship manager, fundraising
manager and marketing assistant and work closely with freelancers,
consultants and external creative agencies.
 Maintain and develop a close working relationship with current sponsors
helping them realise the benefits of their investment.
 Attract major new sponsors and develop commercial partnerships to
maximize revenues and meet the income targets of the Edinburgh Festival
Fringe Society.
 Oversee advertising sales for all Fringe publications and website.
 Work closely with sponsors and internal project teams to deliver key Fringe
events, including the Virgin Money sponsored street events.
 Lead on the delivery and analysis of audience research including box office
sales to inform ticketing strategy, marketing and operational decision-making.
 Cultivate relationships with current and potential funders and work with and
maintain a high profile with key stakeholders including Festivals Edinburgh,
City of Edinburgh Council, Marketing Edinburgh, Creative Scotland,
VisitScotland and Scottish Enterprise.
 Lead on innovation to maintain the market leading position of the Fringe.
 Provide timely and accurate progress reports to the chief executive and
Fringe Society board as required.
 Undertake any reasonable duties as requested by the chief executive.

Personal specification
Essential
 Proven track record of team leadership at senior management level.
 Experience of managing marketing campaigns (print and digital).
 Experience of briefing and getting the best work out of creative agencies.
 Experience of developing and managing high profile commercial
sponsorships.
 Proven track record of performing within a strategic plan and budget, and
delivering excellent results.
 Strong communication, presentation and negotiating skills.
 Experience of developing, maintaining and delivering innovation on web and
mobile platforms.
 Excellent organisational and time management skills and ability to prioritise
conflicting demands across a very busy workload.
 Thorough, accurate and with excellent attention to detail.
Desirable
 Knowledge of Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
 Proven ability to inspire and motivate staff.
 Creative and flexible in response to problem solving.
 Self-motivated with willingness to contribute ideas.
 A track record of revenue generation to target.
 A proven track record of success in marketing at a national level.
Salary and benefits
The salary for this post is c£40K per annum, plus contribution towards a personal
pension. 28 days holiday per year plus public holidays.
Working hours are 10:00 to 18:00 five days a week. Some additional evening and
weekend work may be required, particularly in the run-up to and during the festival
period. There is no overtime entitlement, but the Society does maintain a TOIL
policy.
