This chart is empty to allow the teacher to place groups where they are needed at the end
of several days of work.
2J
When designing bulletin board, place group names on index cards under each center to
let the groups know daily where their center is. When it is time to rotate groups, move the
index cards to the new area/center.
I have rotated the charts attached to allow different groups in my three classes to use the
computers in a rotation fashion.
Be sure to label the “Non-computer” areas based on what phase of the unit the students
are in. For example, the first rotation involves students using computer centers 1-5 and
non computer centers of: listening center, encyclopedia center and reference center.
However, the second phase of rotation will have the quilt and or cubing activity not the
ones listed above.

The Components of the American Revolution/Civil War Unit
Each group needs to research their own area. In order to find your group you need to
know that all three classes are “mixed” together. The first name in the box is from
section 1 or class 1, Second name is Section 2, and the third name is from section 3. Find
your group and start researching. Have fun!

Computer Guidelines for creating PowerPoint Slides/Presentations:
*************WHEN I TELL YOUR GROUP THAT YOU HAVE ONLY 5 MORE MINUTES, YOU MUST GO TO
STEP 6 AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS THERE BEFORE EXITING THE PROGRAM OR ALL YOUR
HARD WORK WILL BE LOST**********
1. To design your PowerPoint slides:

Go to:

Start (click)

Microsoft PowerPoint (click) and the following screen appears.
All Programs
Teacher Resource page 8
2. Choosing the look of your slide: THE GROUP MUST DECIDE ON ONE SLIDE
DESIGN!

On the right hand side double click on “From Design Template”

Choose the slide look that YOUR GROUP wants to use

Click on the arrow to the right of the slide design that you chose

Click on “Apply to all slides”
o This will allow all of your slides to have the same look
3. Making your research slides:

Click on the title area of your slide

Type in the title of the information that you wish to present (Civil War Battle)

In the subtitle area, put what you found out about this subject
4.Going to slide 2:

At the top of the screen, go to “Insert”

Click on insert and drag down

Click on “New Slide”

A new slide will appear that looked just like the first one before you typed in it

Click on the “Title” area and put the title of the topic for this new slide

Click on the “Subtitle” area and type in the information that you learned about
this topic.

Each person will follow this format for their two slides.
5. Once all slides have been designed:
The group leader will then do the following steps:

At the top of the screen, go to “Slide Show”

Click and drag until “Slide Transition” is chosen, click on Slide Transition
The following screen appears with your first slide on the left: (ignore my Bill becomes a
law slide, it was just an example)
On the right of the screen find where it states “Apply to selected slides”

Where it states “Modify Transition” use the arrow to scroll down and choose
“slow”

Leave the check mark in the box stating to advance on mouse click

Now go back to the top where you will see: Apply to all slides:

No transition is highlighted. This means that the show will not go from one slide
to another.

Your GROUP needs to decide how the slides will go from one to another. Click
on Blinds Horizontal and watch what your slide does. Go on to Blinds Vertical,
Box In, Box Out, until you run out of choices.

Choose the one that your group likes the best OR

If your group can not decide, you can choose the last choice in this area which
states “Random Transition”. This will tell the computer to switch the slides using
a lot of the transitions you looked at in this area! This would make your slide
show different each time it is shown!

At the bottom right side choose the box:

ADVANCED USERS: Groups approved by the teacher may choose different
Apply to All Slides
transitions instead of choosing “apply to all slides”. You are to do this by
choosing a transition for slide one. Once you have chosen a transition and
modified the speed to “slow” on “mouse click” you are to go to the left of the
screen to choose slide two. Groups are to continue until all slides have been
modified for transition.
SAVING YOUR WORK:
6. You are finished designing your slide show, but you must do the following so
that all of your hard work is not lost!
Go to “File” at the top left section of the screen.

Click on “Save As”
You will see a screen that looks something like this. This is from my computer at home
which has different folders than what you will see at school!

Double click on the folder that has your group name!

For the file name at the bottom, put what I have: American Revolution and
Civil War PowerPoint

Click on save. This will save your presentation in that folder for the teacher to
look at and this is where you will locate your presentation when it is time for
you to present!
7. Now you are finally ready to VIEW YOUR POWERPOINT
PRESENTATION!

Go to top of screen and click on Slide Show, drag down and highlight
“View Show”

The presentation of your PowerPoint slides will begin. It will take
approximately 10 seconds for the slides to change. Do not click on
anything. If it does not move to the next slide after 10 seconds, you need
the teacher’s help.

After the slide show is finished, click any key on the keyboard or click the
mouse. You will return to the planning part of the PowerPoint designing
area.
8. If there is something that you do not care for in the presentation or if you
find mistakes, this is how you fix it:

On the left of your large slide, you will see smaller slides that are
numbered.

Click on each slide until you find the one with the mistake.

Fix the mistake

Be sure to do the following for the mistakes to be
permanently fixed!
o At the top of the screen, go to “File”
o Click and drag down until you highlight “SAVE”
o Be sure NOT to choose save AS!
o Click on “save” which will save the corrections you made as well
as the slides that were not in need of fixing
Go back to page 6 of this handout and view the slide show again.
9. How to get out of PowerPoint:
o Click on the red X at the top right section of the screen. It will bring you back
to the desktop which allows the next group to start from the beginning.
10. If at any time you are confused and your group can not decide what to do- get
the teacher! You are in the process of learning, do not be afraid to ask for help!
But, be sure your group has tried to solve the problem first and you have tried
everything on this handout before consulting the teacher!
