2015-2016 Student Council Elections
We will be holding officer and representative elections
during the month of September. You will need to attend
several meetings and fill out all necessary paperwork.
The following pages in the packet will provide you with
much of the information you will need in order to become
a member.
In 8th grade, we will be electing three officers and 12
representatives (6 from each team having 3 boys and 3
girls).
In 7th grade, we will be electing two officers and 12
representatives (6 from each team having 3 boys and 3
girls).
*The candidate who comes in second place for each
of the officer positions in both 7th and 8th grade, will
automatically become a member of the Board of
Directors.
In 6th grade, we will be holding elections for 12
representatives (6 from each team having 3 boys and 3
girls).
All paperwork and information can be found on the
Student Council Website under the Activities Tab.
Team Representative & Officer Schedule
September 8th-10th– Meetings for any student interested in running for Team
Representative or Office after school in room 110.
September 16th – Meeting for all candidates after school in room 110. All
paperwork is due at this time. Paperwork may be handed in early. No
exceptions will be made.
September 22nd – There will be a meeting in room 110 with all those running
for Student Council positions beginning at 2:50.
September 25th– Campaign speeches will be delivered in the auditorium for
those running to be an officer. The times will be determined as soon as
possible. Voting will take place that day.
September 29th – All Representative speeches will be viewed and voting will
take place.

Officer Positions
A Student Council officer should be someone who is leader and will stand up for
what is right. An officer is someone who will help make MJS a better place. They
will have to give up a lot of time to make MJS a better place.

7 Grade Secretary/Treasurer & 8 Grade Secretary Treasurer - The role of
the officer is as follows:

Writing letters or e-mails of appreciation to guest speakers.

Write thank you letters to anyone who has supported our school or
organization.
 Maintaining and distributing a roster of committees and their chairs with
addresses and phone numbers. The roster should be distributed at the
beginning of each year (or whenever changes are made) to members)
 Maintaining the attendance roster for the grade
 To help change the front sign each month.
 Keep track of receipts, the cash box, and be in charge of ticket sales at all
events

7 Grade Chairperson - The Chairperson must do the following:
 assist the President and Advisor in various tasks, as necessary.
 To preside over grade level meetings and establish or chair committees
 Conduct surveys to determine issues relevant to all of you
 prepare and deliver reports to each meeting of the General Assembly, to
inform its’ members of major Student Council activities and inspire their
active participation in them.
 And finally, they are to represent you and your ideas and be sure to
communicate them to the Student Council.

8 Grade Vice-President - The vice- president must do the following:
 assist the President and Advisor in various tasks, as necessary.
 To preside over meetings of the General Assembly in the absence of the
President.
 To be ready at all times to temporarily or permanently become President.
 do the daily morning announcements if the President is absent
 Assign selling and other work duties that take place during lunch periods to
all members of the Executive Board, and to supervise all student workers as
they perform these duties.
 prepare and deliver reports to each meeting of the General Assembly, to
inform its’ members of major Student Council activities and inspire their
active participation in them.
 maintains a file of materials about all activities

8 Grade President - The job of being President is demanding and includes all of
these responsibilities:

To prepare an agenda for each meeting of the General Assembly after
consulting with the other officers, committee chairpersons, and Advisor.
To preside over meetings of the General Assembly, ensuring a fair and full
hearing to all concerns and the maintenance of order at all times.
To appoint individuals (with consent of the Advisor) to chair standing and
special committees, and to monitor the progress of each committee.

 Attend all Student Council meetings and take notes.
 Consult with Team Leaders to determine when each student
will be allowed to leave class for certain events.
 Plan, organize, and conduct team meetings.
 Work on all student council committees and projects.
 Follow through on all student council responsibilities.
 Support all activities and projects by being actively involved.
 Introduce new ideas and events that can benefit the school
and your team.
 Consult with your Team Leader on proper times and events
that can benefit your team.

PART II: Speech
The following is an outline of what we expect you to address in your speech. Please answer the
following questions in paragraph form to the best of your ability. Write this essay in the form
of a speech. Include an opening and closing that you will use when making your speech to your
fellow classmates. This application will be reviewed by the Student Council Advisors. This
must be typed and handed in. You should save this file on your computer since you will need to
make several edits.
1. Why do you want to be on the Student Council?
2. What qualifications do you have that would make you a good Student Council member?
3. How would you improve school spirit?
4. Propose and describe one-two things that you would do to improve the Madison Jr. School.
Tips









Speeches are to be a minute and a half or less
Get right to the point, because you will not have much time
No unrealistic promises or inappropriate content
Be credible, be organized, and be yourself
Revise your speech multiple times
Believe in what you are saying, and add some oomph or pizzazz
Have an intro, body, and conclusion
Have an intro that captures the audience’s attention
Keep your audience interested, not bored
Part III: ACCEPTANCE OF POLICY
Read each paragraph below carefully and then sign at the end of each section to indicate your full
understanding and acceptance of responsibility and commitment to the position desired. Have your
parents review this application. Then have them sign below to indicate their understanding of your
responsibilities.

THIRD: Removal from Office
Excerpted from Article 5 of the Constitution:
I. Attendance
1. All members of the Student Government are allowed (1) unexcused absence.
2. If a member misses more than (1) unexcused absence they shall have to put into
writing a written request to the Executive Board not to be impeached of their duties.
Exceptions:
1. Sickness
2. Death in the family
3. Written request not be at the meeting
Any member of the Student Council who has consistently failed to carry out his or her duties, or
who has failed to uphold its standards of ethics and behavior, may be removed as follows:
a. Any member that is removed from a meeting due to disciplinary reasons by the
President, or Advisor with consent of the Executive Board will be referred to the Advisor
who has the power to remove them for the rest of the year.
b. Any member who receives an out of school suspension will be removed from the
Student Council.
c. Any member who fails to meet the grade requirement (passing all subjects with at least
a minimum 70% average) will be put on probation. The student must show improvement
when the next grade report comes out whether it be a progress report or report card.
d. Any member who does not participate in Student Council activities is also subject to
removal.
e. Students who receive and ISS, a TOR Discipline report, or administration detention
will be referred to the Advisors who will determine if the student should be removed.
