(Cash or check payable to Leland School.) All team members must have a matching team shirt. Shirts can also be handmade instead of purchased) Dear Leland Families, We are happy to announce the start of the 2015 Battle of the Books program. This exciting literacy activity is offered by our school district to provide an opportunity for our students to read and report on challenging titles as they prepare to compete with other Leland classmates in the spring contest. This activity is open to all fifth thru eighth graders who enjoy literature and are willing to read and report on a minimum of 3 books from this year’s Battle list. Students are asked to create a team with no more than five of their peers. Teams will then be scheduled to compete against each other. OK…what does my child need to do? 1. Sign and return the attached permission slip to Mrs. Hamer. 2. Read at least three books on this year’s battle list and take the appropriate Accelerated Reader test for that book. Students are required to pass this test in order for the book to count as one of their three titles. Even though only three books are required to participate, the more books read the higher the chances are to advance in the competition. 3. Complete Battle of the Books Reading Log sheet for each book read. 4. Continue reading books until competition day (Friday, April 17th). 5. Optional – turn in $10 for team t-shirt or create a team shirt with your team. Shirts will be purchased from www.woot.com and will be “literature” related and school appropriate. Battle of the Books is an activity that challenges children in all areas of literacy. The children need the support and encouragement of their families to ensure success. We are looking forward to this fun and challenging reading activity.
