ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
MASTER OF PREVENTIVE VETERINARY MEDICINE
Due to the scholastic requirements and scheduling of the MPVM program, it is essential for
students to be proficient in the English language. Major problems encountered by many foreign
students whose English language skills are deficient are: 1) inability to understand lectures; 2)
inability to determine main components of lectures; 3) difficulty in reading and abstracting major
data; 4) difficulty in reading fast enough to complete assignments; 5) difficulty in writing essaytype answers in examinations; and 6) difficulty in organizing material from different sources for
writing papers.
THERE ARE TWO BASIC ENGLISH REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION:
I.
Non-native English speaking applicants must provide TOEFL scores from a test taken
within the past six months. The minimum test score required for admission to the
MPVM program is 600 paper-based/250 computer-based/100internet-based tests.
II.
Prior to the beginning of their first quarter of enrollment on the Davis campus, all
international students whose native language is not English, regardless of TOEFL score,
are required to take the English Entrance Examination given by the English Department
at the University of California, Davis. Typically, the examination is offered in mid
September. If the student passes the exam, no further English course will be required, if
the student does not receive a passing score, one of the following decisions will be
made:
a.
The student will be required to enroll in the English course for one quarter. This
student may have difficulty carrying a full academic load during this first quarter.
b.
The student will be required to enroll in English courses for two quarters. This
student may have difficulty carrying a sufficient academic load to complete the
program in one year. This student, if not able to complete the program in the first
year, has two options:
1.
Providing the student is in good academic standing, continue a second
year to complete the requirements for the degree.
2.
Receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the first year providing a
satisfactory level of academic performance is maintained.
Students who participate in the two-year program must be prepared to pay an additional year’s
registration fees, nonresident tuition (if applicable). professional school fee and living expenses.
