Message Stick: Talking Stick: Climate Change
Sunday, 17 May 2009
Over the next six weeks Message Stick presents a new
series of studio chat programs called Talking Stick. In
this series, presenter Miriam Corowa speaks to
Indigenous and non-Indigenous insiders to discuss six
topics of interest to all Australians.
From the vexed subjects of Aboriginal health,
education and justice, to national and international
success in sport and music and the impact of climate
change on communities across the country, Talking
Stick provides a candid assessment of the state of the Indigenous nation.
In episode two, Climate Change, the Indigenous perspective on this serious environmental
issue – one of our greatest threats to survival - is considered. Predictions of devastating
weather patterns and rising sea levels are already beginning to unfold and our shared future
will depend on our ability to adapt and find new ways of living in harmony with the
environment. As the world's oldest surviving culture, and one which has lived the principles of
environmental sustainability for thousands of years, Indigenous Australians offer a profound
depth of traditional knowledge.
But nonetheless, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices struggle to be heard in debates
about water scarcity, carbon trading and the protection of our natural landscapes and wildlife.
Miriam Corowa discusses these issues with three people who are on the frontline of change Joe Morrison, Chief Executive Officer with the North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea
Management Alliance; Steven Ross, the Coordinator of the Murray Lower Darling Rivers
Indigenous Nations; and Dr Donna Green, a research fellow with the UNSW Climate Change
Research Centre. Her wide-ranging study interests include the impact of climate change on
remote Indigenous communities in Australia's north.

Gorillas Revisited With David Attenborough
Sunday, 17 May 2009
Sir David Attenborough’s encounter with mountain
gorillas during the filming of Life On Earth (1978) is one
of the greatest moments in television history. In this
journey of re-discovery, Sir David recounts his very
personal experiences with the mountain gorillas of
Rwanda.
Ever since they were discovered over a century ago,
the gorillas have been threatened by loss of habitat,
poaching, disease and political instability. But despite
all odds their numbers have increased.
Sir David tells the extraordinary story of how conservationists like the late Dian Fossey have
battled to save the mountain gorilla from the brink of extinction. His remarkable story reveals
how these magnificent great apes have triumphed over adversity to become the conservation
success they are today.

foreign take-over threat to AEL, seemingly implicating
his father-in-law for once and all which could close CCR
for good. Before Brian goes, Megan acknowledges her
feelings for him and the difficulty she is having dealing
with them.
Back at CCR, with a vital copper order already badly
delayed, Max and Shane investigate mine-workers’
concerns over a faulty cage-lift. With the lift finally
fixed, Megan has a bruising encounter with Max. Despite Max’s confidence that the mine can
re-open Megan remains concerned that Max might be compromising safety in order to make
up for lost time.
Meanwhile, Caz’s pursuit of rare fossils finds her caught up in a terrifying situation that not
only turns her world upside down but also draws her closer to Shane than she could ever have
imagined.

Compass: The Retreat Pt. 2
Sunday, 17 May 2009
This series allows viewers an inside look at the spiritual
side of Islam. Three British men and three British
women leave their lives behind to embark on a soul
searching, thought-provoking and life-changing
journey.
The British Muslim community is diverse and
encompasses many ethnic groups. This program aims
to break some of the stereotypes and misconceptions
surrounding the Islamic faith. Made up of people from
a variety of backgrounds, the group includes lapsed Muslims, casual followers, recent converts
and the totally uninitiated, all seeking to gain a deeper understanding of the faith.
Spending four weeks living in a Muslim retreat, in a beautiful but remote Islamic madrassa in
Andalusia, Spain, the group will follow a more traditional, slower pace of life. As well as being
offered guidance by the school, they will also meet with key teachers of Islam from the UK.
Their focus will be to worship Allah, and to become more thoughtful, gentler, kinder
individuals.
But with strict rules to follow and none of the comforts of Western living, the road to
enlightenment is not going to be easy. Daily filming and personal video diaries give us a true
insight into the thoughts and feelings of our contributors as they undergo this amazing
experience.
It’s now 10 days into The Retreat. While Azim, Pom and Khadijah have immersed themselves
in the intense daily routine of prayer, silent contemplation and spiritually uplifting work,
Muddassar and Simon are both struggling – Muddassar to cope without his mobile phones
and Simon to engage with his heart rather than his head. Aisha, however, is not engaging at
all. She is a fervent Muslim, but claims some of the religious practices on the retreat are Bid‘ah
– a deviation from Qu’ranic rules. To try and defuse the mounting tension within the group,
retreat leader Abdullah Trevathan takes them on a two day visit to nearby Morocco. But will
experiencing Islam in action have the desired effect?

A new peace accord between Britain, America and Iran
is threatened when armed infiltrators hijack a
television broadcast.
Secret diplomacy between the UK, USA and Iran has
brought the trio to the brink of a pact that would avert
a catastrophic war. Representatives of the three
nations assemble for a live television broadcast to
announce the agreement, whereby Iran will suspend its
uranium-enrichment programme.
By using his incarcerated wife, Ana (Agni Scott) as coercion, Ros (Hermione Norris) convinces
Iranian Special Consul Bakhshi (Simon Abkarian) to persuade his government to agree to the
accord and for him to appear at the announcement. But as the live transmission goes to air,
armed infiltrators hijack the broadcast, demanding that transmission not be cut.
The leader, Paul Mills (Mark Bazeley), reveals that he knows Iran already has full nuclear
capability and that the peace accord is a sham, cooked up by Western powers desperate to
avoid yet more military confrontation.
Adam (Rupert Penry-Jones) and Ros, in the studio audience for the broadcast, must defuse the
situation before someone is hurt, while back on the Grid the rest of the team investigate the
hijackers’ identities and possible motivation.
Meanwhile, Malcolm (Hugh Simon) must try to cut the transmission while convincing the
infiltrators that they are still on air – if Paul Mills’s revelations become public knowledge then
the global ramifications would be disastrous.
Ben Kaplan (Alex Lanipekun), also in the studio but hidden, creates a diversion so that Adam
and Ros can charge at the infiltrators. In the chaos that follows, Bakhshi is shot and begs the
team to look after his wife, unwittingly revealing to Adam that she is still alive, and that Harry
(Peter Firth) and Ros have lied to him.

Artscape: Artists At Work: Josh Yeldham
Tuesday, 19 May 2009
Artists At Work invites you up the Hawkesbury River in
NSW for an intimate and spiritual journey by boat, to a
place where nature, art and fertility prayers collide. As
Josh Yeldham creates new work for an upcoming
exhibition, we gain a rare insight into the craft, process
and philosophy behind his art. In this spectacularly
beautiful landscape, abstract paintings, works on paper
and totemic owl sculptures are created in nature with
almost shamanistic intention.
This documentary reveals the influence that Yeldham’s family life has on his current body of
work. After the difficulties he and his wife Jo experienced falling pregnant, many of his works
are conceived as fertility offerings.
Now with the birth of their second child imminent, Yeldham is making two new pieces: a
painting - Mother with Baby Owl, and a landscape work on paper called Wild Bird Rock. These
two creations represent his final offerings to nature in the hope that their unborn baby will be
given safe passage.
Using a sander and even a solar powered dental drill to stunning effect, Yeldham is embarking
upon a daring new shift in style. Looking for a much more textural approach, we see him
carving into both paper and clay board to create the topographical illusion of ridges, gullies
and creeks. A carved, almost indigenous dotting technique also gives rise to an owl abundantly
filled with lilies, seed pods and bush flowers.
The addition of 3D sculptural elements, moveable prayer wheels and even the radical addition
of stringed musical components is a new approach that Yeldham hopes will impress rather
than shock at an upcoming private collectors’ preview.

Body Identity
Why would anybody freeze off their own perfectly
healthy leg? For most of us, losing a limb would be
disastrous. But some rare individuals actually want
amputation – and will go to extreme lengths to get it.
Jonica Newby meets Robert Vickers, a man who froze
his left leg with dry ice, in order to force doctors to
amputate it. What was once considered to be the act
of the psychologically disturbed has now been
recognised as a very rare condition called Body
Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID). To enter this strange world Jonica takes part in an
experiment that tricks her into thinking she has swapped her body with Robert’s. She also
discovers just how fragile the awareness of her own body really is.
Robot Biomimicry
The robot revolution hasn’t happened yet. But scientists at the University of California
Berkeley are convinced their new way of designing and building robots will offer a world
breakthrough in robot design. Their study of living organisms has offered a simple insight into
structure, form and movement - which they’ve adapted to the world’s first robotic cockroach.
They hope that what they’ve learnt might make robots ubiquitous and part of our everyday
lives. Graham Phillips discovers how the ingenuity of nature may help develop technology that
in a few years may make that robot revolution truly arrive.
Sports Motion
Today the difference between competitors can be measured in fractions of a second, and
slight tweaks to technique could mean winning gold over silver. Sports engineers at Griffith
University in Queensland have developed a matchbox-sized device which measures an
athlete’s expenditure of power, direction of movement and efficiency of performance – while
they’re training – so that they can adjust their performance. Maryanne Demasi heads to
Queensland to put herself and the device through their paces.

Cracking The Maya Code
Thursday, 21 May 2009
Cracking The Maya Code is arguably one of the
greatest of all archaeological detective stories.
The Maya script is the New World’s most highly
developed ancient writing system. Records of this
written language were all but destroyed by European
conquerors, who burned an untold number of Maya
books. Today, only four known, partial examples
survive.
The ancient Maya civilisation of Central America left behind an intricate and mysterious
hieroglyphic script, carved on monuments, painted on pottery and drawn in hand-made barkpaper books.
For centuries scholars considered it too complex ever to understand – until recently when an
ingenious series of breakthroughs finally cracked the code and unleashed a torrent of new
insights into the Maya’s turbulent past.
Unlike the Rosetta Stone, which unlocked the secrets of Egyptian hieroglyphs in practically
one fell swoop, deciphering the Maya script involved a long series of hunches and tantalising
insights as well as false leads, blind alleys and heated disagreements among scholars.
Cracking The Maya Code presents the epic inside story of how the decoding was done and
what Maya writings now reveal.
As Maya inscriptions were slowly deciphered it became clear that this was an empire of divine
rule and blood sacrifice, with warrior-kings waging constant battles, conquest and power
struggles with rival lords.
Today, the decoders are working with the descendants of the ancient Maya to link their
spoken language with the deciphered glyphs, and modern Maya are reclaiming the rich and
complicated history that has finally been unlocked.

Silent Witness: Safe
Friday, 22 May 2009
New Series
The award-winning pathology drama Silent Witness
returns for a gripping 12th series with 6 riveting new
episodes. Emilia Fox, William Gaminara and Tom Ward
are back as the team of forensic pathologists,
uncovering the truth behind suspicious deaths in one
of the most successful and long-running crime dramas.
To forensic pathologists Professor Leo Dalton (William
Gaminara), Dr Harry Cunningham (Tom Ward) and Dr
Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox), every body tells a story:
who they were, how they lived, and most importantly, how they died. The dead person’s
history is there to be discovered and the body is the key to unlocking the story.
In this opening episode we see Leo arrested for drink-driving. The end result is that he finds
himself doing community service on a rough London estate, where gang violence among kids
is common. When Nikki investigates the murder of a young girl from the same estate, Leo
finds himself in the midst of a violent turf war.
Elsewhere, Harry mentors an eager medical student who seems more interested in the media
frenzy over his latest case than pathology. But when information about the death of the
journalist is leaked, Harry finds himself drawn into a tangle with a Russian oligarch. And when
Nikki investigates an armed raid on a terrorist cell, she faces increasing police hostility to her
investigation as she begins to suspect the victims are innocent….

(Cat Simmons) investigate a serious assault on a cab
driver.
A travel card found at the scene leads them to two
sisters - one with a baby - battling to survive in their

so Smithy enlists the help of an old friend, Leanne
Samuels (Lorna Brown), who runs the centre where one of them works. Leanne and Smithy
met when her daughter was murdered a year before, and bonded as a result. However, even
with Leanne’s help the girls’ story is confusing, but it’s the true extent of the victim’s injuries
that is the key to what happened
Saturday May 23, 9:15pm – Ep 658 – Bleeding Heart
PCs Nate Roberts (Ben Richards) and Ben Gayle (Micah Balfour) respond to an attempted
break-in, but suspect that the daughter of the house may have had a party and not told her

ambulance, Maria Joseph (Rachel McDowall), recognises him as a friend of her brother’s.
Nate finds himself attracted to Maria, and is anxious to follow any other leads, so he asks to
talk to her brother.
Enquiries are made at a local football club where both boys are members, and suspicion falls
on a drug dealer who has been frequenting the club trying to recruit young men.

The New Inventors
Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors brings you the best in new Australian inventions.
From exciting innovations to eccentric designs, inventors across the country are working to
improve the way we live. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: agricultural scientist
Chris Russell, science broadcaster Bernie Hobbs, and designer and inventor Sally Dominguez.
Inventions featured on the program:
Invention 1 HOOLEY DOOLEY – by inventor Lionel Clyve Thomas from VIC. The invention of the
fridge has revolutionised the way we live. However, when it comes to outdoor events, large
fridges are awkward and difficult to move. The Hooley Dooley is a portable system for outdoor
catering and events. The invention is easily erected and dismantled so that it can be conveniently
moved from site to site. What's more, it is a modular system that incorporates both heating and
cooling compartments, creating a versatile design that can handle all food types. The Hooley
Dooley can be assembled in approximately five minutes, and requires no tools. The invention can
then be collapsed into a portable unit for the next job.
Invention 2 BED BUG BARRIER – by inventor Tony Abrahams from VIC. Bed bugs are not just a
problem for backpackers anymore, with infestations rising 4500% across the community since
1999. Bed bugs cannot fly, so the easiest route to their evening meal is to crawl up the legs of a
bed. The Bed Bug Barrier prevents bites by blocking the bugs’ access to the bed. The invention is
easily attached to the bed legs in a manner that is discreet and will not attract the attention of
hotel guests. The bed bugs crawl up into the unit, where they are trapped inside by an impassable
barrier glue. The bugs cannot escape and will die inside the trap, out of sight of the room
occupant. The barrier glue is made of safe, non-toxic gums, oil and tree residue, and will last for
years before it needs to be replaced, making it an effective and affordable solution.
Invention 3 BEEHIVE SCALES – by inventor Andrew Janiak from VIC. Beekeepers need to keep a
constant check on the health of their hives, but opening them too often can be disruptive for the
colony. One solution is to weigh the hives, which indicates how much honey is inside. However,
the hives can be heavy, and lifting them repeatedly is bad for your back. Beehive Scales is a twopart system that allows quick, low cost weighing of beehives in a manner that saves the health of
the bees and the beekeepers. The invention consists of a simple hinged timber platform that sits
permanently under each hive, and a portable scale. The scale is inserted between the two halves
of the platform, and the handle is lifted to determine the weight. The scale has 1:10 leverage,
which means you only need to lift one tenth of the actual weight of the hive. The device is also
designed so that you cannot lift the hive more than an inch, resulting in minimal disturbance to the
bees and limited strain for the beekeeper’s back.
