Our presenter works with National speed skaters, NHL goalies, hockey players, dancers, figure skaters, gymnasts and all sorts of athletes. 2. CTS and P.E. Jr./Sr. Presenter: Mark Bylsma, CBE Specialist for Health, Physical Education and Career & Life Management In this session we’ll discuss some of the possibilities for combining CTS offerings with a PE offering and stand-alone CTS offerings that can complement Physical Education. We’ll also briefly look at the basics of C.T.S. and the potential flexibility its structure can offer. Time will also be provided for Q & A. General 3. The TANGO...Fast to Learn, Easy to Teach & So Much Fun to Watch Students Dance Presenters: Paul & Christina Marlett, DANCING JOCKS Tango is one of those dances that is quickly gaining popularity in the west. You will leave this session with a full unit plan and the skills to teach it quickly and effectively with confidence. Active session, no special shoes or V-Neck shirts required... roses optional. Paul and Christina have been delivering Dance Workshops for over 10 years around the province. Recently they founded DANCING JOCKS, where their mission is to make teaching social dance as easy as dodgeball. Presenter: Kalynn Park, Rings and Rocks Calgary Instructor The Capital One Rocks & Rings program is one of the fastest growing school programs in Canada. The Rocks & Rings program introduces your students to the sport of curling in just one day, using special indoor floor curling equipment supplied by the instructors. Come learn what a fun day of high energy activities for children between the ages of 5-13 could look like and participate in curling-type activities with the Rocks and Rings equipment. Spark for Learning: Effects of Daily Physical Activity on the Learning, Behavior and Attention of Children with ADHD Elem/Jr Presenters: Michelle Deen, Special Ed, St. Anthony School and Nancy Jarvis, HPEC RR for Calgary, Catherine Nichols Gunn School Learn about this innovative program, inspired by Dr. John Ratey’s book SPARK, underway at St. Anthony School and Catherine Nichols Gunn School. The session will present a brief overview of Michelle Deen’s recent research that shows how physical exercise can be used to spark learning, sharpen focus and improve behavior. More importantly, Michelle and Nancy will share tips and tricks from the trenches (or rather, hallways and the gym) about how to implement a manageable and enjoyable SPARK program in your classroom or school. 6. Lacrosse 4-6/ Jr/Sr Presenter: Rick Windl, NCCP Lacrosse Facilitator Spice up your Phys. Ed program with Canada’s National sport. Learn basic lacrosse skills, drills, rules and concepts in this fun games approach. Come ready to participate outdoors – weather permitting. 7. Mental Health Tool Kit General Presenter: Jessica Badzgon, CCSD Comprehensive School Health Consultant This session will provide educators with an in-depth overview of the newly launched Mental Health Tool kit from the Joint Consortium for School Health. The resource highlights how to support and promote the metal health component of a Comprehensive School health approach. If you are looking for ways to support student wellbeing, and ways of creating positive social environments, this session is for you. SESSION B (5:35 to 6:35) 8. Rugby Jr/Sr Presenter: Shawn Blakey, Rugby Coach at Sir Winston Churchill Come experience some basic rugby with ball handing drills and concepts central to the game. Project Adventure in Practice Elem/Jr Presenter: Shannon Wagner, CBE Middle School Teacher at Farview School . Having difficulties finding fun and challenging ways to incorporate the ends into Physical Education classes? Here is a fun way to help students work on personal development while learning lifelong skills such as communication, cooperation, teamwork and problem solving. In this session you will have an opportunity to participate in a series of activities that will move from cooperative warm-ups to problem-solving initiatives. All activities presented are meant to be used in a group setting with a set of values established to maximize each person’s learning. 11. Aussie X Elem/Jr Presenter: Chris Knight, The Aussie X This session is an introduction to the Aussie X, and how it brings new sports, new culture and energy into Canadian schools. Chris will present details of each sport, demonstrating the skills, rules and game play of FOOTY, NETBALL and CRICKET. Aussie X presents much more than just a new sport but a complete new learning experience of fun, culture and virtues through play and talented instructors 12. Movement for the Masses Elem/Jr Presenter: Joyce Sunada, Ever Active Schools Looking for ways to motivate large groups in your physical education class? Do you have limited space to engage students? Teaching large classes in physical education can be challenging but not impossible. Come join us in this workshop and leave with strategies and activities linking to the outcome in P.E. that will keep your students moving and engaged. Elem/Jr/Sr Presenter: Mark Bylsma, CBE Specialist for Health, Physical Education and Career & Life Management This session is intended to be a conversation about the future of Physical Education in Alberta. Knowing that Alberta Education is currently working on revising the Physical Education Program of Studies, this session is an opportunity to look at where Physical Education may be going and to discuss what you feel would be important to include in a revised program of studies. We’ll also consider current educational philosophy and look at documents like Alberta Education’s Student Learning Framework, the Framework for K-12 Wellness Education, and our understanding of personalized learning to provide some additional context for this conversation. 14. Thriller General Presenter: Sarah Stempfle, High School PE Teacher at Fr. Lacombe Are you looking for an exciting way to incorporate dance into your Physical Education program or a new way to include DPA for your class? Come on out to learn the moves to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" dance! It is inclusive to all ages and levels literally ANYONE can learn to dance to Thriller. At this session you will learn about the "Thrill the World" resource, as well as a dance script which combines words which are said out loud while dancing in order to remember the steps and to keep on time with the music.
