IBM WebSphere Portal Version 6.1 FAQ
For IBM Internal Use Only
IBM WebSphere Portal Version 6.1 Offering Overview
Q. What is IBM WebSphere Portal?
A. Web portals allow partners, employees and customers to chose their user experience, with
personalized applications based on role, context, actions, location, preferences and team collaboration
needs. IBM WebSphere Portal software provides a composite application or business mashup framework
and the advanced tooling needed to build flexible, SOA-based solutions, as well as the unmatched
scalability required by any size organization.
WebSphere Portal software delivers these business benefits while getting you started with Service
Oriented Architecture (SOA) goals. SOA implementations leverage open standards to represent IT and
LOB assets as standards-based services independent of the platforms they operate on, and they use an
architectural style that supports integrating your business as linked, repeatable business tasks, or
services. WebSphere Portal software helps you create and maintain these services as portlets, which are
grouped and presented to users as composite applications that are delivered in the context of a given role
or task to be executed. The end result can be that tasks are executed more efficiently, because IT can
deploy customized composite applications quickly and businesses can use existing assets to support
changing business requirements.
WebSphere Portal brings together a range of leading-edge technologies designed to give you a flexible,
open, extensible framework to build successful business-to-employee (B2E), business-to-business (B2B)
and business-to-consumer (B2C) portals. By providing industry-leading portal solutions for your on
demand business, IBM helps you improve employee productivity, cut costs and strengthen relationships
with your customers and trading partners.

Q. If a Portal customer is under current maintenance, do they get V6.1 for free?
A. Yes
IBM WebSphere Portal Version 6.1 FAQ
For IBM Internal Use Only
Q. Can customers tradeup from WebSphere Portal Server Version 6.1 to WebSphere Portal
Version 6.1 Enable or Extend?
A. Yes. There are part numbers set up in passport so customers can trade-up from Server to Enable,
Server to Extend and Enable to Extend. If a customer wishes to convert from Portal Server per user
license to a Processor Value Unit license of Portal Server the request needs to be submitted via special
bid.
Q. What support exists for customers who wish to install a copy of WebSphere Portal for backup
purposes – for example to manage server failure and failover situations if they occur? Are they
required to purchase another software license for this purpose?
A. If a customer wishes to install the software on a machine for back-up purposes only and it is NOT
active in any way it falls under a “warm use” definition and there is no charge. In this case the customer
would have a delay before it could switch over to use this back-up server in a production mode as it would
take time to update the data files etc. If the server is mirroring transactions/updating files, synchronizing
data etc. it will require a separate license.
As a practice we have the following definitions and allowable actions concerning the copy of the program
used for backup purposes:
•
Cold - a copy of the program may be stored for backup purposes on a machine as
long as the program has not been started. There is no charge for this copy.
•
Warm - a copy of the program may reside for backup purposes on a machine and
is started, but is "idling", and is not doing any work of any kind. There is no charge
for this copy.
•
Hot - a copy of the program may reside for backup purposes on a machine, is
started and is doing work. However, this program must be ordered. There is a
charge for this copy.
Relationship with other IBM Offerings:
Q: Is WebSphere Portal Version 6.1 appropriate for Notes/Domino customers?
A: Yes. WebSphere Portal Version 6.1 software provides value to many of your Notes/Domino
customers and represents a natural evolution to a portal-based application environment. Notes and
Domino customers can leverage WebSphere Portal software as a strategic integration platform and
control point for all applications, including Lotus Domino. WebSphere Portal leverages customer’s
existing investment in Domino applications by functioning as the delivery vehicle for virtually all
applications, collaboration, content, and information. Integration portlets for mail, calendar and
applications, integraration wizards, Web services support and updated portlets can make it easier to
re-use existing Domino-software-based assets within Portal based applications. WebSphere Portal
6.1 support for Live Text tags is also exposed to Lotus Notes 8.0.1 clients, providing common
technology to create a highly contextual user experience, in which words, names and other text can
be tagged and linked to relevant actions or information. In this way the combination of Lotus Domino
and WebSphere Portal can help customers improve employee productivity, lower application
deployment costs, expand the utility of applications through re-use, which can help enable faster
responsiveness and strengthen relationships with their customers and trading partners.

vision IBM has been awarded the leadership position in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Portals 2006,
2007 and again in 2008, for the 7th consecutive year. According to Gartner*, WebSphere Portal has been
successfully deployed by a large customer base across a wide range of complex deployment scenarios,
including high-scalability environments.
WebSphere Portal supports mashup creation (via Lotus IBM Mashup Center) and leverages other
complementary offerings, including Lotus Connections (for social networking), to injectWeb 2.0
technologies into the enterprise IBM (Obtained from report: Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portal
Products, 2008 Gartner, 9-12-2008)
With over 6000 customers, IBM has many customer references from some of the world’s largest portal
deployments. We also have data from the competitive project office that shows that WebSphere and
WebSphere Portal can handle more requests and transactions than other vendors.

Miscellaneous Product Questions
Q: What components, currently included in the WebSphere Portal, Version 6.0, are no longer
included in the Version 6.1 release?
A: Some components of WebSphere Portal, Version 6.0, are not included in WebSphere Portal, Version
6.1 and future versions. In most cases, the components are being replaced by new
technology/components that provide greater value to customers. In some other cases, customers did not
recognize the value of the components and have not deployed them widely. Therefore, it makes sense to
invest in other areas so we can deliver value that will be recognized and deployed by Portal customers.
IBM will not include the following components, currently included in one or more of the WebSphere Portal
Version 6.0 Server, Enable and Extend, Express and WebSphere Portal Enable for z/OS Version
releases in the next releases of WebSphere Portal, Version 6.1 offerings.

Workflow Builder portlet (included with WebSphere Portal Server 6.0 Extend)
The Workflow Builder provided a pre-defined set of task definition and view capabilities to enable user
based creation of simple, sequential workflows not requiring transactional processing. In most cases,
customers found their workflow requirements more complex than the capabilities exposed in the
Workflow Builder technology.
To match customer requirements IBM continues to invest in usability and features of the portal’s Task
List portlet, provided in the WebSphere Portal Enable and Extend release since Version 5.1. The
Task List portlet provides a central inbox for management of role-driven user workflow, and includes
APIs for custom integration with BPEL compliant workflow engines, including IBM’s WebSphere
Process Server.
WebSphere Portal 6.1 includes an updated Task List portlet, and also a new portlet (Manage
Processes). The enhanced Task List portlet, displayed on the My Tasks page, displays all of the
tasks assigned to the current user. Users can filter the list to show all tasks, claimed tasks, and tasks
not claimed. By default, the list identifies each task by name, description, due date, creation date,
assigner, priority, and status. The Details icon displays additional information about the task. When a
user claims a task and clicks the name link of a task, the task page instance for the task opens. The
new Manage Processes portlet allows users to monitor individual processes and start new process
instances. Depending on the user’s privileges, individual process instances can be stopped, deleted,
or analyzed down to the details of individual tasks performed.

MarketWatch portlets (previously included with all WebSphere Portal 6 offerings)
Earlier versions of WebSphere Portal and WebSphere Portal Express releases included
demonstration portlets from IBM Business Partner Marketwatch. These trial use portlets enabled
customers to optionally configure access to News, Stock, Weather and other general business
information through portlets, and renew their subscription to these services directly with
Marketwatch after the trial period. These portlets have been useful to customers but have not

been prominently exposed in the user interface of recent WebSphere Portal releases. Customers
interested in incorporating Marketwatch news and information services, or information services
from other IBM Business partners providing news services, such as Yellowbrix, listed on the
WebSphere Portal Business Solutions Catalog: http://www01.ibm.com/software/brandcatalog/portal/.

Common PIM portlet support for Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange Mail or Calendar
(IMAP support is retained in WebSphere Portal 6.1 releases).
Domino Web Access portlet and the IBM Portlet for MS Exchange are the recommended IBM
provided portlets for access to Domino and MS Exchange applications. IBM also provides a portlet for
access to MS Outlook Web Access on the IBM WebSphere Portal Business Solutions catalog.

Portal Document Manager
In WebSphere Portal Version 6.1 Express, Enable, Extend and Enable for z/OS releases the Portal
Document Manager component is no longer provided. IBM is providing replacement technology via
entitlements to Lotus Quickr, IBM’s strategic document management and team collaboration offering.
Please see offering detail sections earlier in this document for additional detail regarding WebSphere
Portal 6.1 offering entitlements to Lotus Quickr.
Customers requiring migration support from use of Portal Document Manager content in WebSphere
Portal 5.1 or 6 releases to use Lotus Quickr J2EE 8.0.1 or Lotus Web Content Management 6.1 will be
provided a migration tool to support these use cases in early 2009. IBM teams whose customers require
this support may contact Krishnan Hariharan krishh@us.ibm.com, IBM Offering manager for Lotus Web
Content Management, or Lauren Wendel, wendel@us.ibm.com, IBM product manager for WebSphere
Portal.
Q. Were performance gains realized in WebSphere Portal and Lotus Web Content Management
Version 6.1 as compared to the previous 6.0.x versions?
A. Yes. In a range of scenarios tested across several typical OS platform and hardware
configurations, several key improvements were noted:
1. Lotus Web Content Management rendering performance improvement of 64% over Portal 6.0.1.3.
2. WebSphere Portal performance improved 16% when tested with sites consisting of thousands of
pages
3. WebSphere Portal performance improved 14% using the new Web 2.0 theme
4. Understanding of 32-bit vs. 64-bit Performance. ( 64-bit improves performance on portlets with high
memory demands, reduces performance on portlets with lower memory demands )
5. Ability to exploit latest server architecture. Testing revealed that Portal page aggregation and overall
performance can improve exponentially using the latest hardware, whether it's an Intel server, pSeries
server, etc.
6. WebSphere Portal Enable for z/OS Version 6.1 reveals a 180% performance improvement versus the
6.013 Version.

Q. Are site analytics capabilities included in WebSphere Portal for Version 6.1 releases?
A. Yes. WebSphere Portal, Version 6.1 creates standards based access logfiles in NCSA combined log
format that capture activity of WebSphere Portal installation and run-time operations. These standard
log files can be used with website usage reporting tools of customers’ choice to generate custom reports
analyzing the activity of WebSphere Portal installation and use operations. Technical documentation
outlining use case scenarios and example reports prepared with information recorded to the WebSphere
Portal log records will be provided as additional guidance for customers and partners.
Please reference additional materials available on the IBM developerWorks WebSphere Portal Zone:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/websphere/techjournal/0609_liesche/0609_liesche.html
Q. Are there Web Site Analytics technologies available from IBM Business Partners supporting
analysis of WebSphere Portal activity and application usage patterns?
A: Yes. IBM Business Partners have developed add-on solutions to extend WebSphere Portal
application activity and application use pattern analysis and reporting. IBM Business Partners providing
extended web analytics solutions for WebSphere Portal include Coremetrics Surfaid, Computer
Associates/Wily Technology, Inc. and others. Additional information on these and other IBM Partner
solutions for WebSphere Portal solutions can be obtained from the IBM WebSphere Portal Business
Solutions Catalog at:
http://catalog.lotus.com/wps/portal/portalworkplace
Other approaches may be used to leverage the capability of analytics engines with WebSphere Portal
applications. An example is integration with Google Analytics. Google Analytics is free of charge via a
Google Account ID. (If required, tailored services packages for Analytics can be purchased from one of
Google's partners.) To integrate Google Analytics with WebSphere Portal the following is required:
Create a Management Portlet that allows the assignment of Google Analytics accounts to different Virtual
Portals (or a single Google Analytics account to the entire Portal etc)
When rendering pages in Portal, insert the Google Analytics JavaScript code along with the correct
Analytics account Id into the page. From within the Management Portlet the Administrator can open the
Google Analytics website to view reports etc.
IBM also sells IBM Tivoli Composite Tivoli® Composite Application Manager for WebSphere®.
Tivoli Composite Application Manager for WebSphere is an application management tool that helps
maintain the availability and performance of business-critical applications. It helps you quickly pinpoint, in
real time, the source of bottlenecks in application code, server resources, or external system
dependencies. Additional information is available at:

WebSphere Portal Offerings and included component license questions:
IBM WebSphere Process Server
Q. WebSphere Process Server is packaged with WebSphere Portal Enable, Version 6.1 and
WebSphere Portal Extend 6.1. What restrictions are applied to the use of this code with
WebSphere Portal?
A. A copy of WebSphere Process Server software is included with the WebSphere Portal Enable Version
6.1 and WebSphere Portal Extend, Version 6.1. WebSphere Portal Enable and Extend customers are
entitled to use only the following WebSphere Process Server software components:




Business Process Choreographer
Common Event Infrastructure
Cloudscape database
WebSphere Process Server client
This entitlement does not authorize customers to use other WebSphere Process Server software
components with WebSphere Portal Version 6.1 releases with out purchasing a separate WebSphere
Process Server license.
The restricted use of WebSphere Process Server components as entitled in WebSphere Portal 6.1
Enable and Extend releases, entitle the customer to the following use cases. Customers may not use the
WebSphere Process Server components included and entitled with WebSphere Portal 6.1 Enable and
Extend for other purposes.
For each purchase of WebSphere Portal 6.1 Enable or Extend, one (1) copy of the component Business
Process Choreographer may be installed on a separate machine for use with the WebSphere Portal 6.1
applications. Such applications are limited to running business processes that consist solely of business
activities performed by Portal users or Portal provided services. For example, users cannot use Business
Process Choreographer to run business processes that contain activities that call to a non-Portal back
end server.
Customers requiring greater functionality to support workflow applications with WebSphere
Portal may purchase full WebSphere Process Server licenses.
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/integration/wps/
Q. How is IBM Lotus Web Content Management entitled with IBM WebSphere Portal 6.1 Enable
and Extend releases?:
A. Customers receive 100 limited entitlement Lotus Web Content Management value units for
every 600 WebSphere Portal Enable or Extend value units purchased (not available for Portal
Express). For example, customers receive the Lotus Web Content Management entitlements as follows:

IBM WebSphere Portal Version 6.1 FAQ
For IBM Internal Use Only
Lotus Web Content Management can be installed on a different machine than the Portal Server but can
only be used to create, manage, and deploy content to the Portal. The entitled use of WCM acquired with
Portal Enable and Extend purchases prohibits the use of pre-rendering to HTML for use outside of the
Portal.
EXAMPLES:
•
A customer who buys 800 VUs of Portal is entitled to 200 VUs of WCM, deployed however they choose: on a
dual-core 100-VU machine, or on a single-core, 200-VU machine, etc.
•
A customer who buys 1500VUs of Portal is entitled to 300 VUs of WCM, deployed however they choose.
WebSphere Portal Express 6.1 is licensed on a single server basis. WebSphere Portal Express
users are entitled to install Lotus Web Content management on the Portal Express Server, and the Portal
Express server must be used as the only production server that displays the content.
WebSphere Portal Enable for z/OS Version 6.1 users may use IBM Lotus Web Content Management to
to manage the creation and publication of content within the Portal Enable for z/OS 6.1 environment. With
this entitlement, users may may not use the component to manage the creation and publication of content
to an external, non-Portal supported website. If such functionality is desired, customers may purchasing
a separate IBM Lotus Web Content Management Proof of Entitlement(s) (POE) which are available only
for non-z/OS platforms.
Q. What is the purpose of providing WebSphere Portal 6.1 Enable, Extend, Enable for z/OS and
Express customers with restricted IBM Lotus Web Content Management license entitlements?
IBM is including Lotus Web Content Management software in WebSphere Portal to meet the “basic
scalability” web content management capabilities required for a production portal system. For some portal
deployments, this basic scalability will be all that is needed- an internal portal where most of the content is
provided by portlets linking to enterprise applications could be an example of this. Many other Portal
deployments (e.g. content-oriented intranets and websites) will require additional Workplace Web Content
Management licenses.
Q. What if my customer wants to publish to non-portal sites or requires additional CPU’s for their
Portal deployment?
A. They must purchase full Lotus Web Content Management licenses at the full price of $424 USD per
processor value unit. http://w3103.ibm.com/software/xl/portal/viewcontent?type=doc&srcID=KE01&docID=D055946R13099F08
With the purchase of an entitlement to full WCM, usage rights extend beyond using WCM only in the IBM
Portal environment framework to also using it to create stand alone web sites
•
In effect, once a customer purchases an entitlement to the full version, the previous 1:6 WCM
entitlements revert to full WCM licenses
Q. Is there a release that supports Lotus Web Content Management SMB customers?
IBM WebSphere Portal Version 6.1 FAQ
For IBM Internal Use Only
A. Yes, we will continue to support the SMB customers with the SMB-oriented Standard Edition offering,
Lotus Web Content Manager Standard Edition (WCMSE), which is available on the WebSphere Portal 6.1
platform.
Additional details:
WCMSE is intended to be a companion offering to WebSphere Portal Express, targeted at the SMB
market. The goal is to create an offering that allows IBM to sell the value of IBM web content
management to the SMB market. The intent of WCMSE is to provide an enterprise with a single-server
WCM solution where all WCM happens on that one machine. This is managed via some limits to the
terms and conditions of the offering. WCMSE is exactly the same code as WCM, but with the restrictions
in the license, outlined as follows:
"WCMSE may not be used in conjunction with any other copies of WCM received through entitlements in
IBM Programs such as WebSphere Portal Enable or WebSphere Portal Extend. However, You may use
WCMSE in conjunction with IBM WebSphere Portal Express provided You follow the license restrictions
for this offering. "
This means that WCMSE cannot be used with WCM purchased in other packages. Portal Enable and
Extend are listed as examples ("such as...)", but that is not the comprehensive list. Another would be
use of WCMSE with WCM regardless of how the entitlements to WCM were acquired. This rules out
using WCMSE as an authoring server whose content is syndicated to a production WCM server (with a
full WCM license).
You may not use more than one hardware server to serve WCMSE content. "WCMSE content" shall
mean content that is created, maintained or delivered using WCMSE.
This means that you cannot use multiple WCMSE servers together. This rules out having a WCMSE
authoring server and another WCMSE production server with content syndicated between them.
It is allowed to use virtual machine technology to enable two or more copies/instances of WCMSE to be
installed on the same machine. This would enable you to have an authoring environment and a
production environment. There is a limit of 400 PVUs total to be employed for WCMSE.
IBM Lotus Forms:
Q. How is Lotus Forms packaged with WebSphere Portal Version 6.1 Extend?
A. A restricted license of Lotus Forms Server v3.0.1, Lotus Forms Designer V3.0.1 and Lotus Forms
Viewer v3.0.1 software is included in entitlements of WebSphere Portal Extend, Version 6.1 software.
For every 1 to 10 licenses of WebSphere Portal Extend that a customer owns, they will be able to
install/deploy:



1 copy of Lotus Forms Server
2 user licenses of Lotus Forms Designer
4 user licenses of Lotus Forms Viewer
While there are no functional restrictions on these products, they must be used as part of a WebSphere
Portal deployment. If customers need additional licenses of Lotus Forms products, they may be
purchased separately.
IBM DB2 (included Restricted use component) with WebSphere Portal releases:
IBM WebSphere Portal Version 6.1 FAQ
For IBM Internal Use Only
Q. How may customers use the restricted use version of DB2 Enterprise with WebSphere Portal
releases? (Server, Express, Enable and Extend).
A. WebSphere Portal customers may use the included copy of IBM DB2 Enterprise Edition solely
for use to support portal configuration data required for execution of the program. The license
text is included below, and also may be found by searching for WebSphere Portal, then 6.1
versions on the IBM Software License Agreement site.
For IBM DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition (see Other IBM Programs)
DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition includes portions of DB2 Enterprise Server Edition. You are authorized
to install and use one copy of DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition only in association with Your licensed
use of the Program for the storage and management of data used and generated by the Program, and
not for other data management purposes. DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition is to be used only by the
internal components of the Program. For example, DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition can be used as a
repository for configuration information generated by the Program and cannot be used to build or extend
custom applications that store business data; this license does not permit inbound connections to the
database from other applications for queries or report generation. You are authorized to install and use
DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition on a single processor which may be other than the Licensed
Processor, but in any case only in connection with Your licensed use of the Program. You are not
authorized to install any separately purchasable features that are available for DB2 unless You purchase
a fully licensed version of DB2.
If You use the DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition with a separately licensed DB2 Version 9 data server,
the license terms of that data server take precedence over these terms.
Q. My customer wishes to implement DB2 High Availability Disaster Recovery (HADR) to support
their portal deployment. Assuming they purchase more than one WebSphere Portal offering
license, which would provide more than one DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition entitlement, may
they deploy one DB2 entitlement in support of Portal configuration data, and the other to support
HADR failover support of that Portal configuration data?
A. IBM DB2 Enterprise Edition includes features to support HADR failover capability, which is
implemented through the high availability disaster recovery (HADR) database replication feature. HADR is a
high availability solution that protects against data loss by replicating changes from a source database, called
the primary database, to a target database, called the standby database. The HADR feature comes with DB2
Enterprise Server Edition, so in turn, the 'Restricted Enterprise Server Edition' also contains the feature.
A table listing features included with IBM DB2 offerings can be located here:

IBM WebSphere Application Server:
Q: How is WebSphere Application Server included and licensed for use with WebSphere Portal
releases?
A. For all WebSphere Portal releases except WebSphere Portal Enable for z/OS Version 6.1, WebSphere
Application Server is included with WebSphere Portal, restricted for use with the Portal. The key summary
points from the license are included below
Page 23 of 26

the Program. You are authorized to install and use these components on a single processor which may be
other than the Licensed Processor, but in any case only in connection with Your licensed use of the Program.
Please check the license text on the IBM SLA site for more detail covering the list of restricted and unrestricted
use WAS components that may be used in support of WebSphere Portal deployments.
General Product Questions:
Q. How can WebSphere Portal Version 6.1 customers leverage our mobile offerings? What is the
roadmap for this support?
A. For companies such as service providers and enterprise customers with requirements to provide offline
access across a broad range of mobile devices, IBM offers WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable,
which integrates portal capabilities with device optimized rendering. Content can be developed
independent of the specific device and then is dynamically adapted for the capabilities of each specific
device. Therefore, content developers can create content or services once, and the content or services
can be presented on a wide range of devices without any additional rework. This is accomplished by
using a thorough device repository in combination with a high performance rendering technology that
translates the device independent content to the presentation capabilities of the specific device.
Developing device independent content and services are more cost effective because they can be written
once and rendered across devices. The device repository supports over 5,600 mobile devices and
updates are provided via included subscription update service.
WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable (WEMP) 6.0.1 is available. This release will be updated in
1H 2009 to support the WebSphere Portal 6.1 platform. Contact Lauren Wendel, product manager

IBM WebSphere Portal Version 6.1 FAQ
For IBM Internal Use Only
Other technologies, such as WebSphere Portlet Factory, can be used as an approach to provide
basic enablement of Portal applications to mobile devices (with commonly used applications and mobile
devices): An example may be found on IBM developerWorks:
http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/pfwiki.nsf/dx/websphere-dashboard-framework-developing-dashboards-forblackberries
Lotus Connections client for Blackberry (developed by RIM)
http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/server/domino/connections.jsp
WebSphere Portal Version 6 and higher releases also provide support for offline portal
synchronization capability integration with Lotus Expeditor. Lotus Expeditor is the base client
platform for the composite desktop and end user experience across IBM. It builds on the open standards
defined by OSGi and Eclipse to include support for J2EE developers as well as integration services for
.NET, and VB developers. Lotus Expeditor provides the Expeditor runtime environment for desktops,
laptops, tables, PDA’s and smart phones. Portal administration can be used to manage the deployment
of portlet applications to the client. These applications can be native client applications written to the
Eclipse plug-in model or can be portlet applications written for the portal server, but also able to be run in
the client. The Expeditor client includes a portlet container for running portlets in the client. When
portlets are written to this model and use the IBM provided repository and synchronization services, users
are able to take their applications with them when they disconnect from the corporate network. Lotus
Expeditor platform also provides support for display of composite applications, such as dashboard
applications. Developers can build an Expeditor WAB (Web Application Bundle) from a Lotus
ActiveInsight Dashboard Framework/WebSphere Portlet Factory JSR168 project and use its portlets/web
applications on Rich Client Platforms such as Expeditor 6.1.x and Notes 8 Client.
Lotus Expeditor 6.1.2, a component of the Portal’s Enterprise Suite Accelerator, provides additional out of
box offline portlet synchronization examples, and property broker support to load local portal resources,
and performance enhancements.

Q. What development Frameworks are supported by WebSphere Portal ?
A. From a development perspective, WebSphere Portal will continue to support Struts and JSF. There are
too many extended frameworks available, in different versions, for IBM to test for compatibility (Cocoon,
IceFaces, Facelets, MyFaces Spring, Wicket etc). However, WebSphere Portal Version 6 and higher
releases supports all JSR 186-based frameworks that use that standard.
Applications using other frameworks should be evaluated and verified to determine that they are
compliant with the JSR 168 implementation, like testing them on the JSR 168 Reference Implementation
Pluto at Apache.
WebSphere Portal also enables you to implement the popular AJAX programming pattern. You can use
AJAX enabled builders in WebSphere Portlet Factory, libraries in Rational Application Developer or you
can implement AJAX yourself.

Q. How does Lotus Mashups relate to WebSphere Portal?
A. Lotus Mashups and WebSphere Portal are complementary products. Lotus Mashups is ideally
suited for situations in which innovation and implementation speed outweigh governance and application
“perfection.” Applications created in Lotus Mashups, or via IBM Mashup Center, are often tactical or
opportunistic (i.e., situational) and built without a formal development process.
WebSphere Portal, on the other hand, is best used to create strategic, transactional, mission-critical
applications. Applications are built using a more traditional development lifecycle (formal requirements
gathering, full test, etc.). And, finally, Portal applications require IT operational support and governance.
If a mashup created by Lotus Mashups is deemed worthy for broader adoption, or if it needs to have an
additional level of control applied, it can be seamlessly deployed to WebSphere Portal, where it can be
managed and governed by IT.
IBM WebSphere Portal Widget Portlet provides customizable, personalized, and managed access to
widgets that are compliant with the iWidget Specification, thus extending the existing capabilities of
WebSphere Portal to provide flexible integration with web components, independent of their technology.
Users can leverage widgets on their portal pages side by side with portlets, Gadgets or other web
components, enabling the creation of portal-based mashups tailored to the situational requirements of an
enterprise.

In the future, we also intend to support the Lotus Mashups browser-based tool running on top of
WebSphere Portal Server.
