You have arrived at the correct destination if you are a second year (yippee) nursing student and you are enrolled in the Psychiatric Nursing Class- 231. This area of nursing is new to most of you and may cause you some anxiety. You are experiencing the fear of the unknown, or maybe you realize you will be working with the most stigmatized patient population. Being “labeled” as a “psych Patient” is nothing any of us would care to be burdened with. Trust that this will be a most interesting learning opportunity, complete with a new awareness and appreciation gained. You will learn about caring for the patient who is experiencing the most extreme anxiety – mental illness and for the patient who is mild-moderately anxious. The latter is your “ordinary” clinical patient, your family members, friends who are under stress…like you. This course will introduce you to your role as a communicator, teacher, leader and professional through a variety of activities and assignments. Your learning will encompass service provided to the community which will enlighten you to the services available outside the bedside in acute care. You will be involved in group projects that will enhance your team building, communication and leadership skills. You will hone your research and writing skills through worksheets, process recordings and a case study. I also will allow your creativity to emerge, as the best nurses are most creative in their planning and intervening. There are a lot of assignments, projects and activities to keep you very busy. This will be a good opportunity to improve your prioritization and time management skills in a different way. Remember we couldn’t let a semester begin without a medication calculation test. This will be given within the first two weeks of the course. Okay, take a moment and tap into your own anxiety. Are you mild, moderate, severe or are you in panic?? I look forward to meeting you on August 18th, for our first theory class meeting. See you then!! Some special notes for you: Assignments/Projects 1. For every day a project is late, the student will be deducted 1 point and a notation will be made in the clinical evaluation tool. If no points are allotted for that particular assignment, a notation will be made in the clinical evaluation tool. 2. Failure to complete a written assignment or participate in a group project in N231 will result in an incomplete grade for N231. 3. All written work must be PROOF READ!! 1 point will be deducted for every 8 misspellings, grammar, punctuation errors or APA errors. It would be beneficial to review the student handbook example on APA format. Exams 4. Each student must pass the medication calculation test with 90% to achieve competency. Each student will have 3 attempts to pass the test within the first two weeks of the course. 5. If a student does not achieve competency on the medication calculation test on Test #3, the student will receive a clinical no pass and must immediately exit the nursing program. 6. If a student misses a test date (theory, or medication/calculation test), the student be subject to a 5% reduction of your overall test score. 7. All required learning materials; text readings, supplemental readings, video tapes, CD-ROMs and guest speakers are subject to testing and evaluation of the students learning. Clinical Performance 8. Clinical performance is rated on the basis of Pass and No-pass. Any student who receives a No-pass cannot progress to the next course. 9. If a student receives a no-pass in clinical, before the last day of the course, the student can not be present at the clinical site, theory classroom or nursing skills lab, there after. Theory 10.
