Discover the Law aims to offer workshops that will empower students to avoid legal problems and make informed decisions while gaining familiarity with a variety of interesting areas of law and related issues. Overview Discover the Law is a legal education program comprised of a series of workshops on law-related topics. The workshops are offered to all currently-registered UC San Diego students regardless of academic or professional interests, including graduate and professional students. Students who complete four workshops will receive a certificate of achievement and an invitation to the recognition reception during which certificates will be awarded. Students who complete eight or more workshops will receive a certificate of special recognition. Discover the Law is not offered for academic credit. Students need not be considering a career in law to participate. The value of participating in the Discover the Law There are many benefits to taking part in the Discover the Law program. You may wish to participate: To earn a certificate that demonstrates a commitment to learning more about law and law-related issues. To gain practical knowledge that will help you avoid legal problems. To acquire skills and information that will help you make informed decisions. To build your resume. Cram Saturday Student Legal Services is committed to providing all interested students with the opportunity to complete the Discover the Law Program. Once again, we are featuring a “Cram Saturday” event. Four workshops, one from each subject category, will be offered between 10:00 am – 3:00 pm on Saturday, February 5, 2011. This event is ideal for students who have busy schedules on weekdays or who want to complete the requirements for a certificate of achievement in one day. Students may attend one, some, or all of the Cram Saturday workshops. Students who wish to participate in Cram Saturday must sign up for the workshops by Friday, February 4, 2011, using the form included in the Discover the Law program sign-up packet. Requirements for earning a Certificate of Achievement 1. You must sign up for the Discover the Law Program through Student Legal Services. You may sign up for the program at any point during Winter Quarter until Friday, February 4, 2011. The earlier you sign up for the program, the more opportunities you will have to complete the program requirements. You can obtain a sign-up packet from Student Legal Services, located in the Student Services Center, Fifth Floor, Room 527. You must complete and return a sign-up sheet and pre-program questionnaire to Student Legal Services in order to receive a certificate. 2. You must attend four one-hour legal education workshops. Each workshop must be from a different subject category of four total categories: “Savvy and Safe,” “Rights and Responsibilities,” “What’s That?” and “Jumpstart Your Career.” You will receive a program guide with the dates of the workshops offered in each category. Program guides will be available in Student Legal Services beginning on Wednesday, December 8, 2010. You will need to sign in at each workshop you attend and you must have the presenter initial your program guides at the end of each workshop in order to verify attendance. 3. You must submit your initialed program guide and a completed post-program questionnaire to Student Legal Services no later than noon on Friday, March 4, 2011. Student Legal Services staff will verify your successful completion of the program requirements. If you have completed all of the Program requirements, you will be invited to a recognition reception in the Spring Quarter. Certificates will be awarded during the reception. Requirements for a Certificate of Special Recognition 1. You must complete all of the requirements for the Discover the Law Certificate of Achievement. 2. You must also complete four additional workshops from any category. To receive a certificate of special recognition, you must complete four workshops (one from each program category) and four additional workshops from any category. The additional workshops may all be from the same category or a combination of categories. SAVVY & SAFE Party Time, Not Jail Time. An attorney will explain how to address alcohol and drug-related citations and will provide guidance on how to avoid receiving these types of citations. Hazing: Fact or Fiction. An attorney will help sort out the rumors from the truth about what the law says regarding hazing. If you are involved in a student organization, you won’t want to miss this workshop. Arrested. Now what? An attorney will discuss what a person’s rights are when contacted by law enforcement and how, if arrested, to best preserve one’s legal options. Hooking Up. Be part of a thought-provoking discussion about what “hooking up” means and what the law says about consent. Co-presented with the Sexual Assault and Violence Prevention Resource Center. Traffic Troubles. This workshop probably won’t get you out of a ticket, but an attorney will give you information on how to deal with one. Criminal Court: Behind the Scenes. An attorney from the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office will provide an inside look into criminal law and share what really happens in the process of resolving a criminal case. RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES Living Off Campus. An attorney will help you maximize your chances of having a positive experience as renter by sharing information about your rights and responsibilities. Get the scoop on deposits, repairs, habitability, homeowner associations and more! Traveling Overseas. An attorney will highlight information students should obtain before embarking on an overseas adventure. Topics will include learning how laws differ in other countries, medical insurance, and information for renters. Landlord-Tenant Jeopardy. Test your knowledge of renters’ rights and responsibilities in this lively, interactive session. (It is suggested that you attend Living Off Campus first, but it is not required.) Small Claims. A representative from the San Diego County Small Claims Court Legal Advisory office will provide an overview of small claims court, dispel myths, and discuss under what circumstances you might consider filing a claim. CARE about Your Credit! Get answers from a Bankruptcy Court judge! Judge John Hargrove (Ret.) will offer ideas and tips about how to manage credit wisely and how to develop sound habits for managing your finances. Identity Theft. An attorney will discuss identity theft, provide tips on how to prevent it and how to maintain your personal and financial security. WHAT’S THAT? Family Law. An attorney will discuss common family law issues such as child custody, community property, divorce and prenuptial agreements. Patent Law. A patent attorney and UC San Diego alumnus will provide an introduction to patent law and share how his background in science prepared him for a career in law. Legalese Made Easy. Learning legal terms can be all fun and games in this playful workshop. Add a little legal jargon to your vocabulary and have a good time doing it. Environmental Law. An environmental law attorney will give an overview of the types of issues that attorneys in this area address and discuss the benefits and challenges of engaging in these types of cases. Tort Law. Not the delicious dessert, but the area of law that covers class action lawsuits, car accidents, medical malpractice, slip and fall accidents, product recalls, infliction of emotional distress claims, and other prevalent tort claims. Evidence. Ever wondered what attorneys are objecting about? Find out! An attorney will explain why some evidence is admissible in court, why some is not, and why there is often disagreement in a case about what’s in and what’s out. Dependency. An attorney will discuss all aspects of dependency law, including its impact on the courts, on parents’ and children’s rights, and on society as a whole. JUMPSTART YOUR CAREER Can They Ask That? An attorney will discuss what issues employers can raise in a job interview and what questions are off limits. This workshop is a must for job seekers! The Law School Experience- Years 1, 2, and 3. A local law school Dean will discuss all aspects of the law school experience including highlights from all three years, internships, externships, clerkships, working in legal clinics, oncampus interviews, finding your summer job, on-campus interviews, and more! A Day in the Life of a Civil Litigator. Join us for a panel discussion with civil litigation attorneys. These attorneys will give valuable insight to the question, “What does a law firm associate do all day anyway?” Topics such as civil litigation practice, working at a law firm, the billable hour, and conducting trials will be discussed. Law School: Preparation & Application Process. Find out from UCSD’s pre-law advisors how to prepare for and apply to law schools and how the admission process works. Learn about building experience, taking the LSAT and the resources to help you pick schools and write your application essay. Legal Research. A research librarian will introduce participants to legal research tools available at UC San Diego and discuss why good research skills are critical. Weighing the Options: Career Paths for Lawyers. Cognitive Science Building (CSB) The CSB is located near Peterson Hall. Going towards Thurgood Marshall College from Muir College, turn right past Peterson Hall and follow the path toward the Cognitive Science Building.
