INTRODUCTION On 19 December 2010 the workshop on "Living Green- Easy or Not?” took place successfully at the Great Hall of University of Natural Sciences in Hanoi. This was an event within the project "Capacity Building towards sustainable lifestyles" coordinated by UNEP with the generous support of SGS-Switzerland and SGS-Vietnam. Under the theme "Living GreenEasy or Not?", the workshop aimed to create an opportunity for individuals and representatives from organizations with a shared interest in sustainable lifestyles to: UNDERSTAND: • Benefits of green lifestyles - Sustainable lifestyles • Living green from individual perspective and group/ organization perspectives TAKE ACTION TO: • Develop green lifestyles - sustainable lifestyles today • Share experiences in the implementation of green-living projects: methods, difficulties and advantages • Promote acts of green and sustainable living among friends, family, colleagues and the community The workshop achieved the following results: • Participants had enhanced knowledge about the benefits of green lifestyles and sustainable lifestyles • Implementers of green-living projects shared and exchanged their views on sustainable lifestyles • 14 groups/ organizations/ clubs exhibited their projects and project results in the exhibition "The idea of living green” • Ideas and experience to turn theory into practical action to build sustainable lifestyles were shared. The Workshop "Living Green- Easy or Not?" was co-organised by the Center for Development of Community Initiative and Environment (C&E) along with Live&Learn for Environment and Community (Live & Learn). There was active contribution from Vietnam Green Generation Network and YouthXchange Vietnam (YXCvn). Workshop participants included Mr. Do Chi Thanh, SGS-Vietnam Chief Representative in the North, Ms. Do Van Nguyet, Director of Live & Learn, Ms. Hoang Thanh Tam, Director of C&E, Ms. Do Thi Huyen from UNDP, representative of Vietnam Environmental Network (VEN) and over 120 young people from clubs and organizations in Hanoi. 2. MAIN CONTENTS 2.1 Introduction of the project "Capacity Building towards Sustainable Lifestyles" The workshop started with an introduction of the project "Capacity Building towards Sustainable Lifestyles" by Ms. Dang Thi Anh Nguyet, Research and Training Coordinator of C&E. The presentation highlighted the project's purpose which was to promote sustainable lifestyles in Vietnam. In the project implementation, the project team has adapted its activities 3 to build capacity for YXCvn network and raise the community’s awareness of this subject. The project also supported a number of green-living initiatives, including as Vegetarian for the Environment, Environmental Day - Hello Green, Green Days, Household-scale Sewage Treatment, Cycling for the environment and A Hanoi without plastic bags. Mr. Do Chi Thanh representing the project sponsor gave a speech to the workshop. He introduced the ideas, rationale and importance of living green, and offered many simple examples that young people could do for living green including changing their daily habits, keeping their home clean; or shopping "energy efficient"-labeled products. Ms. Nguyet – C&E Training and Research Coordinator 2.2 Sharing Green-Living Initiatives In this section, the workshop participants enjoyed a play by some young people from Vietnam Green Generation Network and YXCvn. The play portrayed a luxurious life of a city big boy: a big house, luxurious cars and lavish spending. The house was air-conditioned to well below acceptable levels of temperature. Food was eaten wastefully. The boy also kept many wildlife species for fun... The short play demonstrated unsustainable lifestyles of certain individuals in society. It warned people that they needed to switch from the current over-exploitation of the nature to satisfy their immediate indefinite needs to greener and more responsible living to the environment and to future generations. The workshop continued with the questions given by the MC: "So what is living green? How do you understand living green?" There “In my opinion, Living Green is to live without were active responses and sharing leaving bad impacts on the future generations”. from many young participants. While “Living Green, I think, is simply that to buy opinions and understanding varied, it was agreed that green lifestyles were sufficient food, to keep houses clean, … Besides, it geared toward balance and harmony in is to ensure fairness for all human beings and life and harmony with the nature. animals such as not to destroy forests and do harm to the habitats of animal and plant species …..” To clarify this subject, five young people having Green Living initiatives which received support from the project Sharing of some young workshop participants 4 "Capacity Building towards Sustainable Lifestyles" reported on their project implementation to the workshop. • • Ms. Thuy Dung from Saigon 350 Club started with the initiative "Environment Day - Hello Green." Hello Green was held on 8 August 2010 in Ho Chi Minh City with green lessons for high school students on Biodiversity, Sustainable Lifestyles and project implementation skills. The festival attracted the attention of over 1000 young people in Ho Chi Minh and a number of famous singers and guests attended. After the event, there were six suggestions for similar future activities in schools and regions. Five television stations and other media units provided coverage of the event. Ms. La Thuy Diem Hang from Club C4E of Ho Chi Minh City followed with "Cycling for the Environment”. She and other club members called on people to use bicycles as their means of transport. Cycling helped reduce greenhouse gas and was environmentfriendly. In this activity, the youth biked to wildlife at risk (WAR) station in Cu Chi, Can Gio mangrove forest, Phu An Bamboo Village in Binh Duong and Nam Cat Tien National Park. Through the bicycle tour, participants learned a lot about biodiversity and environmental protection. More similar tours have been organised in a broader scale and have connected many more young people. Ms. Thuy Dung – Saigon 350 Ms. Diem Hang - C4E Ho Chi Minh After the presentation of projects implemented in Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. Nguyen Thu Trang, Deputy Director of GREACT Club in Hue reported on the campaign "Vegetarian for the environment." This relatively new idea attracted the attention of many participants in the workshop. Based on the fact that livestock has emitted the largest amounts of greenhouse gases among today industries, Trang took an initiative to carry out a public campaign on vegetarianism and reduction of meat consumption for environmental protection. The campaign was first launched as part of Green Days in Dong Da, Ha Noi on 19 September. In addition, on the occasion of Global Work Party on 10 October 2010, vegetarian campaign for the environment was implemented simultaneously in the North and Centre with a focus in Hue where 420 young people gathered together and arranged vegetables in "350" formation. This action attracted the attention of many city residents and thereby 5 transmitted the campaign message to the community. Trang also mentioned difficulties arising in the campaign and proposed measures such as publishing materials on vegetarian nutrition, organising vegetarian cooking classes and encouraging people to eat only vegetables on a fixed date in the month. The campaign also called for the youth to further spread vegetarian. Next, Mr. Le Van Son representing Stupid Team- Union of environmental leaders from Da Nang presented the project "Household-scale sewage treatment." This technical project was currently implemented in a number of households in Da Nang City. It aimed to treat household sewage to meet QCVN 2008/BTNMT B-Typed Sewage Specifications to reduce environmental pollution. The first phase of this project was in implementation with positive results. It promised future success for the second phase as the project would take a broader scale. Ms.Thu Trang - GREACT Mr. Le Van Son - Stupid Team Ms. Hong Nhung - C4E Ha Noi Finally was an initiative from Hanoi youth. Ms. Nguyen Hong Nhung from Club C4E presented "A Hanoi without Plastic Bags." The initiative was to use old newspapers to 6 make paper bags at home in a simple way. The project was communicated via various media channels such as television, Internet, and cycling campaigns for the environment of the club C4E. Nhung shared her lively memories of the project implementation from the newspaper collection, bag making and delivery. There were 3000 paper bags made and five stores agreed to participate in the project. Besides these achievements, there were difficulties such as time management for bag making, the bag design and quality and the poor weather. Nhung said that in the future, the project would sell bags to raise funds and expand volunteer forces for bag making to include people with disabilities and children. After reports from the five projects, workshop participants raised questions, including how to measure the changes created by the projects. There was a good news: Mr. Long from SGS committed to fund and search for vegetarian venues with good quality and reasonable prices for the project "Vegetarian for the environment" in Hai Phong. This was a great encouragement to all Living-Green Projects at the workshop. 2.3 Votes on exhibited "Living-Green Initiatives" In the second part of the morning session, participants joined the exhibition "Living-Green Initiatives." The exhibition was an opportunity for individuals, groups and clubs from across the country who were interested in sustainable lifestyles to display pictures, posters and other items related to their green-living initiatives. The organisers selected 14 best initiatives from 20 registered ones for display at the exhibition. Relevant groups held exciting presentations of their initiatives to the jury and the voters. The morning session ended with the voting for two awards: the best Green-Living Initiative and the best display booth. The voting attracted special attention from the participants who were thrilled to receive the results. 7 2.4 Release of the video clip "The Story of Cosmetics" The afternoon session of the workshop started with the video clip "The Story of cosmetics." This was translated and edited by members of Vietnam Green Generation Network and was first aired in Vietnam. The film showed flaws in the laws of many countries in the world. The United States of America, in particular, allowed this huge-profit industry to put in their products various harmful chemicals. Cosmetics were subject to the least control of all goods in the world. "The Story of Cosmetics” followed the same style of "The Story of Stuff" which was wellknown for the truth behind the production and consumption of products for daily life. "The Story of Cosmetics” provided better understanding of daily personal care products, from lipstick to shampoo for children. The film also inquires about the health implications of cosmetic products to consumers, producers and the environment, thereby showing how to build a non-toxic cosmetic industry. After the film, the young people shared their experience in using cosmetics, especially shampoo. Many admitted to using natural leaves to wash their hair in the past which they no longer use today. To further illustrate this point, six young people were invited to join a small game in which they listed some of their daily sustainable and unsustainable habits. 2.5 Discussion “Green Living-Easy or Not?” After the game, workshop participants divided into groups to discuss the question "Living Green - Easy or Not?". Each group was to provide their views in daily situations. They include Vegetarian or not? Consume wildlife products or not? Buy the products produced by child labor or not? The discussion was lively with individuals making bold ideas and opinions with supporting evidence and arguments. Some questions had agreed answers while others stayed unsolved for further reflection. This small discussion with simple situations offered opportunities for the youth to think together and listen to concretise their green-living opinions. 8 Discussion results: Buy wildlife products - They are good for health and can be gifts for relatives and friends - They show your class and worth - Be a vegetarian To enjoy new and unusual taste and attractive food To reduce greenhouse gas emissions To eliminate various diseases such as obesity Buy products made with child labour To create jobs for children and help street children To ensure proper prices of the products which will ensure proper salaries for children Not buy wildlife products - To comply with the law on wildlife protection - To ensure no wildlife exhausion and ecological imbalance - There are alternatives other than wildlife products Not be a vegetarian - Food is expensive and not many vegetarian restaurants - Vegetables have little nutrition and do not ensure good health Not buy products made with child labour - Not to support child labour exploitation - Not to be in contrary to traditional morality. 2.6 Awards The workshop "Living Green- Easy or Not?" was not only an opportunity for young people to better understand sustainable lifestyle but also a place to honor those people and initiatives contributing to the development of green-sustainable lifestyles. Some members of Vietnam Green Generation Network opened the ceremony by their music and song performance. This created an exciting and passionate atmosphere for the ceremony. Next, Mr. Do Chi Thanh - SGS Vietnam and Ms. Hoang Thanh Tam - Director of C&E awarded certificates to active participants in the program "Capacity Building towards Sustainable Lifestyles" in 2010. A ceremony followed to honor winners of the contest "Finding Green Symbols" of Vietnam Green Generation Network with support from Live&Learn and BOO fashion company. The contest took place excitingly and interestingly in two months and ended successfully with Le Thien Duc and Thinh Van Tan being the first prize winners and Tran Nhat Anh being the most promising winner. The most awaited part of the ceremony was the announcement and honoring of the individuals/ groups/ clubs having the best Green-living initiative and the best displaying booth. After two 9 hours of vote counting, the Secretariat gave the final result. The campaign "Vegetarian for the environment" won the highest score for the best Green-living initiative and the campaign "I Agree" won the highest score for the best display booth. “The best initiative” “The best display booth” 3. WORKSHOP SUMMARY The workshop "Living Green- Easy or Not?" was not a project event but also a point for further thoughts and ideas of green-sustainable lifestyles for the young participants. In attending the workshop, they not only learned more about green living but also discussed, shared and voted for the best green living initiatives. The workshop ended with applause to congratulate two award-winning initiatives.
