LEARNING OUTCOMES Program: Bachelor of Arts in Italian Studies Students will be able to converse with ease and confidence when dealing with most routine tasks and social situations that require an exchange of basic information related to work, school, recreation, particular interests and areas of competence. Students will be able to demonstrate analytical and critical skills when writing in Italian. Students will demonstrate professional readiness for language-related fields of study and work. During their last semester of foreign language study at University of Houston, students are encouraged to take an Oral Proficiency Exam based on the Guidelines issued by the American Council of the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The results of the test can be listed on the students’ resume to certify their level of oral proficiency in the language (Italian). Information about the test can be found at the Language Testing International website: www.languagetesting.com or by contacting the ACTFL Testing office: testing@languagetesting.com. REQUIREMENTS: ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED. Students will be dropped from the course for excessive absences. Three absences or two consecutive absences are considered excessive. If students have valid or University excused absences, they must consult with the instructor to avoid being dropped. Students are expected to be prepared at every class meeting. COURSE OBJECTIVES: The first year program is well-balanced for beginning students of Italian. The program is designed to develop and strengthen oral and written communication, and reading and listening skills within a culturally rich environment that introduces students to today’s Italians, their language, their concerns, and their varied lifestyles.
