The following Nov 24 1993 letter from Donald A Sherman a grandson from Bay City MI is quoted below:

My family was not "Sherman's" until the turn of the century when my grandfather immigrated from

Riga, Latvia.

Our name was Todrosovitch, and during the Communist programs of the time when it was very fashionable to persecute and kill Jews, my grandfather had no choice but to scoop up his family, wife and children, and flee to safe haven.

It is unclear how our name got changed to Sherman. The best story is that one of the immigration officers asked my grandfather what he did for a living (he spoke no English) and his best response

Walter W Sherman . Bay City MI Mar 6 1895. The notorious Social saloon, corner of Walter and Seventh Streets, is a thing of the past. Fire wiped it off the face of the earth at 3:25 o'clock this morning. Good riddance to bad rubbish. The Social, like the notorious Red Light of fourth

Avenue, has had a long and checkered career. Both places were in the same class. The Social was a frame building about 40 x 60 feet, one story high, and was originally intended for a store. John Redmond used to keep a shoe store in it 20 years ago. As business in that quarter of the city died away, the shoe store closed and a saloon took its place. It then became a dive. The corner was owned by Walter W Sherman, who says he paid

$6,500 for it.
