Free form Crochet - Margaret Perkins

Freeform Crochet is about thinking outside the (granny) square. If you can do the basics of crochet i.e. chain, slipstitch, DC, Half Treble and Treble, you can create beautiful textured fabric which can then be used to make bags, clothing, jewellery or whatever you please.

The idea is not to follow a pattern, but to look at the possibilities of yarn, stitch colour and texture and to use these to make your fabric.

Freeform Crochet is what it says – free. If you want to use a thick chunky yarn with a thin stringy one, then do so. If you want to see what torn strips of fabric would look like if crocheted – try it. If you think a piece of plain crochet looks too uninteresting – pick up some stitches across the surface and add a bit of crochet in a third dimension. There are no such things as ‘mistakes’ in freeform crochet – just new design elements. The main thing is to let your imagination run wild, to explore the possibilities of yarn, colour and texture and - above all – to have fun!

For each of the workshops I will have available kits for purchase at

$5 each. Participants should bring their own knitting needles or crochet hooks but if they don’t have them I will have some available for purchase and/or loan. A notebook and pencil might also be useful although not necessary.

Friday 3.30-5.30. Sunday 12.30-2.30

Free form Knitting - Margaret Perkins

What is “Freeform Knitting” you might ask. Well that is a very difficult question to answer because it depends on your own individual preferences. But to give you an idea – it is about letting go of preconceived notions of what knitting is all about. There are no patterns as such in freeform knitting – it is more about creating a fabric which can then be used in any way you want. It is about

‘giving yourself permission’ to play with yarns. If you want to use a thick chunky textured yarn with a thin stringy one then do so. If you want to see what torn strips of fabric look like when knitted – try it.

If you think a piece of knitted fabric looks too plain – pick up some stitches across the surface and add a bit of knitting (or crochet) in a third dimension – above all – to have fun!
