The University of the Philippines Madrigal Singers was organized in
1963 by National Artist Professor Andrea O. Veneracion. The group is
composed of students, faculty and alumni from the different colleges of the
University of the Philippines (UP). The choir is one of the world’s most
awarded, having consistently won all the top prizes in most of the world’s
prestigious choral competitions: Arezzo and Gorizia in Italy, Marktoberdorf
in Germany, Spittal in Austria, Neuchatel in Switzerland, Tours in France,
Varna in Bulgaria, Debrecen in Hungary, Cantonigros, Tolosa and Torrevieja
in Spain. They hold the distinction of being the first choir in the world to win
the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing twice (1997 and 2007).

The group was recognized in 2009 by the UNESCO as Artists for
Peace for “putting fame and influence at the service of UNESCO’s ideals and
efforts to promote cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and a culture of
peace”. Then in 2010, the Concorso Polifonico Guido d’ Arezzo Foundation
honored the group with the Guidoneum Award by for “their artistic and
choral promotion activity”. In July 2012, the group became the first choir in
the world to receive The Brand Laureate Premier Award from the Asia
Pacific Brands Foundation, in recognition for its “significant contribution to
the world of choral music, producing new compositions and choral settings
for Philippine, Asian and International songs, spreading the beauty of this
genre and giving a good musical experience to the audience.”
In 2013, the Philippine Madrigal Singers have been invited to perform
during the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National

In June 1997, the Philippine Madrigal Singers came
home from their ninth world concert tour, winning the
grand prize in the Grand Prix European de Chant Choral
Competition in Tours, France, besting five other grand
prize winners of the most prestigious choral competition
in Europe.
In July 2006, the Madz won the grand prize (Grand
Prix de la Ville de Tours) at the Florilege de Tours choral
competition in France.
On August 26, 2007, the Philippine Madrigal Singers
won, for the second time, the grand prize in the European
Grand Prix for Choral Singing in Arezzo, Italy. This
victory makes them the first of the only two choirs in the
world to win the grand prize twice. The European Grand
Prix is widely understood to be the Olympics of the choral
circuit.
On July 27, 2009, UNESCO honored the Madz and
designated the group as UNESCO Artist for Peace. This
title is given to celebrity advocates charged with the
mission of embodying and raising awareness in the
UNESCO ideals, which include peace, security,
fundamental human rights and freedom.
On September 19, 2010, the Philippine Madrigal
Singers was conferred the prestigious Guidoneum Award
2010 by the Fondazione Guido d’Arezzo in Italy.

drama
Founded in 1967 by Cecile-Guidote Alvarez, the Philippine
Educational Theater Association (PETA) is an organization of creative and
critical artist-teacher-cultural workers committed to artistic excellence and a
people’s culture that fosters both personal fulfillment and social
transformation. It roots its foundation in the use of theater that is distinctly
Filipino as a tool for social change and development. The company has lived
by this principle as it continues to evolve with the changes that have occurred
within and around it. It continues to push for first-rate quality theater while
never taking for granted that the art it produces and teaches always serves a
greater purpose. For 45 years, PETA has produced more than 300 original
Filipino plays that now serve as landmarks in terms of artistic and educational
reach. PETA has performed and taught theater in the Philippines and abroad.

drama
Tanghalang Pilipino is unique among other theater groups in the
Philippines as it maintains a core of actors whose full-time training in acting
is subsidized by the company. Known as the Tanghalang Pilipino Actors
Company, these actors are tapped for the company’s season repertoire and
special performances. The actors who have graduated from the Actors
Company now comprise the most sought-after stable of talents in television,
cinema and commercial advertising.
TP has successfully presented more than 200 full productions within 25
seasons while generating one of the best audience attendance records among
CCP’s resident companies. Its earliest repertoire was guided by the vision of
Nonon Padilla, its founding Artistic Director (1987-2002), and sustained by
Herbert Go (2002-2006), and Dennis Marasigan (2006-2008). Tanghalang
Pilipino is currently on its 26th Theater Season (2012-2013) under the artistic
direction of Fernando Josef.

Folk Dance Troupe 類 folk art
For the past 65 years, the Philippine Baranggay Folk Dance Troupe
(PBFDT) has traveled to the different stages of the world across Asia, Europe
and North America, providing a window to the complex and culturally rich
history of the Philippines. The troupe has received many citations and awards
both nationally and internationally. The most prestigious of these is the
Philippine Presidential Medal of Merit Award ‘Patnubay ng Kalinangan sa
Sayaw’ (1971)—a truly distinguished award of recognition for the important
contribution the troupe is making to its home country.
Through the pioneering leadership of the founding Artistic Director Dr.
Paz-Cielo A. Belmonte, awardee of the ‘Gawad CCP Para sa Sining at
Sayaw’ (1990), Philippine Centennial Awards (1999) and the ‘Gintong BAI
Awards’ (2005), the PBFDT continues to be one of the leading dance
companies in the Philippines. With the PBFDT playing an important role in
folk dance education, with most of its members being teachers-educators, the
group has created a tremendous impact to the development of the Filipino
youth’s values in appreciation of their own culture, arts and traditions,
particularly folk/traditional dance and music.
