This year, in honor of Black History Month, teachers in the West High Social Studies dept. were surveyed & ranked the top 18
most influential African-Americans in U.S. History. Today is Justice Thurgood Marshall. Justice Marshall was the grandson of a
slave. President Kennedy appointed Marshall to the U.S. Court of Appeals & President Johnson appointed him to the Supreme
Court in 1967. He compiled a liberal record that included strong support for Constitutional protections of individual rights,
especially the rights of criminal suspects against the government. Justice Marshall died in 1993 & was buried in Arlington
National Cemetery. His landmark case was Brown v Board of Education, in which he represented the plaintiff, Linda Brown. He
also wrote for the majority in the landmark case of Roe v Wade. Marshall strongly admired, “….those who refused to acquiesce
in outdated notions of ‘liberty,’ justice,’ and ‘equality,’ and who worked to better them. The true miracle of the Constitution was
not the birth of the Constitution, but its life.”
