Each one of us has memories of our principals. If we went to good schools, likely those memories would be pleasant ones. But all in all, this top position requires them to be outstanding, mostly as mentors and leaders. And so are the principals who serve the children of our community. This month’s cover story’s idea was parked in my head for the last few years. Head of schools are usually strong characters who deal with a lot of issues from every direction—parents, teachers and of course, students. But are they as strong as we expect them to be? And how do they feel about raising your kids? I always wanted to find out the differences and similarities these school leaders might portray. Since I send my kids to schools in Dongguan, I find it very interesting to compare the personalities of the people who are in control, mainly because it might reflect on the schools they command. Meet these eight private schools principals inside (pgs. 18 – 26). *** This April 12 (Sunday), for the second year in a row, we’re providing free medical training to people from the Dongguan international community, in collaboration with Global Doctor, Dongguan Dragons Baseball and Pals Family Restaurant & Bar. I am Canadian and would like to purchase health insurance in China. Nicole HERE!: This is a serious question that will be tough to answer thoroughly in this forum. Step one to insuring a healthy, tranquil lifestyle while living abroad, especially considering that Chinese regulation makes business tough for foreign insurance companies, is to be knowledgeable. Know the health risks of the region, and prepare yourself for them with updates to lifestyle choices, diet and vaccinations. Most domestic insurance companies, such as Pingan and China Pacific Insurance, accept foreign clients. For international standard service try AIG and for a small business package, Allianz China Life Insurance might be worth a look. The massive restaurant, taking up three, three-storied houses, reportedly attracted nightly customers from Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Next to the entrance gate two wild goshawks were trapped with several chickens, ducks and geese in a single coop. Another cage held seven live snakes, including two cobras. Lining the hall and the kitchen, rows of jars were filled with rare geckos and protected birds. The owners and chef were arrested and face up to ten years in prison. At about 10 a.m. on February 28, a man surnamed Gao boarded at the East Railway Bus Station insisting to pay the normal price. The porter decided she didn’t need the gruff, ripped up the 15 yuan and told Gao he was not a man. Gao disagreed and decided to take a picture of his new nemesis, who walked over, lifted her shirt and said roughly, “Take a picture of this.” The bus company has defended their employee, saying that she had been going through personal issues, but pledged to fire her if they confirmed the story. It suggested that legislative power should be granted to Dongguan. As a prefecture-level city without counties, Dongguan has been asking for this power since 2009. Without it, the city ran into difficulties in managing the issues such as the motorcycle ban and the management of flowing population. After gaining the power, Dongguan will be able to make its own laws and regulations for environmental protection, urban and rural construction management, and history Who Let the Dogs Out? The noise and unsanitary conditions from dozens of Tibetan Mastiffs belonging to a Zhangmutou man provoked a news crew to investigate after chronic neighborhood complaints. The dogs were kept in two cages in the yard, and when the news crew questioned the man surnamed Liang, he yelled “get out, or I will let my dogs bite you,” and showed his penis to drive away reporters. The neighbors claimed they sometimes needed to stay in hotels, but Liang refused to make changes. Soon his family convinced him to return inside. Seeing the reporters walking around his house, he yelled and showed his private parts again, this time from the balcony and wielding a beer bottle. Would you notice that the window’s reflection of twilight is beautiful? From March 18, to June 18, a concept art installation is designed to connect the public with the experience every day. It works by stepping into one of three 12-meter-long, makeshift cinemas to peer out a broad, screen-shaped window. As daily life passes by, well-known film scores support a plot that develops in the moment with a camera capturing audience reaction from the back of the room, while that camera’s footage will be kept as a surprise. Dutch artist Job Koelewijn once convinced an art gallery to cut a hole in its wall as an exhibit of reality, but after two years of complaints from gallery stakeholders, he turned down invitations from other museums to do the same. Instead, he sliced a broad opening into a container on wheels. Swiss artist and curator Klaus Littmann later joined with improvements to the original concept and together they have toured five Swiss cities from 2010 to 2012 before last month’s Chinese debut in Dongguan. The crucial element is the music, which “gives the movie a new dimension,” said Littmann. While they say the project has neither linguistic nor cultural boundaries, famous Chinese soundtracks were added in hopes for a more personal connection complimenting the new locations and weather conditions. During a chauffeured tour around downtown, Littman chose locations after witnessing movement and action of people and cars outside of Yulan Theater, compared to spots like the east gate at People’s Park. There he said, senior citizens were sitting in wheelchairs all day long. While at the entrance of Dongcheng Walking Street he saw a film scene. “It was not like I try to say this is typical Chinese, because everything is typical Chinese here,” Littmann said. “For me it’s only important to have different characters—crowded or peaceful.” The exhibit can be seen at the Lingnan Museum of Fine Arts as well. Dutch artist Job Koelewijn once convinced an art gallery to cut a hole in its wall ... With sponsorship from ArtsRouge International, an organization based in Dongguan promoting artistic exchange, the project has gained government support. “I realize the government really wants to have responsibility to install Dongguan as a very good city in the culture,” Littmann said. The cinema will open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. until June 18. Then they travel to other Pearl River Delta cities before heading to Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou next year. www.heredg.com » April 2015 7 SCENE Novelty Pet To some, they are ugly, creepy even. To local Liaobu businessman, Zhong Zhiming, spiders are his favorite and “easiest to care for” pet. Newly popular in China and regulated from import, Zhong has slowly built and bred his collection of tarantulas over the last five years from the few that decorated his pharmacies to hundreds from all over the world. To store these large, hairy arachnids, Zhong has rented a one-room, second-floor apartment in a residential house. The 10-sq. meter room is lined from corner to corner with shelves of plastic containers where they can quietly stay in a prone position for hours. Next to the door, an incubator is filled with hundreds of eggs and babies. “As long as they don’t hurt humans, it’s OK,” said next door neighbor Ms. Xie. The biggest, one of Zhong’s favorites, is a female kept in an aquarium minijungle, which in the wild can grow up to 30 centimeters across. Among his almost 100 species, some are rare beauties. The Gooty sapphire from India, for example, reflects a brilliant metallic blue color with intricate patterns on its abdomen. Import law forbids the spiders from being mailed, but Zhong has been able to walk them across the Hong Kong border and he works with other area breeders to nurture the offspring. Although a single, fist-sized tarantula can sell for up to RMB 1,000, Zhong claims to keep them only as a hobby. 8 HERE! DONGGUAN » April 2015 Gallery Brings Latin Art Since the beginning of 2015, a small but noticeable art gallery has opened its doors to the public and to a handful of talented Mexican artists. Dilio Gallery co-owner Jackie You, hails from Taiwan, but he is joining his family who does business here in Dongguan in industrial design and is hoping the gallery, which is located in Guancheng District’s Yunhe creative community will become popular with the city’s modern interior designers. “If these kinds of art pieces can match with their design, that is going to be one of my concerns,” said You. The solid, industrial gallery displays a fine collection of Latin-influenced mixed media paintings and sculptures. Thinking that local taste is more knowledgeable about the international art scene, the gallery feels it’s the right time to introduce pieces such as Renaissance-style busts with exotic features and heavily troweled colorscapes. “It’s very challenging for us, too. It’s a big risk for us to buy these kinds of sculptures as well, but we are willing to take that kind of risk,” said Jody Zeng, marketing director for Dilio. NINE DRAGONS PAPER YISHION CLOTHING #WomenRule #GoingNational The papermaking giant has drawn considerable amounts of attention in China’s media from the likes of the Xinhua News Agency and the South China Morning Post, because of its chairman, Zhang Yin, who in 2006 became the first woman to top “China’s Rich List,” a Forbe’s style ranking by the Hurun Report. She got her start working at the bottom rungs, as a purchaser in Hong Kong for a mainland paper company. In 1996, Zhang founded Nine Dragons. The industry in Dongguan is a competitive market, but Zhang says her company will maintain growing profits from areas like packaging. That’s thanks to China’s ever increasing affinity for online shopping. “Buying clothes? Go to Humen Town,” is the golden rule for shoppers in Dongguan. Humen is home to manufacturers of clothing. And Yishion is one of the most well-known brands. They specialize in casual clothing and have gained a position in the youngsters’ market. While the factories in Dongguan have dominated the manufacturing market, Yishion is one of the few brands in Dongguan that has their own design team. The company now also has teams on brand management, product development and sales, leading it to be known for famous spokespersons including Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, actor Han Geng and South Korean actress Jun Ji-hyun. COSMO LADY UNDERWEAR CHINA EVERBRIGHT GROUP #PantyRaid #LocationLocationLocation This brand is quite popular among young Chinese girls. The story of its founder Zheng Yaonan rising from a security guard to be the owner of an underwear empire is quite inspirational. Zheng first worked as a security guard in a Wal-Mart in Shenzhen. But nothing is impossible for a willing heart. Zhang watched how the salespeople worked the products and studied customers’ behavior at Wal-Mart, which led him to open a small shop selling cosmetics. Cosmo Lady underwear, as a brand, did not have a big name when it first came into being in Dongguan’s Fenggang Town in 1998, but it has, since last year, been listed on the Hong Kong exchange. The predecessor of the “university” is a school of management that the company founded in Dongguan back in 2003. In 2014, the former president of the company, Cai Dabiao, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for illegal appropriations. The company is currently headed by the brother of Cai’s wife, who is reportedly the real mastermind behind the company. HE LIU SHAN #HomeBody Born 10 years before Zhen Kung fu, this local brand, the one most foreigners call the “Swan Restaurant” due to its red and white bird logo, was once the older, wiser brother of the Dongguan fast food chains. Without clear positioning and specialization, it has been left far behind by competing younger siblings. Frank, an English teacher in Chang’an said he only knew Kung Fu when it comes to Chinese fast food brands. Hannah Salters, a teacher in Dongcheng said she didn’t know the name of this brand and hadn’t eaten there. She said that the Chinese places she had eaten were for dim sum and dumplings. Time might be more difficult for He Liu Shan as the newer chains emerged. DONGGUAN » April 2015 Old Time Monopoly by Tracy Lu How Dongguan’s Co-Ops Survived the Fall A photograph taken in the 1980s from behind the famed West Gate, in it we can see the size of the Dongguan Co-op’s headquarters, one of the city’s tallest buildings during the era, displaying in red characters, “Supply and Marketing Co-op Building” for all to see. hroughout the first three decades of the PRC, a centrally controlled economy was applied to the country. China was underdeveloped and closed to the world. No private and foreign businesses were allowed. The country became the only monopoly and was in charge of the distribution of all the resources. Everybody, for the most part, ate the same amount of food, wore the same clothes and used the same products. In vast rural areas, supply and marketing cooperatives were set up to supply everything farmers needed, such as fertilizer, pesticide and daily necessities, and bought everything they produced. Entering the 1980s, as the market opened and capitalism thrived with China’s characteristics, the cooperatives no longer monopolized the rural market and faded from the public thought. The ones that couldn’t adapt to the new market and the new rules of doing business were closed. Others with the vision to invest in new business plans have thrived with significantly growing sales figures. The Rise The elders of remote areas are still familiar with the crisp sound of the bell that indicated the 16 HERE! DONGGUAN » April 2015 arrival of a co-op representative. At the sound, villagers gathered at the front of the village carrying what agricultural products they could to exchange for daily necessities. The initial funds for the co-op were gathered from farmers; 1 yuan per family member was pooled and added to a government subsidy. A few decades later the co-op would look much different. During the first decade of Dongguan’s co-op, goods and materials were in extreme shortage. Without any other suppliers, residents of At the mention of the Huashang Company, Yan Liangen doesn’t try to conceal from his face a gleeful pride. He was the head of the co-op when the company, which was really more a department of the co-op tasked with running its headquarter offices, made a splash. He witnessed and operated the grand opening in 1987 of its 11-story building. It was home to a shopping center on the 1st and 2nd floors and a hotel with a restaurant from the 4th to 10th. Located beside the Xichenglou (West Gate) in Guancheng, the company was launched merely to make use of this building, which was considered a “How can we ignite all the firecrackers at the same time?” Yan asked himself. remote villages relied on the cooperatives to supply everything they needed. It wasn’t until the 60’s that co-op branches were opened in each village to serve demand. The opening ceremony, according to Yan, was a sensation across the country due to a national commodity trade fair created for the event. It attracted 670 representatives of 303 cooperatives from 22 provinces and cities. “All rooms at downtown hotels were booked for us,” Yan beamed. “It was pretty rare for an inferior city to organize such a fair.” The 10 lines of 40-meter-long firecrackers dangling from the top of the building all the way to the ground, plus the 10 lions that swung under each, made for an incredible scene. “How can we ignite all the firecrackers at the same time?” Yan asked himself. “In the end we borrowed ten walkie-talkies from the Public Security Bureau, the only place with this kind of equipment.” After decades of accumulating resources, wealth and reputation, the cooperatives had reached a peak, able to build an 11-story headquarters with its name atop, however, the surface affluence didn’t fix profound, underlying problems. Soon, entering the 1990s, its success abated. The Decline, the Vision As the Reform and Open-Up policy, China’s economic reform, charged into fruition, private, foreign and shareholding businesses began to flourish. Many exclusive businesses and state-owned enterprises were opened to the public. Competition and foreign investment grew, business did better and became more flexible. Consumers never before had so much choice, they didn’t have to buy and sell products through the co-op. The organization faced unprecedented difficulties, but for some, it was an opportunity. The lack of market vision for some leaders led to the decline or end of cooperatives. When the targets and rules changed, some didn’t see or invest in their potential for business. Instead, they maintained old businesses styles even when they stopped profiting. In the old times, the government would pay for the loss, but times had changed. All affiliated companies and basic level cooperatives need to take responsibility for their own losses. “For example, before we would store 50,000 tons of fertilizer, now only a few hundred tons are enough,” explained Yan. “There are many ways to serve people, you can sell clothes. But some people just couldn’t think of it.” In the old times, the government would pay for the loss, but times had changed. Although most closed their doors, new businesses were set up as co-op branches seized the moment with logistic and storefront infrastructure waiting for a next move. For example, one turned out to be a pioneer in the pawn and auction business. There was no competition for such a business, they had all been wiped out in 1949 by a centralized economy. In 1992, Yan submitted a detailed proposal to the government about opening Dongguan’s first auction house, and explained how it was practical to open pawn shops at the same time. The proposal beat out another two agencies to win the license. This shop, opened by the co-op in the 1980s, sold daily necessities. In rural areas before the 1990s, shops like these were the only place to supplies. When the economy moved toward a more open market and private business grew, many co-ops like this 1990s hardware store closed their doors for good. “Only the market economy will generate this kind of business,” Yan said. “Dongguan was full of smugglers in the 90s, and they liked to gamble. When they lost money, they sold their motorcycles to our pawnshop and invested in some new products to smuggle.” In 1995, the transition of the auction houses and pawnshops exceeded RMB 715 million. The co-op was in lead of the market for almost ten years before individuals could easily get a license to open the same business. Nowadays, the cooperatives have lost some advantages in dominating the circulation of goods in rural areas, but it’s making the best profit in its history as before it did business in a planned way with many limitations. After over two decades of reform, the co-op has set up five affiliated companies in areas such as recycling resources, local specialties and butchery. The 30 township cooperatives have their own diversified investments in home appliances, gas stations, shopping malls and so on. In 2013, the co-op realized over RMB 51 million of revenue, up 15 percent than last year. www.heredg.com » April 2015 17 PRINCIPALS MATTER WHAT OUR SCHOOL LEADERS REALLY THINK by Laura Limowa I was a rebel. Getting sent to the principal’s office, while terrifying to some, was just another day in school for me. Through experience, I was numbed to the horror of standing on the opposite side of the principal’s desk while being called every name under the sun. Where I grew up, it was normal, to be shouted at, or even beaten when students did anything wrong. Gone are those days when principals were the bane of every teenager’s existence and everyone shuddered with fear at the very whisper of the evil one’s name. These days, our children are very lucky. We live in a tight international community, and everyone knows that our international schools thrive on exorbitant tuition rates. As a result, parents expect their children to be nurtured in a strong, effective way, while at the same time being treated like little prince and princesses. The job has evolved over the years, and being a leader requires principals to build trusting relationships with their faculty, staff, students, parents, and other pertinent members of the community. It is no easy task, and here we present to you the brave souls who carry this huge responsibility of educating our children, here, in and around dynamic Dongguan. They did what ?!?! She is young, but has no problem commanding the respect of her staff and faculty. While she has a strong mind of her own, she listens and accepts their opinions. “Happy staff, happy school!” Hina says. “I am also very hands-on. I go around the entire school, sit in on classes and interact with the students on a daily basis.” Hina has known since youth that she wanted to be a teacher. She specialized in early childhood education, and post graduation, her teaching posts were paired with advisory roles. She taught in England for a while, and on a holiday to Bolivia, she encountered under-privileged children. That was her ‘ah-ha’ moment. She applied for an international job, got hired by EtonHouse International School, and within four years, assumed the role of principal. Her biggest inspiration and influence was her father, who was also her mentor. “He was the one who taught me about the value of education. He would make me watch documentaries and read national geographic, and collect the weekly Tree of Knowledge series. He was a really good man and really about making the world a better place.” When asked if being a principal has changed her (besides the title adding 10 years to her age), she smiles. “I know that every decision and choice I make in everyday life reflects on the school, and I want to inspire people. I believe we can change the world through education, and by providing a safe, stable and happy learning environment. We encourage children to be the best that they can be.” When not working, Hina likes to immerse herself in nature, and indulge in her love of photography. She loves to dance, is a social butterfly with a large network of friends who love her, and believes in enjoying every moment. She is also quite the artist. “Once, I drew graffiti on the outside wall of my She loves to dance, is a social butterfly with a large network of friends who love her, and believes in enjoying every moment. school cafeteria, and was caught by my principal. It is our duty to educate children to be responsible and caring citizens of the future, and to inspire them to achieve wonderful things.” Handing the check over to Treasure of Hope after EtonHouse’s 2014 Charity Auction Day. www.heredg.com » April 2015 19 While he loves his new role, he misses teaching and interacting directly with the children. The Poster Boy If you met Luke on the streets, it would be hard to believe that he is the principal of one of the top international schools we have. Blessed with youth and good looks, Luke, a first-time principal, leads his crew with ease, by listening and valuing their opinions and input. After a few years of teaching in Canada, he wanted a different experience, and so he went to work in QSI Chongqing for two years, before moving to QSI Dongguan. He has been here for six years, holding the role of vice-principal the last three before recently assuming the role of principal. While he loves his new role, he misses teaching and interacting directly with the children. “Having to deal Extracurricular activities can include traveling and coaching his students. with parents on a larger scale is a challenge, but I always listen, respect and try to get them involved as much as possible. My door is always open, and parents are always welcome to come talk things out with me.” When asked if it gets lonely at the top, Luke says “I do not think of myself as being at the top, but more of a problem-solver. Being from the QSI group, there is a large network of QSI directors across China and so it is easy for me to reach out for networking and advice.” His love for children shines through when talking affectionately about one particular experience. “I was coaching a 9-year-old girl with her homework and was in the middle of explaining it. Unknowingly, she had been distracted by my very hairy forearms and could not resist the urge to touch.” As Luke glanced down to meet the daydreaming eyes of the young student, he felt being in that moment when her focus snapped back to the material world was a rare connection with childhood curiosity. “Her expression was priceless.” On the weekends, Luke spends time with his family and hangs out with his friends. He also likes to explore the old parts of Dongguan, play basketball and tennis. Golden words of advice he would give to parents: “Be real about who your kids are. With an air of confidence about him, Josh leads his school in a collaborative way. He believes in everyone putting their egos aside, and working together. A perfectionist, Josh likes to handle things looking at the big picture, but at the same time work on the small details. “A crooked painting annoys me,” says Josh, “I may have OCD!” He laughs. After graduating from business management school, Josh taught P.E. in an all-boys school in Tennessee. And when his parents started TLC 10 years ago in Dongguan, he saw an opportunity, and grabbed it. After a year of teaching at TLC, he found his passion for teaching, and did his masters in teaching online. Following that, he held the role of viceprincipal for a year, principal for two, and is currently the chief administrator of TLC International School. Josh’s face lights up when talking about his predecessor. “Before me, my mom, Ms. Jamie Kempf led the school with grace and love. She set the tone and precedence in establishing that, a school is just there to support families, and ultimately, the responsibility of bringing up a child belongs to his parents. We are just there to help and guide them along the way.” Ask if he had to make any compromises since he took over as principal, Josh says, “My priorities have changed. There is definitely a lot more responsibility, and it can be a 24/7 job because there are just so many areas to take care of. But all in all, it has been a blessing.” “Jesus Christ is my ultimate mentor. He has shaped my view of education.” Josh is passionate about his faith and on weekends, he serves at church and Haven of Hope, a charity set up by his wife. He can also be seen hanging out at the malls. “I love to shop!” He says unapologetically. His students adore him. “There was once, the kids covered my entire office with paper, and on it, were 100 reasons “… the responsibility of bringing up a child belongs to his parents. And he was not always good. When he was in college, he, along with a few other friends pushed a giant trash can against the door so that when their (very unlucky) friend opened the door, tons of water would spill all over him! It is amazing. I have the best job in the world.” Michael beams with pride. “Nature versus nurture? We are endowed genetically with natural tendencies, but with the right nurturing, we are capable of doing anything, and sometimes even overcome some of nature’s seeming impediments.” On the weekends, Michael still works, and when he’s not, he stays home to watch TV, Skype with his family, and enjoy his solitude. The young Michael, full of hopes and dreams, wanted to be a marine biologist, or rescue African animals. He was big into exploration. He was also the guy you loved to hate, one of those people who could party all night before a big exam and still ace it. “In College, I skipped 95 percent of my Zoology classes, because it was always pub night before. Despite skipping classes, I still managed to top the class.” With his wealth of experience, Michael shares an interesting encounter. “Africans practice polygamy. Once, when we had a parent-teacher conference, a boy came with two mothers. I did not know which mother to direct my questions at.” Affectionately called “Santa Claus” by some kids, he indulges them. “In my first year, the pre-kindergarten children started a trend of flicking my tie whenever I walked by. And so for a whole year, my tie got flicked anytime I walked by any of these little ones.” Golden words of advice for parents: “Love them, support them, but hold them accountable for their actions. She believes that she is still growing and learning everyday. Especially since the focus of a principal, more often than not, becomes more business than educational. She feels that there are always new challenges, and dealing with these challenges keeps her cautious, aware, and young. Amidst cries and screams of children in the background, I ask Ann if she has ever lost her cool with any child. She says, “When a child behaves in a certain manner, he is trying to express himself. When that happens, we as educators need to remember that it is not personal, and with that in mind, you will not lose your cool with the child.” And how does she communicate and engage with their mainly Chinese student body? “Through a translator, and a lot of mime!” She laughs. Ann does not get out much during the weekends. She stays home to knit soft toys, socks and hats to give away. Trying to control her emotions, she tells me about a turning point in her life. “When I was in grade 3, my parents were very busy, and they sent me to a boarding school. It was all in French, and totally foreign to me. I did not do well that year. Following that, my parents switched me to a regular day school, but I did not work very hard and actually failed that year. Looking back, I think the trauma of being sent away to a boarding school and learning a totally new language really affected me, so that when I had a little freedom, I took advantage of that and become rebellious. But thankfully, at that point, my parents realized what was going on, took measures and I turned around.” Golden words of advice she has for parents, “Have boundaries with your children but at the same time allow them to experiment. He is probably the closest to the stereotype of an oldschool principal. After three years, he felt like a new adventure, and ended up in Utahloy, where he has been head of school for the past four years. He believes that running a school is very much about building teams and collaboration between students, teachers and parents, and it is important to provide a vision so people have a collective dream that leads to good judgment. “Within the school environment, I need to make sure that I manage people with good judgment and fairness, so if I seem to be friendly with particular groups in the community, then people would think that I’ve got favorites. So, I have to be a little distant, and in that respect, it can get a little lonely. But, I still have a close network of friends I share holidays and experiences with.” His first five years of teaching, were in a fairly poor school in Melbourne with lots of immigrants coming from Vietnam, right after the war. There were also lots of other refugees from all nationalities. That experience made him want an international job, and he got a post in Vanuatu in an agricultural college for local indigenous children on the South Pacific island. Since then, he has worked in France, Venezuela, Melbourne, Australia and in Nice, in the south of France where he was the director of the international school. “So, I have to be a little distant, and in that respect, it can get a little lonely.” 24 HERE! Michael comes from a very strict school in Australia, where it was a rule to wear a coat and tie and be properly dressed. Cherish those years because children grow up so quickly. Teach your children to explore and not be frightened of getting their hands dirty. Do not put your children in cotton wool and be over-protective. Have confidence in them.” The Shi Fu Alex comes across as a very humble person. Quiet and observant, he speaks slowly with careful thought. “My first administrator role was in Xi’An Middle School, as its vice principal. I stayed there for 11 years. In 2004, Hanlin Experimental School opened and I was asked to be the principal of the junior high school. After a few years, I am now the Principal of the whole international department, which is a new department, so I am the pioneer.” When Alex first started as a principal of Hanlin, he had the burden of marketing and selling the school as a private school offering an international education. But it worked out well. “All parents who send their children here are not like other common parents. Their goal is to prepare their children to live abroad someday. They think differently and focus more on character building and composure.” Alex believes that children are like blank pieces of paper, and we can easily draw on them. Through education, the right environment and teachers’ influences, undesirable character traits can be changed. Hanlin is a boarding school and children spend five days out of a week there, so good character Alex Hu Hanlin Experimental School can really be enforced and drilled into the students. Alex did not start out aspiring to be an educator. “We were from the village and were very poor. All I ever wanted to do was change my family’s financial situation and give them a better life. Upon graduation, according to exam scores, I was assigned to a teacher’s training college, and that was that. At that time, you were considered lucky if you had a job—any job. It was only through time, that I started to like it and excel in it.” Fun for Alex is very different from what fun is to kids these days. He was fearless as a child. Turning a deaf ear to repeated warnings, he would lead his friends to go explore the caves in He Yang. The caves supposedly housed toxic substances and had dangerous overhanging formations that could collapse at any time. These days, Alex hangs out at Tong Sha Reservior on the weekends, enjoying the scenery and fresh air. He also spends time helping his wife with household chores and shopping. Having been through it himself, Alex can relate, and often organizes trips to “We were from the village and were very poor. So poor, some children do not have the means to get an education. We would organize students to go spend two weeks living with the villagers. This not only provides a meaningful exchange for learning and bringing some aid, but also reminds our children of how privileged they are.” Golden words of advice for parents: “As your children get older, you have to respect and try to understand them. Litchi, the small, but powerfully sweet fruit is a pillar of the area’s agriculure trade, and can be picked by tourists annually for a few dozen RMB. HISTORY Dalang was first spotted on the map as a central part of a county more than 1,600 years ago. It had been a political, economic and cultural center for 200 years at its time. About its name origins, there was a kind of grass that was widely grown named lang grass, so locals named their land Dalang, or big grass. Over time, people began to use a simplified “lang” instead of the original one, which is what its name looks like today. TODAY Dalang is located in the south of Dongguan, east of Songshan Lake and north of Shenzhen. Today, the cardigan you are wearing now is probably made here. Dalang is heavily invested in the knitting industry. It has over 3,000 knitting factories and a fully developed network covering all the parts involved from research and design to the training of workers. Most of its sweaters are exported overseas, and it even has its own Dalang International Woolen Knitwear Fair every year. Knitting has become Dalang’s prime industry and it has won fame as China’s Cardigan Town. Dalang has also made leaps in the IT and manufacturing industries; its economy is among the leaders in Dongguan. WHAT CAN I DO? Aside from the sweaters you might be wearing on the street, Dalang is a town of basketball. It’s not an 36 HERE! DONGGUAN » April 2015 exaggeration to say people are avid fans of the game. Every village has its own basketball team, and some even support two. Dalang’s men basketball team has claimed seven consecutive championship titles from the Dongguan Basketball League. It’s also home to another CBA basketball team, the Dongguan New Century Leopards. We all know Dongguan is a basketball city, but where can we really feel its heartbeat? Now you may know where to go. In Caibian Village, there is a very beautiful temple named Fu De Tang, or Bliss Merit Hall. The temple was once a dump site behind an ancestral hall. Then the villagers decided to turn it into a place for the elderly to relax and pass the time. Completed in 2006, the temple is an intricately crafted two-story construction. It resembles the classic Lingnan architectural style in which you can see stone carvings, the frequent usage of grey bricks and colorful roof tiles. On the first floor, it has facilities for older villagers to enjoy. It’s even cooler on the second floor, where there is a folk life museum. Although there is nothing ancient, the room exhibits folk artifacts from the last century, especially the ones from old time farming, reviving the techniques used by their ancestors to live and work. With a first step into the museum, you’ll find quite a feeling of time reversal. The temple is clean, tranquil and appealing. It’s a good choice for a weekend trip. If you are looking for something ancient, Dajing Tou Village will be your pick. A cluster of ancient buildings dating from the Ming Dynasty are well preserved in accordance with their original look. Among them are 13 houses, a school, and an ancestral hall. When overlooked from the sky, the outline of the cluster actually takes the shape of a crab, with two 800-yearold wells resembling two big eyes. It’s believed to have been designed according to Fengshui principles. Talking a stroll at a place from 600 years ago could be something different. Dalang has another big thing to its name. Joining the U.K., U.S. and Japan, China is building its first Spallation Neutron Source research center here. Once it is completed in 2018, Dalang will have China’s largest scientific device. It’s a shame, but it won’t be open as a tourist attraction. GETTING THERE Dalang is convenient to reach. There are buses to Dalang from the three main bus stations. Bus L4, which goes through downtown, can take you there, too. The journey time will be about two hours. If taking a taxi there, you only have to spend 45 minutes and about RMB 80. This image of Dalang’s newly completed Songfu Road was taken in January of 2008 showing the progress in towns throughout Dongguan. TOWN FACTS Location: South Dongguan Area: 118 sq. kilometers Population: 380,000 Journey Time: around 50 minutes from downtown Local Attractions: Fu De Tang temple, Dajing Tou Village, basketball 38 HERE! DONGGUAN » April 2015 www.heredg.com » April 2015 39 BUSINESS by Steven Elsinga The Keeper of the Chop We all need a little help sometimes. This month the professionals at Dezan Shira & Associates share advice on delegating in your China business. n any business, one person delegates power to another to look after his/her interest. But how to ensure the latter doesn’t abuse this power for his/her own benefit is a classic dilemma known as the agency problem. It is as pressing an issue in China as in any other country, but Chinese laws and practices deal with this problem differently than most. For the foreign investor, this brings along a number of issues to be aware of. Company Seals or “Chops” In most countries, individuals can bind the company they are working for if they are authorized by its board to do so. Those actions done with the apparent approval of the board may be seen as the company’s actions. The decisive factor is what outward appearance the company has created. If someone dealing with the company could reasonably assume an individual was authorized to act on its behalf—based on the appearance set by the company— the company is bound. • The company chop contains the company’s full name in Chinese and functions as the official signature of the company. Company chops are used for all basic operations and can cover almost all other chop functions except for that of an invoice or customs chop. • The finance chop is used for basic company operations, as well as opening a bank account, issuing checks, authenticating financial documents (e.g. tax filings, compliance documents, etc.). It is a compulsory chop. • The contract chop is used exclusively for signing and authenticating contracts. • The invoice chop is used for issuing and authenticating official invoices and fapiaos. It is not a compulsory chop and can be replaced by the finance chop. Allocating Power in the Company Legal representative While it is always wise to carefully consider how much power to delegate to different staff members, there are several uniquely Chinese considerations. One of these is the position of legal representative. Along with the person holding the company chop, the legal representative has full power to bind the company. He or she must be the chairman of the board, executive director or general manager of the company. They are appointed when the company is created, and his or her name is registered in the articles of association, with the AIC and on the company business license. Changing the legal representative is a tedious and lengthy process, which requires changes of the articles of association and amending the business license. In the meantime, the legal representative could still legally bind the company. A recent court case determined that the company’s internal resolution appointing a new legal representative takes precedence over the name registered with the AIC, so any unauthorized acts by the exiting legal representative can be reversed. Those actions done with the apparent approval of the board may be seen as the company’s actions. The way the rule is phrased shows that the outcome can only be decided on a case-by-case basis. While somewhat vague, this allows room for flexibility and interpretation. • The customs chop is used for customs declarations on import/export goods (for companies engaged in cross-border trading). In China, a company is bound whenever a contract or other document is affixed with the company seal or chop. This is more straightforward in the sense that one can immediately tell whether a company has approved the content of a document or not. What makes it dangerous, however, is that whoever holds the chops can bind the company. On top of that, there is the risk of forged chops. It is not uncommon for individuals to have their own chop as well. For example, the legal representative can have a personal chop to be affixed along with the company chop. Such a personal chop can accompany or replace the person’s signature. The company, finance and legal representative chop (if present) need to be recorded with the Public Security Bureau, the Administration of Industry and Commerce (AIC), and with the local bank. Companies in China have different kinds of chops for different purposes: 40 HERE! DONGGUAN » April 2015 However, reversing unauthorized acts of the legal representative would likely require intervention by the court system. If you are faced with a legal representative gone rogue, most of the damage will have already been done by the time the court has pronounced its ruling. The legal representative is regarded as being fully responsible for the acts of the company, even if he or she did not authorize or approve of them. In theory, they can be held personally liable for the debts of the company. There have been instances where a foreign legal representative has been detained or otherwise prevented from leaving China, because the company was involved in a commercial dispute or was in arrears with a tax payment. For these reasons, it is advisable not to involve legal representative too much in the daily operations of the company. While technically possible, it is not advisable to have the general manager also be the legal representative. Foreign investors may consider appointing a legal representative that does not reside in China, whose signature is only required two or three times a year, for example, the chairman of the board. General manager The general manager is in charge of day-to-day operations. They can at the same time be a director of the company, but this is not necessary. It is a powerful position in the company, and foreign investors should take care to appoint a trustworthy individual. Sadly, it is not uncommon in China for a general manager to commit fraud, engage in self-dealing or misappropriate company funds. There are several ways foreign investors can protect themselves against misconduct by the general manager. Don’t give the general manager unrestricted access to the company’s chops. Set rules for the use of chops, such as requiring major decisions to also bear the chop or signature of the director, supervisor or legal representative. Investors can also hire a third party to act as custodian of the company chops and seals. Limit the powers of the general manager in the articles of association. This could include capping the amount of money a general manager is allowed to deal with. Investors may also set a fixed term for the position, such as one year. At the end of the year the board needs to renew his or her term. Due to China’s protective labor law, firing an employee can be rather difficult. Companies often try to let go of employees by mutual agreement, because dismissing an employee unilaterally can be very difficult and expensive. It is not unheard of that a foreign company wants to dismiss a local general manager for misconduct, only to find itself blackmailed into an astronomical severance payment because the general manager is in control of the company chops and other essential documents. Lastly, foreign investors may decide to engage an external party to perform an internal audit on the Chinese subsidiary. While delegating power always requires a degree of trust, there are a few simple measures every foreign investor should consider to mitigate the risks its Chinese subsidiary is exposed to. Roberts Who Would Know A Day in the Life Adnan Yucel’s resume reads like an adolescent’s diary, jumping from one place to another seemingly every day. He is general manager to Wanda’s new Vista Hotel, and it is as you’ll learn chatting with the affable, laid-back leader, the norm for hoteliers and their industry. Though he will tell you that every day and every guest is a new experience to be marked up to practice, the foundation of Mr. Yucel’s leadership style and seemingly natural positioning in the service industry, is his family, Azerbaijan heritage and training. Born in 1970, he grew up in the Istanbul of old, a place of Persian rugs, haggling and, maybe surprisingly, drinking and dancing. “My father ... he loved to enjoy his life,” said Yucel. “One of the key points in Turkish culture is that it’s a cheerful culture. People love to sing and dance in original Turkey.” And so this, he took from his father. To enjoy life, allowing him to be a natural networker who loves to go out, meet new, “not standard stereotype people,” and engage in interesting conversations. His mother taught him the fine balance between a strong hand and a soft touch. “She would let me find my way, but if it is needed she would slap me once.” And Yucel admits to deserving, as we all did, some of those smacks of the head. He says he was a tough, lost kid with too much energy. Studying and boarding in the oldest Turkish high school in the world, he worked hard writing stories, poetry and editing a school magazine, and on a few occasions charging into fights over football matches and the honor of lady classmates. But mother’s hand straightened him out, while letting him discover his own nature. Adnan Yucel But it was uncle, a man of Turkish-German dual citizenship, that he imparting upon him most of his business acumen. A man of high energy as well, he ran the German half of the Persian carpet trade, raced rally cars, ran marathon’s and wrote what Yucel calls an important book on the finer points of carpets. It’s a combination that, when added to coming up through international hotel brands and a Turkish culture that puts man at the center of the universe as God’s guest, has created a natural leader in the hospitality business. Benefit of Experience Mr. Yucel’s first position in hospitality was his longest held. Circa 1992 he started, still in university, with Swiss Hotels, but spent only his first three months at the job he was hired for. He moved from concierge to reception then spent a year as night manager in 1998. From there he moved to front office at the Golden Tulip Hotel and Casino. A year there, another year as reservations manager, then he was recruited by an old manager to his first China position in Dalian. He stayed there an entire year and change before taking the next opportunity in Boston, and the story goes on like this back through Turkey, Saudi Arabia and landing finally back in China, here in Dongguan. He said he wanted to get back sooner, but in a 2006 interview, he was scared away by a “dark” hotel owner that fired the hotel’s GM while General Manager – Wanda Vista dongGuan Hotel Favorite cigar? Cohiba, I think. And Romeo and Juliet I should say. I don’t want to betray them as well. Favorite wine? I love red wind and shiraz grapes. Tie or bowtie? Tie, or no tie. Bowtie occasionally for events. It’s a part of my life now Then what is the proper setting for no tie in business meeting? After dinner. 42 HERE! DONGGUAN » April 2015 interviewing for a lesser position and offered him the job. That was too turbulent even for this ladder climber. With round-the-world experience, Yucel talks about living the life and paying dues to be truly affective. “There are many guys with titles, but empty. They’ve been promoted out of default. But when they face difficulty they cannot solve the problem.” He advises that keeping staff in this time of young Chinese professionals who are less patient than ambitious is key to success in China’s business world. “The people are the difference,” he says. Talk to them. He discovers valuable points for improvement from even the most fresh of entrance -positioners. At the same time, he says you will observe your staffs’ strengths and weaknesses. In this way, you’ll have a good understanding when it is time to move staff around or promote from within. While empathy is his main advice to Dongguan business leaders, lead by example is the paddle to his canoe. That doesn’t mean do and let them follow precedent. He means to teach through parables of your own experience, not through laying down rules and regulations. He feels that his staff learns from his own stories of troubles more, like the time two of his own security guards stabbed each other right in front of him, or the time in Boston that he had the manager of the Rolling Stones handcuffed and thrown out. It’s less perturbed by construction along main thoroughfares, has preserved much of its green space, and pound for pound, may cater to the foreigner’s tastes even more than its parent urban core. But Changsheng Xilu’s Japanese-Korean street, however earnest, is rather unremarkable. When I visit a themed commercial strip like this, I want to see something beyond the façade—a few supermarkets, a specialty item store or some cultural artifact to impart that theme. So I strolled up and down the street a few times, expectant, and peering into each restaurant to see which might whet my appetite. What it is, however, is a street like most any other, which happens to have numerous restaurants of the same persuasion. In the end, I literally flipped a coin to decide which restaurant to try. I crossed a tiny bridge to enter a place with a ChineseJapanese name, translated roughly as Our Home, and was led to a small private room with recessed seating. Soon I was munching on sushi, tofu and fried dumplings. Good sushi is hard to find in Dongguan. Most spots are powered by conveyor belts looping hour-old sushi like a worn out Lady Gaga single. Our Home split the difference, serving up flavorful cuts of salmon, but also rather bland, stringy tuna. The freshness of Japanese food was all but absent, and most of the flavor seemed to come from the sauces rather than the ingredients or cooking method. I really enjoy the overly-polite, soft-spoken uniformed Japanese waitress whose hair is neatly tied back, gesturing sparingly, and bowing slightly when addressing me. It’s the difference between dining on Japanese cuisine and eating food from Japan. Our Home’s staff was friendly and courteous beyond belief. I would invite them to my birthday party. But something about a waitress in a stonewash denim jacket and T-shirt with nonsensical English scrawled across it sucks away a lot of the authenticity from the shoji screen doors and Buddha statues. Chang’an’s Japanese-Korean street and its tenants could benefit a lot from attention to detail. 1. Located near area landmarks, opposite the RT-Mart and 100 meters away from McDonald’s, it is unlike most other similar venues in China. It’s a place where you can drink and still talk with music tuned to a background level, not deafening noise. You can probably count all the permanent foreign residents in Dalang on your fingers, and you have the best chance of meeting them all in New Bar. Most of the clients will be Chinese, usually still surprised to find a foreigner in such a distance from downtown Dongguan. The cozy and relaxed atmosphere, together with a few drinks, makes it easy to find new friends. Normally, people arrive on their own and in groups, but leave together to eat somewhere else. Unfortunately, no hot food apart from French fries and chicken wings is served (probably due to licensing), so guests can concentrate on getting hammered. Prices are similar, but lower, to those found in Dongcheng. Carlsberg draft is between 20 and 28 RMB (small and large glasses), and a 3-liter barrel costs RMB 148. The selection of foreign beers is priced between RMB 15 and 30. Cocktails are either, RMB 25, 30 or 35, depending on the amount of alcohol inside. The bar personnel is pretty open-handed with giving free drinks, especially if you’re happy to share your whereabouts on WeChat. You won’t meet Marilyn Monroe, but you’ll see a lot of her. The beautiful decor is centered on sexy, foreign actresses, with a touch of classic European bar decoration. Their friendly staff doesn’t speak English, but bosses from Hong Kong do. And the girl behind the bar usually calls me to come whenever a foreigner walks in, so it would be great to meet any of you. 2. Especially, considering that there are no meters, and signage can be vague. In urban areas, most Chinese drivers know to park only in marked spots, however tough to find. As declared by the PRC law, no-parking zones include areas cordoned off between roads and sidewalks, or any street side pavement that is not marked for cars. Parking is also not allowed in front of construction sites, crosswalks, sharp curves or within 50 meters of streets, bridges and tunnels less than four meters wide. Then there are the regulations for within 30 meters of bus stops, first aid stations, gas stations, fire hydrants or fire department entrances. Don’t park there either. Parking illegally is popular in Dongguan, so much so that it seems unregulated, with tickets rarely found on windshields. Meter maids, though few, do exist to patrol the city. These specially tasked traffic police are called the Mobile Squad, or jī dòng dà duì. Officer Ye of Nancheng’s traffic detachment claims, “We patrol all areas, go to different sections every day, on a different schedule daily.” Parking fines can be as much as RMB 200 in Dongguan and should be paid before the annual registration of the vehicle’s license. Payment is a process of verifying the ticket with the traffic department and paying within 15 days. Should you miss these deadlines, a 2 percent fee will incur daily, up to half. For pedestrians and cyclers, cars on the sidewalk can be problematic. To curb this issue, citizens can report illegal parking in certain areas. The numbers aren’t easy to find. The trick is to call a town or district’s traffic police to ask for a complaint hotline. For Nancheng, call 2303-6122; call 2303-7122 in Dongcheng, and 8547-0331 in Chang’an. Home made by Robin Pier Give Me Crust There is a time to hold on to what’s dear to you, and there is a time to adapt. We can do both with a little homemade cooking. ave you ever missed something so intensely only to realize later on that at some point in time you’d suddenly stopped missing it at all? Or generally found yourself doing something you’d once thought would never appeal to you, having totally missed the point in which it first seemed like a good idea? My last 5 years in China have brought some moments like that, each of them quietly changing life in their own way. They’re all moments of cultural adaptation, and many of them have had to do with giving up foods I thought I’d never be able to live without only to be pleased with the effects of their absence or their reintegration in my diet later on. I unexpectedly fell in love with Chinese food when I came here. Though it’s not my favorite cuisine, I have certainly developed a deep appreciation. But, despite the culinary adventures I embarked on every time I went to a new kind of Chinese restaurant or tried new things with local friends and colleagues, I realized after a few months of living here how many foods from home I was missing. Things like plain yogurt, cheese and whole grain bread, and it took a while to say goodbye to them. At first, I refused to. I searched high and low. I’d visit local supermarkets only to be disappointed time after time with the oversweetened and over-processed imitations. Desperately wanting to find the one brand of yogurt sold in China that isn’t pre-sweetened, I tried variety after variety. But, they were all sweet, and some much more watery than I was used to. In fact I found it bizarre that many people drink yogurt with a straw. Cheese was equally disappointing; just about the only cheese I don’t like is processed cheese, but that’s pretty much all you can find most places. But the biggest disappointment has been bread. I like thick, crusty, savory or sour whole grain artisan bread in all kinds of flavors in varieties, but I usually don’t bother with overprocessed sweetened bread unless I’m actually eating sweets. I could find packages of “whole wheat” square toast bread in bread and cake shops, but they never tasted much different from the similar-looking white toast bread. And, for some reason that makes absolutely no sense to me, toast bread here is often sold in odd numbers of slices. Clearly, Chinese bread makers do not appreciate the amazingness of the sandwich. Then I discovered import stores, and it was a whole new world. I’d spend entire Saturday afternoons traveling around the city hitting up a store or two just so I could once again savor some real cheese or tortillas. In fact, once I became a bit burned out with Chinese food, I constantly craved foods from home and planned days off around shopping for and making things like pesto pasta lasagna. COOKING TIPS You can use most types of breads for French Toast. My favorite type to use is thick-cut slices of oval bread loaves. food items here than I ever would have back home and for less quality or more generic brands to boot. Finally, I began to find a balance. I found cheaper sources for my favorite imports and came to terms with the fact that I’d just have to give up some things or go broke. I stopped eating bread, cheese and plain yogurt altogether for a while, unless I dined at a Western restaurant. I started to notice how strange my body felt when I visited home and ate those things again, no longer used to digesting them. And finally, I learned to start making them myself or finding ways to use the products I could find in ways that I like. My French toast recipe is a product of that, and it’s a personal marker for how far I’ve come. Having always been a big fan of breakfast foods, I treat myself to Sunday morning French toast every now and then. Eating it reminds me of how much I used to love bread and how little I miss it anymore. The best thing about this recipe is that it uses that cheap, slightly sweet, over-processed toast square bread you can find everywhere, with a Western spin that you definitely can’t find unless you make it yourself. After a while, however, I started to realize I wasn’t saving much money since I was constantly spending much more on luxury French Toast Ingredients: Directions: • 4-5 pieces bread* • 4 eggs • ½ cup milk • 15mL/1 large spoonful flour • 15mL/1 large spoonful granulated sugar • Pinch of salt • A few dashes cinnamon • Butter • 5-10mL honey (optional) • Powdered sugar (optional garnish) • Fruit jam (optional garnish) • Honey or maple syrup (optional garnish) 1. This month— Flattery is a part of life, for some it is phony, for others it’s just a part of life. Which are you? ast month’s article generated unprecedented feedback, and also led to a number of questions seeking clarification. The most common responses, from both Chinese and expats, were in regards to the issue of what we might call insincere compliments—the tendency of Chinese to tell you your Mandarin or Cantonese is good the first time you say anything in Chinese, or how beautiful your country is, even though they have no way of knowing whether what they are saying is true. perhaps add an equally polite but meaningless, “And what about you?” For North Americans, this is normal, and understood. Nobody considers it insincere. But go to Europe, especially those countries where English is not a first language, and you’ll find many people who consider this an annoying and insincere expression. “Why are you asking me how I am, if you really don’t want to know?” In their cultures, asking someone how they are is indicative of a sincere desire to actually know how that person is doing. Another humorous question in this category was several expat men asking me, “Why do Chinese men always tell me I’m handsome?” Most Chinese readers responded with gratitude for pointing this out, in that they had been unaware that this was a problem, but were unsure why expats would respond so negatively to what they intend as behavior to indicate friendship. Many expats responded that this was one of their pet peeves, and they could not understand why Chinese so readily made such insincere compliments. Let’s illustrate the problem by taking it out of Chinese culture, and putting it in a context of North American culture. One of the most common greetings in North America is the ubiquitous, “How are you?” Of course, this question generally indicates no interest whatsoever in how you are; and they are not, in fact, requesting a detailed exposition on your current physical and emotional status. Unless you are the most intimate of friends, you should simply reply, “I’m fine, thanks!” And You can simply look at those Chinese compliments as being pretty much the same thing. It is the Chinese way of saying hello, and expressing friendliness. It is not intended to have any more authentic meaning than the North American “How are you?” It should not be interpreted as insincere, or as trying to ‘butter you up.’ HERE! DONGGUAN » April 2015 And that’s where the key difference lays. Generally speaking, in Western culture, when people comment on the appearance of a person they’ve just met, it is indicative of flirting, of some sort of physical or romantic attraction. It’s not something that one uses as a generic greeting. In China, just like other kinds of compliments, it generally has little real meaning at all. The Chinese guy who tells a foreign man that he’s handsome doesn’t really mean anything by it at all, it’s just a way of greeting and showing friendliness (and sorry guys, but a lot of the Chinese girls who are telling you that you’re handsome don’t really mean anything by it, either!). And how should you respond? By doing pretty much the same thing, by giving polite but meaningless compliments, such as, “Your English is quite good, too” (even if it isn’t), or “China is a beautiful country too.” You’ve now completed the ritual, and can move on. Another humorous question in this category was several expat men asking me, “Why do Chinese men always tell me I’m handsome?” Most expat To get the solutions to your confusion, send questions and observations to cultureteller@heredg.com. 60 men have probably experienced this, but outside of the gay/bisexual community, it is not common for men to say things like this to each other.
