Public Records Search Guide
PREFACE
Why use the LexisNexis services at lexis.com for public-records research?
™
®
➤
Because LexisNexis offers the most extensive collection
of public records information available. Drawn from 1,100
sources—nearly 1.5 billion individual and business records—
and growing continually, LexisNexis public records include:
• person locators
• business locators
• real property records
• personal property records
• business and corporation information
• judgments and liens
• civil and criminal court filings
• verdicts and settlements
• licenses
➤
Because you can use it in a host of applications.
Here are just a few examples:
• simplify due diligence
• locate elusive parties, witnesses, defendants,
judgment debtors, child support obligors, pension
beneficiaries, heirs, and others
• track ownership of assets
• find bankruptcy history
• verify facts such as license status and history,
a company’s exact name, and so on
• trace an individual’s business affiliations
• review Secretary of State filings
• gather competitive intelligence
➤
Because LexisNexis public records information is current.
For example, our property information is, on average, 120
days more current than our competitors. Also, we provide
important details about our public records information—
such as coverage, currentness, and frequency
or update in our source descriptions.
➤
➤
Because the LexisNexis services are fast and reliable.
Our efficient online system returns your search results very
quickly—an average response time of 10 seconds or less—
and you can count on the availability of the LexisNexis
services more than 99% of the time.
Because LexisNexis features enhance the value of
the information available. For example, you can:
• narrow or expand your search results
• use special characters, connectors, and search
commands to find just the information you need
• save searches for automatic updates
• keep search results for additional review later
in the day
• save or print your search results

SEARCH TIPS
SPECIAL CHARACTERS
Search for word variations by using exclamation points and asterisks. (Keep in mind that the
LexisNexis services will find standard pluralizations and possessives automatically.)
™
!
stands in for any number of characters at the end of a root word, for example:
greenf!
would find references to “greenfield”, “greenfeld”, “greenfeldt”
testi!
would find references to “testify”, “testified”, “testifies”,
“testimony”, “testimonial”
*
stands in for any single character within or at the end of a word (you can use more than one,
anywhere in a word except as the first letter), for example:
anders*n
would find references to “andersen” or “anderson”
w**nst**n
would find references to “weinstein” or its variants or misspellings
proct*r gamb**
would find references even when “Procter & Gamble” is misspelled
“”
indicates that the words or letters enclosed must appear as a contiguous phrase, for example:
“sink or swim inc” would view or as part of the search phrase, rather than as a
connector (refer to the Basic Connectors section)
“at&t”
would view the ampersand as part of the search term, rather than as an
alternate for the AND connector (refer to the Basic Connectors section)

of “Smith” (works well for searching peoples’ names, which may appear with
the last name first and with or without a middle name or initial)

Capitalization
The LexisNexis services do not normally differentiate between upper- and lower-case letters in search
words. This lets you type search words without having to think about capitalization, which does not
generally affect the meaning of your search. There are times, however, when capitalization does affect
meaning. You can specify that search words must have one or more capital letters, all capital letters,
or no capital letters, for example:
CAPS
searches for the specified word with at least one letter capitalized
caps (anchor)
ALLCAPS
searches for the specified word with all letters capitalized
allcaps (doe)
NOCAPS
searches for the specified word with no letters capitalized
nocaps (anchor)

The ECLIPSE feature
The FOCUS feature
The ECLIPSE feature is an electronic clipping service that
allows you to follow the development of topics of interest
to you. You can have the LexisNexis services at www.lexis.com
save and re-run searches for updates at daily, business daily,
weekly, or monthly intervals—automatically. You can view
ECLIPSE results online or have them e-mailed to you. Each
time your search runs, you retrieve only new documents, not
any that you’ve seen already.
The FOCUS feature lets you highlight words within the
documents in your search results, regardless of whether
those words were part of your original search request.
For no additional search charge:
™
Just click on the Save As ECLIPSE link, fill in a few blanks,
and click on the Save button.
™
➤ Highlight as many words as you like, without losing
or changing your original search request.
➤ Use the FOCUS feature within any level of a search
request or within a document retrieved through the

and saved—until 2:00 a.m. ET of the following day—
automatically. You can review any of your search

the screen.
