Large-scale energy production, storage and end-use test & demonstration projects to comfort the public at large and public authorities that «yes we can» already to-day. REIDS focus. __________________________________________________________________________ PV hourly & day to day variability The major challenge for broad and large-scale integration of PV and wind energy is system integration and energy storage. _________________________________________________________________________ Providing electricity to isolated communities remains one of the core challenges. The solution can only be by way of local micro-grids. REIDS micro-grid main application focus: Island systems Emergency situations Remote village systems Energy Research Institute @ NTU|ERI@N http://erian.ntu.edu.sg REIDS – UNECE – Nov 18, 2014 5 Targeted technologies Renewable Energy Generation Hybrid Micro-grid Energy sources/ Storage/Loads Solar Renewables - Solar PV - Solar Thermal Grid Connection Loads Marine Renewables Wind - In-stream Tidal Renewables - Small to Intermediate - Onshore & Offshore Hybrid Micro-grid - Remote Monitoring, Control - AC/DC Bio Energy - On Island Loads (residential, commercial, SME’s) - Connection to neighboring Islands - Desalination - H2 , Power to gas/fuels - ………. - Non-food crops - Algae Energy Storage Fuel Cell - H2, NG Diesel Gen - Diesel, Hybrid Micro-grid Energy sources/ Storage/Loads biodiesel - Batteries – Li-ion, Redox, Supercaps - Flywheel - Compressed Air Multi-renewable sources, multi-loads, multi-storage integration Energy Research Institute @ NTU|ERI@N http://erian.ntu.edu.sg REIDS – UNECE – Nov 18, 2014 3 Multitechnology demonstration REIDS: Fish Hatchery Solar PV • Solar PV Diesel Genset • Wind • Marine • Bioenergy • Energy storage • • • REIDS Microgrid Misc. Objectives - Test and demonstrate, at a large-scale level, the proper integration of a broad range of renewable energy production - onshore and offshore, energy storage and rational energy end-use technologies to provide for the supply of a wide palette of industrial, commercial and residential loads. - Provide an emblematic neutral setting research and development platform benefitting private and public sector entities in support of their on-going efforts, as required for prototyping, testing, large scale demonstration and eventually show-casing activities along the complex energy technology and product development cycle.
