Annual Report
The end of Alzheimer’s starts with us
Our vision is
a world
without
Alzheimer’s.

It’s personal
Dear friends,
As the remarkable families profiled in our 2013 Annual Report attest, Alzheimer’s is ultimately
a very personal disease, a challenge that millions of families grapple with each and every day.
And each of us was personally affected; we each had fathers who lived with Alzheimer’s.
All of these stories are representative of millions of other stories. Alzheimer’s is a family disease
and the Alzheimer’s Association is completely dedicated to supporting families who today are
living with the disease, while leading the global pursuit for meaningful treatments. As part
of the nation’s largest and most effective organization dedicated to Alzheimer’s support and
research, we are able to simultaneously act locally and globally.
In Massachusetts and New Hampshire, 142,000 families are living with Alzheimer’s. As you will
read in this report, we are both expanding the scope of our services and developing new and
innovative partnerships to provide meaningful support to people living with Alzheimer’s and their
care partners.
Thanks to the active support of thousands of volunteer advocates we have made important
advances with public policy in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and in Washington. We are
improving the quality of dementia care and expanding resources for research.
We are the movement to put an end to Alzheimer’s and we are growing. Through partnerships
with the TJX Companies, Inc., Dunkin’ Donuts, Rapid Refill, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
and many others, we are reaching out to employees, customers and the general public to spread
our message. Our Walks and other events are attracting tens of thousands of participants.
We are literally stepping out to achieve our vision of a World Without Alzheimer’s.
2013 was a record fundraising year. More and more donors have decided to make this cause
a priority. We need increased resources to support the growing numbers of families turning to
the Association and we need to expand the funds we can dedicate to research.
It all comes back to the personal. If you have lived through this disease, or if you know a family
living with Alzheimer’s, you understand the impact. We can’t sit back. We need the determination
and resilience to join with thousands of others to say clearly that Alzheimer’s disease must be a
top priority of our local community, our state and our nation.
Thank you for stepping up this year!

Highlights
As the leading voluntary health organization providing Alzheimer
care, support and research, we touch the lives of thousands of
people each year. Each connection is personal—it affects someone’s life in sometimes practical, sometimes profound ways. In
this Report, you can read the highlights of our past year. Numbers
alone do not show the depth of relationships that occurs as our
staff and volunteers interact with those whom we serve. We hope
that this report provides a sense of the true emotion of our work.
All that we do is made possible by our donors and supporters. Our
initiatives can be captured in three essential efforts: Care, Cause
and Cure. We encourage you to learn more about our ongoing and
new programs by visiting us at alz.org/MANH.

Care
24/7 Helpline
We responded to more
than 10,835 calls, providing
information, support and
guidance to individuals,
family members and
professional caregivers.
We also offer Helpline
online to increase
accessibility for those
who prefer to interact
via the internet.
Dementia Care
Coordination
We completed a pilot
program with Tufts
Health Plan, providing
coordination of services
and consultation, free of
charge, to their members
seeking assistance with
dementia. In addition, we
launched research-based
dementia care collaboration with three Boston
hospitals: Beth Israel
Deaconess Hospital,
Veterans Hospital, and
Boston Medical Center,
thanks to funding of the
Eisenberg Family Trust.
Care Consultation
Our individualized counseling program provided
more than 1,246 consultations at no charge.
Through Care Consultation sessions we provide
in-depth assistance
to families. We utilize
phone conferencing and
e-mail contact, when
appropriate, to make it
possible for those at a
distance to be involved
in family discussions.
Programs for
Individuals, Families
and the Community
We reached 14,899
people with support,
information and education
at our scheduled programs
and community events.
We translated and
presented key education
programs into Spanish
and Portuguese to
expand our reach into
diverse communities.
More than 200 people
attended our annual
African American Forum
in Boston. In New
Hampshire, our annual
Care to Cure conference
on caregiving and
research informed 200
families and professional
caregivers on best
practices as well as the
Alzheimer research
landscape.
Programs for
Professionals
More than 3,600 professionals participated in
our 110 workshops, programs or conferences.
Our Habilitation Training
program “Caring for
People with Alzheimer’s
Disease” is the leading
model of dementia care
training—we trained
360 health professionals
this year.
Alzheimer’s Early
Detection Alliance
Early-Stage
Engagement
Our national model for
corporate collaboration,
AEDA benefits employees
of participating members.
We now have 65 corporate AEDA members
in our region for whom
we delivered workplace
education programs and
attended workplace
health fairs. Member
corporations include
The TJX Companies, Inc.,
State Street Corporation,
Tufts Health Plan, Sun
Life and EMC. New to
the program is the
Commonwealth of
Massachusetts with its
40,000 employees.
A grant from MetLife
enabled us to pilot an
early-stage engagement
program for those
recently diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s or a related
dementia. We offered a
variety of engagement
programs including art
discussion, yoga, nutrition, and a walking club.
Support Groups
We offered 225 mostly
volunteer led support
groups, providing training
and support to the
leaders. We also offered
specialized groups for
those with youngeronset Alzheimer’s (a
more rare variation,
occurring before age
65); children of a parent
with younger-onset; a
telephone-based group
for individuals who are
not able to leave their
home or live in remote
locations; a mindfulness
support group; and a
short-term telephone
group for those with
younger-onset Alzheimer’s.
Physician Outreach
We significantly
escalated our outreach
to physicians as a crucial
building block to improving the rate of diagnosis
of Alzheimer’s from its
current low of 50 percent.
We conducted outreach
to more than 9,800
clinicians, including 640
neurologists, 298 geriatricians, 2,800 primary
care physicians and
more than 6,000 allied
health professionals—
representing a 156%
increase over the previous
year.

Legislative Initiatives
Our public policy agenda
comprises proposed
legislation to create
dementia-capable care
in acute care settings;
proposed uniform
guardianship that will
permit guardianship to
be recognized across
state borders; the
Massachusetts Alzheimer
Project Act to create a
permanent office in the
state government; and
proposed New Hampshire
State Alzheimer Plan to
provide a roadmap and
coordination for dementia
services.
Advocates in Action
Our Massachusetts
Alzheimer’s Advocacy
Action Day at the state
house in Boston galvanized advocates to
promote our public policy
agenda. Advocates from
New Hampshire and
Massachusetts also
travelled to Washington,
D.C. to meet with their
elected officials as part
of the annual Public Policy
Summit. Nationally, our
advocates were responsible for securing support
of increased Alzheimer’s
research funding at the
National Institutes of
Health.
Massachusetts
State Plan
Walk to End
Alzheimer’s® 2012
Working with the
Executive Office of Elder
Affairs (EOEA) we created
task forces to bring to
life the Massachusetts
State Plan accepted by
Governor Patrick Deval in
2011. Focus areas include
dementia care training
for health providers and
public safety for those
with dementia.
In the Fall of 2012,
a record-breaking
20,000 people across
Massachusetts and
New Hampshire participated in the Alzheimer’s
Association’s Walk to
End Alzheimer’s program,
the nation’s largest
effort to raise public
awareness and funds for
Alzheimer’s care, support
and research. In 2012,
$2.6 million was raised
by the dedicated Walkers
and sponsors of the
Alzheimer’s Association
MA/NH Chapter.
Community
Awareness Building
We increased Alzheimer
awareness in diverse
communities by creating
Diversity Councils in
Springfield, Worcester
and Fall River—to guide
our planning around
programs and outreach.
A Purple Sunday at 36
churches in Boston and
Springfield reached more
than 1,500 people.
The national Alzheimer’s
Association Public Policy
Summit brought more
than 1,000 advocates to
Washington, D.C., this
year including a contingent of more than 30 from
Massachusetts and New
Hampshire. Shao Hsien,
Andy Wojcikowski, John
O’Leary, Linda Howrey, and
Alan Holbrook (l.-r.) met
with Congressman Jim
McGovern (2nd District) and
our other elected officials
to ask for increased funding
for Alzheimer’s research.

Media
AlzTogether
Our work with The Boston
Globe on the overuse and
abuse of antipsychotic
medications in nursing
homes resulted in new
proposed legislation
to monitor and reduce
off-label use of the
medications. Overall,
we garnered more than
128 million media impressions, an increase
of 27% over 2011. A
new collaboration with
FOX25-TV played a key
role as they joined us as
a media sponsor of our
new RUN TRI RIDE to
End Alzheimer’s program.
Our young leadership
group, AlzTogether,
expanded its membership in 2012 and stayed
focused on their goal of
increasing awareness
of Alzheimer’s disease
and the Alzheimer’s
Association to young
adults between the ages
of twenty-one and forty.
The group organized a
series of public awareness and fundraising
events geared towards
young adults, including
a “Night of Light” event,
where the top of the
Prudential Tower was
turned purple in support
of the Alzheimer’s cause.
The group also launched
its first annual Blondes
vs. Brunettes flag-football
game, which raised over
$50,000 in support of the
Alzheimer’s Association’s
mission.
Purple with a Purpose
Public Awareness
For World Alzheimer’s
Day 2012, we teamed
up once more with
Dunkin’ Donuts. Nearly
1,000 Dunkin’ stores in
eastern Massachusetts
and southern New
Hampshire offered a
special purple-sprinkled
donut to raise money
and awareness and they
also distributed 110,000
Alzheimer brochures.
Food for Thought
Cause Marketing
Top Boston area chefs
joined together to raise
funds and awareness.
Celebrated chefs
participated in a photo/
video shoot, with the
resulting images used
in social media; and then
for a week in September
offered a special appetizer with 100% of the
proceeds donated to the
cause.
As we seek to engage
a broader audience
and raise awareness
of the need to increase
research funding, we
are expanding our cause
marketing initiatives.
During the past year, we
continued a successful
donation program with
Rapid Refill service
stations in eastern
Massachusetts. We also
continued a relationship
with a micro-brewery,
White Birch Beer, in
New Hampshire for a
time-limited special brew
called “Unforgettable”
that generated a
donation to our RIDE
to End Alzheimer’s.
We benefitted as well
from a national donation
program by Subaru.
A March donation
campaign by Marshalls
stores contributed to our
national mission fund.

Joyce and Dan
Kevin, Eileen, and Anne
The Botti family
Massachusetts
Joyce and Dan go back to their college days. They met through friends and have been
married for 37 years. She went on to earn a teaching degree and he became an
automotive consultant. Her first 11 years as a teacher were spent at the elementary
school level in New York. After they relocated to Massachusetts, she transitioned
to teaching Spanish which she taught for another 11 years.
Joyce was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s just over a year ago at
age 59. The signs were there as she wrote on the board at school and she would
write the last letter of a word, erase it and start it over again. A handle confused
her…was she supposed to push, or pull it? She left the car running outside the
house for two hours. She had trouble with the numbers on students’ exams. And
she would stop for her morning coffee at a drive-though, and leave without the
coffee. The signs worried Joyce enough that she asked her primary care physician
for the name of a neurologist—but she carried the name around for a year, not
wanting to make the call.
“We saw that something was wrong” Dan said.
Talking about Alzheimer’s now, Joyce and Dan have the slight cushion
of time, but when he first heard the diagnosis there was shock. Telling
their three children was not easy.
Joyce wanted to share the news with each of her children separately.
So Kevin, Eileen and Anne, all in their early 30s, heard the news one
after another on one very long day. It changed things forever for their
family.
We thank those who
opened their homes
to us so that the story
of Alzheimer’s could
be told.

The three adult children sat around the dining room table in the family home to
talk about their journey so far. The warm yellow walls and piano off to the side all
tell a story of a family life that gave comfort and made sense. Their mother took
care of herself, running regularly. She was a model of healthy lifestyle.
“It was a weekend when we were all up for a visit,” said Kevin who now lives in
Brooklyn. “I didn’t know it was an issue and was taken aback. We talked about
it.” Since that day, Kevin stays in touch more; he reads the articles his mother
frequently forwards to him. He’s wearing a purple “EndAlz” cause bracelet.
I don’t have time to fear for myself
The Botti family | 11
as much as I do for mom and dad
“There’s no way we can keep up with it all,” said Anne who lives the nearest and has
two children of her own. “We do keep up-to-date with what we can do to help. I had
some difficulty with the news at first because I see her often. I asked are you sure?”
“I found myself looking for more information, but there’s little on this phenomenon
of younger-onset Alzheimer’s,” said Eileen who also lives in Brooklyn. Eileen did find
and read the Shriver Report, by Maria Shriver, which details the impact of Alzheimer’s
on women.
Eileen had more firsthand experience but that hasn’t made her mother’s diagnosis
any easier.
“I worked for a year on an Alzheimer’s floor; there was always a fear for my grandparents but I didn’t expect to have it with the younger generation, with my parent,”
said Eileen.
Are they worried that they too might face a similar diagnosis some day?
“I don’t have time to fear for myself as much as I do for mom and dad five years
ahead,” said Anne.
Sharing her story with her children was just the beginning for Joyce.
“I got my hands on everything I could read,” she said. “I looked up support groups
and found one through the Association run by Peter Ham” (Peter has since become
the Vice President of Programs & Services at the Massachusetts/New Hampshire
Chapter). Those visits to support groups were difficult because Joyce was so early
in the disease process and she was seeing what was down the road for her. Dan did
not attend; Joyce was glad that he wasn’t there.
“I kept going to support group because there’s always something you can glean.”
When she heard about the South Shore Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which was also
on her birthday in 2012, she asked her children to get involved with her. The act of
doing something motivated them all. Unfortunately in 2012, the South Shore Walk in
Plymouth experienced torrential rain. Kevin and his girlfriend still went; the rest of
the family sent in their donations and stayed dry. They signed up again in 2013 and
had perfect weather.
Joyce also signed up, with Dan, to attend the national Public Policy Forum in
Washington, D.C. this year. Along with more than 1,000 others, they heard speakers
talk about the impact of Alzheimer’s on our country. They also met face-to-face with
their congressman, Representative Bill Keating, to enlist his support for the cause.
“When they showed the facts and figures video, with the different amounts allocated
for research for different disease, I was shocked,” Joyce said. Alzheimer’s is not the
first major disease to hit the Botti family. Kevin had lymphoma at the age of 29.
“Kevin is fine now, but I have to tell him that I have something that can’t be cured,”
Joyce said.
12 | The Botti family
five years ahead.
Though there is no cure, Joyce is living life as fully as she knows how. She is involved in
activities through the Association and was recently named to the national Alzheimer’s
Association Early Stage Advisory Board and to the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts/
New Hampshire Chapter. She volunteers with elder services and takes care of her
grandchildren two days a week.
“They say do everything you can do—get together with friends,” said Dan. “She has a
social core of friends, and they know about her diagnosis.” He has not yet shared her
diagnosis with his work colleagues, though he sees that happening in the future. “If it
becomes in the way of my work, I’ll need to explain.”
They are early in the course of the disease. Joyce still drives. She runs a couple of miles
every day and does aerobic exercise. She’s joined a new support group. They are thinking
about downsizing from their large colonial home. Tackling her diagnosis head-on has
become an important part of her life.
“I am happy to be able to change the face of the disease,” Joyce said.

Corporate Support
The TJX Companies, Inc.
In February 2013, The TJX Companies, Inc., headquartered in Framingham,
Massachusetts, announced a multi-year pledge of $1 million in recognition of
the massive impact of Alzheimer’s disease worldwide. This pledge was the
second $1 million gift from TJX, which it has made on behalf of its Associates
and retail divisions that include T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and Sierra
Trading Post in the U.S.; Winners, HomeSense and Marshalls in Canada, and
TK Maxx and HomeSense in Europe. As part of the pledge, TJX also became
a Presenting Sponsor of the Promise Garden, which serves as the emotional
centerpiece of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s events around the country.
Carol Meyrowitz, TJX’s Chief Executive Officer, said, “I am so pleased that
TJX’s support of the Alzheimer’s Association will continue as the Association
strives to fulfill its vision of a world without Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s painfully
affects millions of people, not only those who suffer from the disease, but their
families and caregivers as well. It has been over two years since we announced
our global partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association and during that time,
so many of our Associates have taken the time to share their personal stories
with me. We are optimistic that other companies will join us in our support of
this important cause and that fewer people will suffer from the impact of this
terminal disease.”
Since making its initial pledge, TJX has become a Champion of the Alzheimer’s
Early Detection Alliance, helping to foster awareness about the disease and
spread recognition of the early warning signs. To that end, Ms. Meyrowitz hosted
an Alzheimer’s Early Detection Alliance event in 2012 in which executives from
over 45 companies convened to learn more about the disease and how the
business community can marshal its resources to build awareness.
TJX Associates also back our cause. Associates regularly support the Walk to
End Alzheimer’s and in 2012, a group of over 400 TJX Associates signed up to
participate in the Walk, fielding over 30 teams across the country and collectively
raising thousands of dollars for our cause. In 2013, Marshalls store Associates
in the U.S. conducted a “Give a Dollar” campaign, which allowed customers to
make a donation in support of the Alzheimer’s Association upon checkout.
In addition to TJX’s support of the Alzheimer’s Association nationally, the
Company has been a good neighbor here in Massachusetts as well. Since 2010,
TJX has illuminated its corporate headquarters buildings – located right off
the Mass Turnpike – in purple lights during the month of September to raise
awareness for World Alzheimer’s month. The Company also hosts lunch’n’learn
sessions to educate its Associates on detection and caregiver-related topics.
14 | Corporate Support
Our Chapter honored TJX for its dedication and contribution to our cause at our
inaugural Hope on the Harbor celebration in June 2013, and we are pleased to
be featuring TJX in our 2013 Corporate Sponsor Profile.

Teams and individual riders made our RIDE to End Alzheimer’s (formerly Memory Ride) a huge success in 2012—with
400 participants riding routes between 30 and 100 miles through central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire for a
challenging and exhilarating day. The “Live Free or Die” team, hailing from New Hampshire was in high spirits before taking
to the road. (Photo by B. Fitzgerald-Campbell)

28 | Suzanne Lissy
Suzanne
Suzanne Lissy’s life has been shaped by Alzheimer’s. Originally a marketing major,
she took a new direction and earned a degree in occupational therapy from Boston
University.
”My grandmother had dementia and it made me think about the other side of world
from marketing. I loved the combination of medical and psychiatric issues,” she said.
Suzanne took a job at Spaulding Rehab, followed by one at Wingate-Needham. At that
time, she had a career that was meaningful; she also became the mother of twin girls.
By then, her father had already been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
“Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at 65. He was living in New York, on Long
Island, and I felt helpless. I was working and could not go back and forth to help.”
As her twin daughters, Julia and Sarah, turned 2 ½, she found a new calling. She
trained as a volunteer counselor on the Association’s 24/7 Helpline and began working
a weekly shift, helping people navigate the challenges of Alzheimer’s and dementia.
“It was a perfect fit. And I also used the Association to help my mother out, to get her
help. But Helpline was more for me to be able to help others—I felt helpless with my
own father.”
Helpline for Suzanne, as it does for all the counselors, brought a wide range of experiences.
“I didn’t know what it would be like, but I was getting an array of calls Some made me
cry. Some made me angry. The hardest ones were family members looking for an easy
way out. It was frustrating because I knew that some people with Alzheimer’s weren’t
going to get the care they needed.”
Though her experience as an occupational therapist prepared her somewhat, Suzanne
found that volunteering was emotionally hard.
“There are no easy answers with Alzheimer’s. All the calls were hard in their own way.”
I was getting an array of calls.
Some made me cry.
Suzanne Lissy | 29
For five years, Suzanne volunteered at the 24/7 Helpline, assisting the Association
staff at the Watertown headquarters. And her own family’s story was not unlike
those she heard while she was helping others.
Though her father, Don Schulman, was diagnosed at 65, the disease had taken hold
earlier. A high-performer who ran his own company, he had managed to hide the early
signs from the family. Car accidents were written off, as were times when he became
lost. By the time he was tested, Suzanne’s father was in mid-stage Alzheimer’s.
He remained at that stage for two-three years but then went downhill quickly.
In perfect health, except for Alzheimer’s, Suzanne’s father lost his ability to walk,
then speak, over a five-year period. For the full course of the disease, he was cared
for at home with the assistance of professional caregivers.
“My mother was alone. Even though she was not widowed, it was just very hard.
Every stage was hard.”
And it was all made harder because the family did not tell others about the diagnosis.
“We told nobody. I was crying every day and had no place to go—because of the
stigma. When I let go of that, it changed everything. When we began to tell people,
they said oh that makes sense. You tell people it’s the disease, not your loved one—
then they can understand.”
“My biggest loss is that my father missed out on that whole next phase of our lives.
He missed seeing me become a mother, he a grandfather.” In a twist of irony, her
son Dylan was born on her father’s birthday, four months after his passing.
“Alzheimer’s changed our whole dynamic. We were close, and then he was gone.”
She has turned her loss into a personal campaign to make a difference. First with
Helpline, then being named to the Chapter’s Leadership Council, and then joining the
Board of Directors. She also joined the Night at the Pops committee, helping for many
years to raise money and awareness through that special event.
From her summer home on the Cape and year-round home in Needham she works the
phone, bringing others into cause. The “Don Schulman Forget-Me-Nots” are at the
Greater Boston Walk each year, honoring her father and fighting back at the disease
that took so much from Suzanne and her family.
Suzanne has become a resource to friends to are dealing with Alzheimer’s in their
own families.
Some made me angry. The hardest ones
30 | Suzanne Lissy
“Whenever I hear that someone has it, it pulls a heartstring. Alzheimer’s is unique
because the family gets hit as hard or harder.” Her years as a Helpline counselor
have made her an advocate for managing the disease, with help. Her own family
had the resources for a full-time companion and at-home care. She knows that is
not the case for most, so she offers her own checklist:
Stay

time and money and get involved.
Suzanne’s own commitment echoes through her family. Her husband of 22 years,
David, is at her side at Alzheimer’s Association events like Hope on the Harbor. Her
sister has organized a Walk team as well. And her daughters, who have grown up
with their mother’s dedication, arranged for the Association to benefit from a
school fundraiser.
“The Board is definitely a priority for me. I think I can make a difference as a
family member. It seems like the right thing to do.”
Her hope: “I wish we could just get to the point where people could live with it.”
were people looking for an easy way out.

related dementias receive the best care possible. Advocates gather in February at the Boston State House to bring that
message to legislators.

Meg and Judy
Judy Young and Meg Chalmers have been together more than three decades and
married for six years. Together, they are experts in a number of fields of endeavor—
most recently, unfortunately, they have added Alzheimer’s to their experiences.
Meg (Margaret) Chalmers earned a five year nursing degree from Columbia University
and then went on to earn a Masters and EdD. Her plan was to teach nursing. Her last
teaching job was in the Berkshires, teaching LPN students at a community college;
she went on to serve as director of nursing at a Lennox Life Care Community and
part-time nurse coordinator at Jacob’s Pillow dance festival.
Judy Young and
Meg Chalmers
New Hampshire
Judy L. Young is an RN who earned a MSCS with a clinical specialty in psychiatric
nursing and is trained to treat and prescribe for psychiatric conditions. She met Meg
in New York City where they were both involved in a public health outreach program.
Once in the Berkshires, she worked in community mental health and a program for
suicidal borderline women.
Then they up and changed direction. They had owned a summer house on Cape Cod.
In their early 50s, they relocated to the Cape and began a second career in the
antiques business. They specialized in Mission Period furniture, but then fell in love
with a Boston Arts and Crafts Period school of pottery called Saturday Evening Girls.
A training program for young immigrant girls, the program produced works of art now
sought out by collectors. They were a great team.
“Meg was a phenomenal salesperson and she was the happy person that they got
a hug from,” Judy said. Judy’s sales acumen and Meg’s hugs resulted in $4 million in
pottery sales over the years.
Visiting with them at their home on a pond in New Hampshire, the first order of business
is a quick viewing of some of their favorite pottery pieces. They have downsized
considerably, but favorites, all small, reside on shelves around their cozy cottage.
With nature themes, farm animals, and some with pithy sayings, the pieces are like
the two women themselves—direct and full of a natural, shining energy.
“At first, it was like an addiction. We found out that we could buy things and then sell
them at a profit,” said Meg with a smile. “It was like a miracle.”
48 | Judy Young and Meg Chalmers
That miracle rolled on as they traveled around the country, buying and selling at
antiques fairs and shows. From Florida to California, they did up to twenty highend shows a year.
“It was exhausting but energizing,” said Judy. They built a website, courtesy of
Meg’s computer skills. Before long, they were invited by Schiffler publishing to

write a definitive collector’s book. In 2005, Schiffler published The Saturday
Evening Girls: Paul Revere Pottery—which has pride of place now on a coffee
table in their living room.
Then the changes began. Meg was having trouble remembering things.
A computer expert with a mind for science, she began to realize that something
was wrong. Tested once by her primary care physician, then again four months
later by another, she was overwhelmed. A CT-scan showed only age-related
changes in her brain. A psychiatrist wanted to rule out clinical depression, but
no mood disorders were evident. Then finally after neuropsychological tests,
came a diagnosis.
She understood and could help.
50 | Judy Young and Meg Chalmers
“The doctor saw us together for five minutes—he said it was early Alzheimer’s
and we were totally shocked,” said Judy. Meg went on Aricept, which can be
useful in the early stages of dementia. That was May 2012. Meg was 73.
“The only good thing they said was to contact the Alzheimer’s Association,” said
Meg. She and Judy set up a care consultation with Ronda Randazzo from the
Association’s Bedford, New Hampshire office. “She was somebody who understood
what it meant to me, to Judy. “She understood and could help.”
The two women who have managed two successful careers both become somber
when talking about life now. When they closed down their antiques business, they
had moved to their dream house on the pond in New Hampshire and had changes
made to create the perfect retirement spot. A picture window at the foot of their
bed looks out across still, placid water. They kayak when weather permits; they have
two families of ducks that live beneath their back porch. They have a second home
in Florida so that they can escape the cold winters. It was all supposed to be perfect.
We are going to
live life fully and
in the moment.
“I have to ask questions a lot. I try to keep active, but it’s sad.” Meg became
quieter as she talked about life now.
“Meg is proactive and she has a lot of cognitive reserve,” Judy said. “But she is
very aware of her losses, which is difficult. We are both grieving.”
“We used to take care of Alzheimer patients and would see people at the end
stage. That’s what I would think about and it’s hard,” Meg said. Both her mother
and an uncle also died with Alzheimer’s,
Less than a year after the diagnosis, Judy and Meg decided to attend the
Association’s national Public Policy Forum in Washington, D.C. With more than
1,000 other advocates, they took to Capitol Hill to tell the story of their experience, hoping to convince legislators to back additional funding for Alzheimer
research. Judy has also joined a telephone support group that the Association
runs for those who are unable to find a local group to attend or are unable to
leave their house because of caregiving or other restrictions.
“I feel strongly that there needs to be more support groups and activities for
people in the early stage of the disease,” said Meg.
“We’re 1 ¾ hours from anywhere,” Judy said. “But every little thing we do with
the Alzheimer’s Association gives us a little bit of something.” They also took part
in the Manchester Walk to End Alzheimer’s this September.
“We feel like it’s not fair—but it never is,” said Judy. “We are going to live life
fully and in the moment. Our motto is don’t postpone joy.”
For this moment, life on a pond with ducklings is good.

RUN TRI RIDE to
End Alzheimer’s
RUN TRI RIDE to End Alzheimer’s comprises running, cycling and triathlon events throughout the year to raise
awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. From the legendary Boston Marathon® to the
rigors of the Reach the Beach Relay and the famous RIDE to End Alzheimer’s, the RUN TRI RIDE team has raised
more than $800,000 to fight Alzheimer’s disease.
RIDE to End Alzheimer’s
The RIDE to End Alzheimer’s was established in 1997 by
the Noonan Family to raise funds for Alzheimer’s research.
Over the past 17 years, the RIDE has raised more than
$3 million to fund research through the Alzheimer’s
Association global research grants program. In 2012,
400 dedicated cyclists traversed the rolling hills of
Massachusetts and New Hampshire, raising more than
$400,000 for research. We are grateful to the cyclists,
corporate sponsors and volunteers who worked together
to make 2012 a successful year. Highlighted are the top
fundraising cyclists and teams.
The RIDE to End Alzheimer’s, raising critical funds for
research, continues to grow as one of New England’s main
charity rides. In 2012, FOX25-TV joined as a media sponsor
actively promoting and helping grow the RIDE. Families
come together at the RIDE, and this team is no different:
the Vincent family, riding in honor of Bruce Vincent who has
younger-onset Alzheimer’s. (Photo by B. Fitzgerald-Campbell)

the Boston Marathon as a way to promote awareness and raise money for
the cause. Now a year-round and part of our RUN TRI RIDE program, RUN
has raised more than $2.5 million since its inception. We partner with the
B.A.A. Boston Marathon®, New Balance Reach the Beach Relay Series,
Max Performance Triathlon Series, Boston’s Run to Remember and the New
Balance Falmouth Road Race. We are grateful to our event partners and
the more than 400 athletes who participated and raised close to $400,000

The Longest Day
Held on the summer solstice, The Longest Day is a sunrise-to-sunset team event honoring the strength, passion and
endurance of those facing Alzheimer’s disease. Teams complete approximately 16 hours of activity to raise awareness
and funds for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. Below are a list of participants
and teams who played bridge, hiked mountains, biked across Massachusetts and much more in support of those with
Alzheimer’s disease and their care partners.

Hope on the Harbor
June 2012, we launched our new signature event, Hope on the Harbor, an Alzheimer’s
Association Celebration, with honorary chairs The Honorable Thomas M. Menino, Mayor
of Boston and Carol Meyrowitz, Chief Executive Officer, The TJX Companies, Inc. Thanks
to our Executive Advisory Committee, sponsors and guests, Hope on the Harbor realized
$650,000 to support Alzheimer’s research and programs. Held at the John Joseph Moakley
Courthouse on Boston’s waterfront, Hope on the Harbor honored The Shriver Family and
The TJX Companies, Inc. for their commitment to make a difference in the lives of those
affected by Alzheimer’s.
