January 3, 2016 Page 2 PASTOR’S COLUMN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I saw this reflection in Bringing Home the Word published by Liguori Publication and wanted to share it with you. Unexpected Gifts Several years ago, our family’s longtime neighbor died. She had no children. My mom had helped her in her later years, so we weren’t surprised when she received some money from the estate. What was truly surprising, though, was that a check arrived at my house as well. I hadn’t done anything to deserve this money; I had always been polite and kind to our neighbor and had visited her sometimes, but I was shocked at her unwarranted generosity. Without knowing it, I had become an heir to this lovely woman. On this Solemnity of the Epiphany, we celebrate our own unexpected inheritance – the quite undeserved gift of Jesus. Saint Paul writes that the Gentiles are “coheirs” to this great gift, but what have we done to deserve such grace? Our culture constantly tells us how much we “deserve” – you’ve worked hard, so treat yourself to a new outfit, a giant bowl of ice cream, an expensive car. But in the simplest of places – the tiniest of towns, this little hamlet of Bethlehem – comes a gift we could never do enough to deserve. The magi recognized this – they prostrated themselves in homage and were changed by their encounter with Jesus. They “went home a different way” – not just physically, but spiritually. Now that the Christmas season is winding down and the long-awaited gifts have been unwrapped and put away, maybe we can look at the gift of Jesus with Epiphany eyes. May we welcome Jesus today like an unexpected inheritance check in our mailbox – with delighted hearts, humble spirits and grateful souls. As we begin 2016, let us remember what Stephen Covey said: "Begin with the end in mind." I wish we truly "begin with the end in mind" by reminding ourselves what we, as a church, are all about: "OLPH with the HEART." Let me share with you what this means to guide us as we begin the new year. O is One. We, as a church, are one. Differences, conflicts, problems, and disappointments should never divide us. And everything we say and do should unite us. L is Lord, Lady, and Love. We will never survive without the "Lord" so we always pray to him and come to church every Sunday. "Lady" since we are named after "Our Lady of Perpetual Help." We are a "Marian Church" so let's promote this powerful devotion to the Mother of Jesus who is our "Perpetual Help." "Love" should be in everything we do. Even in the littlest of things we do as we serve others. P is People of God. That is "everyone." Regardless. No one is set aside or discriminated against. You are the reason why we, your servants, are here. It's all about you. H is Help. We are here to serve you. It's not the other way around. H is also "Happily." To serve you cheerfully. Smilingly. H is Home. Let us be a "Welcoming Church." Let's make each person who visits us feel that this is truly his home "where all are welcome." E is Eucharist. Eucharist reminds us of the "sacrifice" of Jesus. We need to make some "sacrifice" in order for us to be a "serving church." And sacrifice is all about giving generously, sharing our time, treasure, and talent. A is "A" level of service. The "gold standard". Let's be an "A Team" who will always do our best serving TOGETHER" the People of God. R is Relationship. At the end of the day, it's all about relationship. It's people more than anything else. T is Team. Let's work and serve together as a team guided by this philosophy "OLPH with the HEART." More Divine Mercy at OLPH In observance of "The Jubilee Year of Mercy", we will be extending our Saturday confession times. Starting January 16, confession time will start at 3 pm, "The Hour of Great Mercy" till 4:30 pm. We are also so very blessed to have a very beautiful image of The Divine Mercy inside our beautiful church to remind us and to inspire us in our prayer. Thank you so very much to Louise Niewiarowski and her family who donated to us this lovely image. Thanks to Mike Baumann, Dennis Rogers, Lalo Vasquez and everyone else who worked together to put our Lord on the wall. Finally, thanks to John Saavedra who, inspired by the Holy Spirit, has suggested to us that very beautiful spot for the image. Now, we both have The Divine Mercy and Our Lady of Guadalupe in our church. What great blessings this 2016! God Bless you all. "When you are kind to others, it not only changes you. It changes the world." - Rabbi Harold Kushner “ LPH with a HEART” Fr. Joseph January 3, 2016 Page 4 FAITH BUILDING NEWLYWEDS 101 This is the season during which we become our better selves. Peace reigns in our hearts while we exchange gifts and pleasant thoughts. The best gift we can offer the King of Peace, however, is to be peacemakers throughout the year. WHAT IS IT? Newlyweds 101: A God Centric Enrichment Program is a 6-session program designed to help newly married couples adjust to their new lives together. Bring harmony. It isn’t enough to avoid conflict. Peacemaking means admitting wrongdoing and accepting responsibility immediately. Peacemakers give up ground even if they are entitled to it. Allow small things to remain small. It can be easy to find opportunities to take offense or find others in the wrong. Peacemakers don’t accept every opportunity they are offered for a fight. Catch others at their best. Gratitude and graciousness are the best remedies for conflict and anxiety. Share respect freely. Bring goodwill to every situation. WHO IS IT FOR? Catholic couples married for 5 years or less. WHEN AND WHERE IS IT? One Friday a month January 22 February 26 HOW DO YOU SIGN UP? March 18 Register by emailing: April 22 newlyweds101@gmail.com May 20 Suggested donation: $20 (at door) June 24 St. Basil Church, 637 S. Kingsley Dr. Los Angeles, CA 90005 You’ll certainly get the most out of the program by attending all the sessions, but you may join at any time. Snacks and Drinks will be provided. Watch for opportunities to spread peace. Daily you will face situations in which you will have to make a choice, take a stand, defend a position, or seek a peaceful resolution. Be prepared to be a peacemaker even when it won’t be popular, pleasant or easy. SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN THE IMPORTANT IMPACT OF FATHERS AND FATHER FIGURES ON CHILDREN Whether you’ve seen a child light up when you encourage them, succeed with a little bit of mentoring, or problem solve after lending your listening ear, it is clear that fathers and father figures are a gift in the life of children. While nothing can replace the presence of a father, many of us know from experience the influence that other trusted adults can have on the life of children. Children thrive when they have adults that they can trust and learn from. For complete VIRTUS® Article email: jvienna@la-archdiocese.org. Delight Gold Myrrh 3 de enero, 2016 Página 6 MINISTERIO HISPANO Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo, Vi esta reflexión en Bringing Home the Word publicada por Ligouri Publications y quiero compartirla con ustedes. REGALOS INESPERADOS Hace varios años, una vecina de la familia de mucho tiempo, falleció. Ella no tenía hijos. Registering at OLPH A great New Year’s Resolution for 2016 would be to register as a parishioner at OLPH. Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. To so clearly state your Catholic commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things easier when it is time for an infant baptism, school registration, wedding, or when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for baptismal and confirmation sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member in our parish. How do you know if you are already registered? A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings. So are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering. Registration forms are available at the Rectory office or you can download one from our website, www.olphdowney.org 2.
