Deadlines
1. The OUAC must receive the Teacher Education
application by December 1, 2015.
The OUAC must receive the Teacher Education
Application Service fee, the York supplementary
$100 non‑refundable service fee and appropriate
transcript fees by December 8, 2015, if paying by
electronic payment (for online applications).
2. Official transcripts are required for all
postsecondary institutions you attend. Official
transcripts for Ontario universities must be
ordered using the online Transcript Request
Form (TRF) within the TEAS application. All other
transcripts ordered directly from postsecondary
institutions must arrive at York University by
December 1, 2015.
If you have foreign academic documents from
outside Canada and the United States, you
must submit official transcripts translated and
evaluated by World Education Services (WES).

Application and Supporting Information Forms
must be completed and received by the Faculty

Supplementary Application Form will not be
mailed. After the TEAS application is received,
you will be instructed by email to go online to
obtain and submit the Supplementary Application
Form and online Letters of Recommendation,

Internationally Educated Teachers (IET)
If you are an internationally trained teacher
and are a Canadian immigrant, contact the
Ontario College of Teachers to find out the
requirements to be certified to teach in Ontario:
www.oct.ca/IET/. If individual courses are required,
please apply as a Special Student to request
enrollment in one or two Education courses. For
more information, contact the Faculty of Education,
BEd Student Services. Those who must complete the
entire Bachelor of Education (BEd) program at York
University will be considered for admission under
regular admission procedures.
General Consecutive Notes
Admission to York University’s Faculty of Education
Consecutive Teacher Education Program is a
competitive process for limited spaces. The
Consecutive BEd program includes the following
features:
• Duration of four academic terms, from September
to April each year.
• 10 full academic courses (60 credits).
• One community-based placement and three
practicum placements, under the mentorship of
an Ontario certified teacher.
• Option of applying to an off-campus location.
The Bachelor of Education program is designed to
enable you to gain insights into the art of teaching
through integrating theory, knowledge and skills.

Admission and Degree Requirements
To be considered, you must hold an approved
undergraduate degree from an accredited
degree‑granting institution, conferred no later than
August 1, 2016, and must present an overall grade
point average of at least a “B” average based on the
final two years of full‑time study in an undergraduate
degree program (not including college transfer
credits). You must hold, or be in the process of
completing, an “acceptable postsecondary degree”,
as defined by the Ontario College of Teachers (Ontario
Regulation 184/97). If you hold a degree from another
country, please refer to the “Transcripts” section
in York University’s Faculty of Education online
Admission Information Package for further details
about acceptable degrees. An approved degree
program must include at least 15 full‑year courses
beyond high school graduation. If you are currently
completing your final year of an undergraduate
degree, assessment of academic qualifications will
be calculated as of December 1, 2015. Fulfilling the
minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
Teaching Levels
You may only select one choice to York’s BEd program.
The choices are Primary/Junior, Junior/Intermediate,
Intermediate/Senior or Technological Education.
Prerequisites for Teaching Subjects
Y10 Primary/Junior
You do not select teaching subjects. You may be
given preference if you completed one full‑year
course or equivalent in English, and one full‑year
course or equivalent in a curriculum subject area (e.g.,
Science, Fine Arts, History, Geography, Mathematics,
Kinesiology).

courses or equivalent in the teaching subject selected.
Applicants will only be considered for admission if
they have successfully completed a minimum of two
full‑year university courses, or equivalent, with at least
a “B” average for the selected teaching subjects by
the December 1, 2015, deadline. If there is more than
the required number of courses, the average will be
calculated using the highest grades.
Dance: You must have four full‑year (or equivalent)
undergraduate courses in the teaching subject, with at
least two of these being studio courses. An alternative
to this requirement is an acceptable degree with
at least two full‑year (or equivalent) courses in the
teaching subject as well as five or more years of
extensive training and professional experience in the
field.
Dramatic Arts: You must have four full‑year (or
equivalent) undergraduate courses in the teaching
subject, with at least two of these being studio
courses. An alternative to this requirement is an
acceptable degree with at least two full‑year (or
equivalent) courses in the teaching subject and five
or more years of extensive training and professional
experience in the field.
English: You must have completed at least three
full‑year (or equivalent) courses spanning three of
the following subject areas: Shakespeare; Canadian
Literature; Postcolonial Literature; Gender Studies;
and Language and Writing.
Geography: A course in “Introduction to
Geoinformatics” (or its equivalent) is recommended.
Health and Physical Education: You must have four
practicum (PKIN) activity courses from six core areas:
aquatics, team sports, individual and dual sports,
dance/gymnastics, track and field, and emergency
care.
History: You must have at least one full‑year (or
equivalent) Canadian History course. You will also
be given preference if other history courses reflect
the diverse nature of society. We would recommend
social history courses (involving themes such as race,
gender, ethnicity and class), and courses reflecting
the histories of non‑western nations.

Mathematics: You must have completed three full‑year
(or equivalent) courses spanning all of the following
subject areas: calculus; linear algebra; probability and
statistics; and proof‑based mathematics. Statistics
courses taken in other subject areas (e.g., psychology
or sociology) may only account for a maximum of one
half course toward the teaching subject requirement.
Music – Instrumental (not Vocal): You must have four
full‑year (or equivalent) undergraduate courses in the
teaching subject, with at least two of these being
studio courses. An alternative to this requirement
is an acceptable degree with at least two full‑year
(or equivalent) courses in the teaching subject as
well as five or more years of extensive training and
professional experience in the field.
Science – General: You must have completed a
combination of at least three full‑year (or equivalent)
courses spanning two of the following subject areas:
biology, chemistry, and physics. We accept additional
courses from earth and atmospheric space science
or natural science.
Visual Arts: You must have four full‑year (or equivalent)
undergraduate courses in the teaching subject, with at
least two of these being studio courses. An alternative
to this requirement is an acceptable degree with
at least two full‑year (or equivalent) courses in the
teaching subject and five or more years of extensive
training and professional experience in the field.

You are required to choose two teaching subjects and
must have completed, or be completing, an honours
or four‑year degree with at least six full‑year university
courses in the first teaching subject and three full‑year
university courses in the second. Applicants to the
Intermediate/Senior division must be completing or
have completed a four‑year honours degree.
You will only be considered for admission if you
successfully complete a minimum of two full-year
university courses for the first teaching subject
and one full-year university course for the second
teaching subject with at least a “B” average by the
December 1, 2015, deadline. If you present more than
the required number of courses, the average will be
calculated using the highest grades.
Important Notes
You may select only one from the four business options
offered (Accounting, Entrepreneurship, General, or
Information and Communication Technology). You
cannot combine any of the Business Studies options
with Economics for their two teaching subjects. You
cannot combine any of the Business Studies with
Computer Studies for your two teaching subjects.
You cannot combine Economics and Computer
Studies as your two teaching subjects. There is
potential for conflicts or repetition in choosing similar
teaching subjects, such as ones that fall under the
business, computer studies or economics, geography,
environmental science and science category. Although
you may select these combinations, we advise that
you may have the same course director and same
course outline for both teaching subject classes.
Some of the above subjects (e.g., Business Studies),
depending on numbers, may only be available through
independent study courses.
Business Studies: As a first teaching subject, at least
three full‑year (or equivalent) courses must be from
the teaching subject selected and the remaining
courses may be from a related business field. As
a second teaching subject, at least two full‑year
(or equivalent) courses must be from the teaching
subject selected. You cannot select any combination
of Business Studies options as your two teaching
subjects. You may select only one from the four
business options offered. You cannot combine any of
the Business Studies options with Economics for your
two teaching subjects. You cannot combine any of

the Business Studies options with Computer Studies
for your two teaching subjects.
English: You must have completed at least three
full‑year (or equivalent) courses spanning three of
the following subject areas: Shakespeare; Canadian
Literature; Postcolonial Literature; Gender Studies;
and Language and Writing.
Environmental Science: The best preparation for
teaching environmental science is a BSc degree or
equivalent Honours degree in environmental science.
You are required to have at least six full-year university
courses or equivalent in the first teaching subject.
Family Studies: As a first teaching subject, you
must present six full‑year (or equivalent) courses
in family studies, or three full‑year (or equivalent)
courses from psychology, sociology or social science
or a combination of these courses, as well as three
full‑year (or equivalent) courses from Early Childhood
Education (ECE), business studies, health studies
or fashion studies, in any combination. As a second
teaching subject, you must present three full‑year (or
equivalent) courses in family studies, or two full‑year
(or equivalent) courses from psychology, sociology or
social science or any combination, and one full‑year
(or equivalent) course in ECE, business studies, health
studies or fashion studies.
Fine Arts (Dance, Dramatic Arts, Music – Instrumental
and/or Visual Arts): As a first teachable, you must have
six full-year (or equivalent) courses in your teaching
subject, including three full-year (or equivalent) studio
courses, and a second teachable of three full-year (or
equivalent) courses and two full-year (or equivalent)
studio courses.
Geography: A course in “Introduction to
Geoinformatics” (or its equivalent) is recommended.
Health and Physical Education: As a first and second
teachable, you must have four practicum (PKIN)

sociology, and social science.

The Faculty of Education offers a Consecutive BEd
option in Technological Education. Applicants to
the Consecutive BEd in Technological Education
will be certified to teach at the Intermediate/Senior
(Grades 7 to 12) certification level. To be eligible for
the Consecutive BEd (Technological Education), you
must:
• hold an approved degree in a related technology
field that aligns with the current Technological
Education curriculum from an accredited degree
granting institution;
• present an overall grade point average of at least
a “B”, based on the final two years of full-time
study in an applied degree program; and
• have two years of work‑related experience.

If you have a degree that does not align with
the Technological Education curriculum, you can
apply to the program if you have five years of
work‑related experience in a related technology field.
Successful applicants will be selected on the basis of
education – related experience, references, university
grade point averages, and a personal statement.

Information Form. You will receive a letter and an
