UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON Pre-Engineering Transfer Information This handout includes admission requirements to the University of Washington, information about the UW College of Engineering and UW Engineering program admission and graduation requirements and courses from North Seattle that will transfer to the College of Engineering. Pre-Engineering students are encouraged to contact: Student Academic Services, 301 Loew Hall For questions or to make an appointment with an adviser, call (206) 543-1770 or email engradv@uw.edu. Come to a Transfer Thursday information session: http://admit.washington.edu/Visit/TransferThursday Drop-in advising is available autumn, winter and spring quarters, Tuesday through Friday, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. There are no drop in hours during summer quarter or during school breaks. Prospective Transfer Student Information: http://www.engr.washington.edu/prosp_students/transfer.html Admission to the University of Washington To become an engineering student at the University of Washington, transfer students must apply and be admitted to both the University of Washington AND an Engineering department. The University application deadlines are significantly sooner than the College of Engineering application deadlines. Applicants with incomplete coursework should contact individual engineering departments before the application period ends to learn if you can be eligible to apply. Admission is competitive. To apply, students must complete the online application (http://www.engr.washington.edu/uapp/) and submit required transcripts by the specified deadlines. The criteria by which applicants are judged vary from department to department, but are based in part on the GPA earned in prerequisite courses. More information on the College of Engineering admission processes: http://www.engr.washington.edu/prosp_students/transfer.html#applyengr College of Engineering Application Deadlines Autumn quarter – July 1- All Engineering departments admit transfer students Autumn quarter, with the exception of Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering which admit students Spring quarter only. *Spring quarter – February 1 – Bioengineering, Chemical, Computer, Computer Science, Electrical, Industrial, & Systems, Materials Science, Bioresource Science, and Human Centered Design & Engineering admit students Spring quarter. Aeronautics and Astronautics, Civil & Environmental and Mechanical Engineering DO NOT ADMIT students Spring quarter. Spring quarter admissions to the University is only an option for students who are also applying for direct entry to an engineering program that offers Spring admission. Because Spring quarter is not open for general admission, the university online application will not be available. Applicants will submit a paper application to the UW Admissions office. 1 College of Engineering Admission/Graduation Requirements Application and graduation requirements in mathematics, natural sciences, written and oral communication and engineering fundamentals for all engineering programs are summarized on the next page. A majority of these requirements are typically completed in the first two years of study prior to transfer. For more information on Human Centered Design and Engineering program requirements, contact the department advisor or the Engineering Advising Center (www.hcde.washington.edu/current/advise). Visual, Literary and Performing Arts (VLPA) and Individuals & Societies (I&S) Requirements For graduation all programs require minimum of 10 credits of VLPA and 10 credits of I&S course work plus an additional 4‐10 credits of coursework from either category. The total VLPA/I&S requirements as well as other graduation requirements for each department are available on‐line here: www.engr.washington.edu/curr_students/academics/schedule.html It is generally recommended that about half of the VLPA and I&S requirements be taken during the first two years of study.
