Florida FBLA,
I am pleased to announce that it has been another successful year in
Florida FBLA-PBL. With nearly 11,000 members, Florida FBLA is the 5 th largest chapter in the nation! However, our strength doesn’t just come in numbers. With so many members working so diligently to Capture the Moment in 2012-13, Florida FBLA is sure to make a major impact on the National level come this July. I am confident that Florida FBLA will shine at the upcoming National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California and show the rest of the nation which state is truly the strongest in the country.
Although another year in Florida FBLA-PBL is coming to a close, we must not forget that there are still many opportunities to get involved and make the most of the remainder of the year. With the State Leadership
Conference fast approaching, I encourage each and every one of you to make that final push to participate in the State and National Projects, Autism Speaks and March of
Dimes. They are both tremendous causes, and every chapter that participates gets recognized on stage at the State Leadership Conference. However, if community service is not your forte—which should never hinder your participation—do remember that there are two very worthwhile fundraisers that take place at our very own SLC. For those singers out there, FBLA Idol is calling you. Who knows, we just may find the next singing sensation right here in our very own organization. Additionally, the Florida FBLA-PBL
Foundation’s Annual Basket Fundraiser will take place again this year. There will be many amazing items up for grabs, so you won’t want to miss out. Remember, all proceeds for the two previously mentioned events go directly to the FBLA-PBL Foundation.
However, it would be remiss to ignore the event that everyone is waiting for: the State Leadership
Conference. Held on April 25-28 at the beautiful Rosen Centre hotel in Orlando, Florida, the SLC is an event that you won’t want to miss. For those of you competing, I wish you the best of luck in your quest to make it to the National Leadership Conference. However, for those members who might be interested in running for State Office at this upcoming conference, it is with great pride that I announce the completion of the very first Florida FBLA State Officer Guide. For those of you who may potentially be Florida
FBLA-PBL’s next State Officer team, be on the lookout for the publication of the guide. It contains some very valuable information that may be the key to winning your election.
In closing, I would like to thank you— the members—for making this a year to remember for not only myself, but also the entire State Officer team. Your passion for the organization inspires us to work as hard as we can to make your experience as memorable as possible.
Without you, none of this would be possible, and for that I am forever grateful.
Yours Truly,
Steven Tessler
FBLA State President
Ready. Set. Go! The 2013 State Leadership Conference is just a couple weeks away. I, for one, am so ready to be reunited with 500+ of my PBL friends. To make everything ever more exciting, we are bringing our conference to the beautiful Orlando for the first time in many years.
To kick off the conference, we will have a great keynote speaker. All the hard work and preparation will be tested and showcased at the conference with over 50 competitive events. We will find out who is the best in the state and will be representing us at the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, CA, in June.
We will be showing support for our state philanthropy, Autism Speaks, with an onsite mini-walk to help raise awareness and fund for the organization. We will also continue the tradition of basket drawing to benefit the Florida FBLA-PBL foundation. The winning school will receive priority seating for the awards banquet at the 2014 State Leadership Conference.
Between the competitive events, general sessions, and philanthropy events, make sure you also find some time to come by the campaign area and get to know the candidates. I am confident that this next class of state officers will take our organization to a new height.
But, don’t forget to give yourself some time off to enjoy the city and get to know your fellow
PBL members. CityWalk, the International
Drive, Mall of Millennia, and Downtown Disney are just a few of attractions the city has to offer.
Just remember to bring a camera and Capture the Moments along the way.
As we count down until the start of the opening session for the 2013 State Leadership
Conference, remember it is never too early to find something fabulous to wear to the awards banquet. Knowing how hard you all have worked and studied, I’m sure we’ll be seeing many of you on stage that night.
-Shuyun Xue, District II Vice President
Arrival
When you arrive at the conference hotel, you may seem overwhelmed at the amount of students you see!
The hotel room may not be ready yet due to the overload of people checking in, but do not sit around! Get up & network! Make connections with friends from across the state!
General Sessions
At the State Conference there are 3 General Sessions. The first one is the General Session, this is where the State Leadership Team will introduce themselves. Also you will listen to the campaign speeches. The
Second General Session is when you will listen to the Keynote Speaker. During the first two sessions you need to dress in business attire. Be sure you follow the Florida FBLA Dress Code.On the final day of the conference you will attend the Closing Session, and this is when you dress in your formal attire. This is when we will find out who will be representing Florida at the National Leadership Conference.
Workshops & Campaign Booths
During the conference you can attend workshops and visit the campaign booths. During these times you are required to wear FBLA business attire. Be sure to stop by each candidates booth and ask questions on what they can bring to Florida FBLA.
Florida FBLA Idol
Do you think you can be the next Florida FBLA Idol? Well, in order to find out you need to show up early to reserve your spot! If you do not want to participate in Idol, you are encouraged to come watch and cheer on your favorite contestant.
- Kaitlyn Bailey, Region I Vice President
Florida FBLA Members you better start to study and practice for your competitions, because this year the
National Leadership conference will be held in the beautiful Anaheim California. This year the national leadership conference is going to be a blast with the many attractions available in the area, such as the well-known Disneyland. The National Leadership Conference will be from June 27 – June 30. Don’t forget to also sign up to participate in FBLA-PBL Institute for Leaders workshop from June 26 – June 27.
Institute for Leaders is a high-energy, intensive, two-day seminar that is a focused-leadership experience for state and local chapter officers, as well as members and advisers. FBLA-PBL has many exciting events planned for its members at the conference from a March of Dimes walk to guest speakers. For more information about the National Leadership Conference, you can log onto fbla-pbl.org or contact one of your state officers. You can also log onto FBLA’s homepage to watch this year’s NLC promotional video. Make sure to work hard and plan ahead to attend this amazing conference, and I hope to see you all there.
- Emily Gonzalez, Region V Vice President
As FBLA members, we know all too well how quintessential fundraising is to FBLA. At this year’s state conference we’ve got two opportunities for members to give back to the organization that does so much for us. Fundraisers not only allow for exciting events like the State
Conference and activity days, it also keeps costs down for you.
With that said, do you think you’ve got what it takes to be the next FBLA Idol? Or maybe you’re more suited to be the Randy Jackson or Simon Cowell of the show. Either way, FBLA Idol packs a night full of entertainment for you, and helps to keep our organization going strong. Contestants are asked to make a small donation to participate before they go up on stage and show their vocal skills to a panel of judges and audience. The winner will be determined by the judges and crowned “FBLA 2013 Idol” during the awards ceremony.
If Idol isn’t quite your cup of tea, there are still opportunities for you. The annual FBLA-PBL silent basket auction will be returning to the state conference. The chapter that creates the winning basket will be given a Gold Chapter
Membership for next year. Choosing a theme for your basket can help to increase your chances of winning; last year’s winning basket was reading themed and included a Kindle Fire and Starbucks gift card along with some rainy day goodies. The competition is thick, but the basket doesn’t have to be expensive. One way to make a great basket for very little money is to talk to businesses about making charitable donations. All donations made to FBLA are tax deductible and many businesses are more than willing to help out our members.
- Chelsea Gadbois, Region IV
Vice President

2012 PBL State Leadership Conference.
Autism Speaks was founded in February 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, grandparents of a child with autism. Their longtime friend Bernie Marcus donated $25 million to help financially launch the operation. Since then Autism Speaks has grown into the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.
Autism Speaks’ goal is to change the future for all who struggle with autism spectrum disorders. They are dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments and cure for autism; to raising public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society; and to bringing hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder. They are committed to raising the funds necessary to support these goals.
Autism Speaks aims to bring the autism community together as one strong voice to urge the government and private sector to listen to our concerns and take action to address this urgent global health crisis. It is their belief that working together, they will find the missing pieces of the puzzle.
- Mickie Abel, PBL District IV Vice President
Autism Speaks is our state project for the 2012-2013 year. As the world’s largest autism advocacy organization, Autism Speaks helps to fund autism research as well as help to raise awareness and conduct outreach activities for families and communities. Florida FBLA-PBL is so excited to be part of this amazing cause and welcomes them as our state philanthropy partner. Just like March of Dimes, the easiest way to get involved with Autism Speaks is through one of the sponsored walks. To register for a walk with the organization, simply to go to www.autismspeaks.org and follow the directions on the website. Of course, the walks themselves aren’t the only way for you to get involved with the organization. We also encourage chapters and members to come up with other creative ways to help raise awareness for this important issue. Our goal is to have each chapter raise $188 because Autism affects 1 out of 88 children each year. As an organization, we are trying to raise $28,000.00 this year. You can help to reach this goal at the Florida
FBLA-PBL joint website with Autism Speaks at http://fundraise.autismspeaks.org/Markslist/campaign/ display/profile.do?campaignId=1257. This is the states way of keeping track of how much your chapter has donated so that the top chapters can get recognized on stage at the State Leadership Conference.
- AJ Everitt, FBLA Region II Vice President
The March of Dimes is a non-profit organization recognized for its efforts and helping mothers with pregnancies and infants born prematurely, and that works to improve the health of mothers and babies. It was founded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938 to combat the problems that many families were facing with these problems.
The March of Dimes is an organization that actually helps people. It helps raise funds for re-mature infants that otherwise would not have a chance without the research that has been done through the funds that were given/raised to aid in that research.
Their mission is working for prematurely campaign. I found that they actually start with their care with the history of the birth mother’s family, then helping her before the birth and during the birth. They educate woman that are trying to get pregnant and before the pregnancy and preparing them for the pregnancy, as well as with the proper baby care and how to cope with things once the baby comes
Their mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature births, and infant mortality. They carry out their mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies’ lives. The March of Dimes researches, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health; prematurity, birth defects, low birth weight.
- Mickie Abel, PBL District IV Vice President
FBLA-PBL has a long standing partnership with March of Dimes. In fact, this year marks a monumental year for both organizations as FBLA-PBL celebrate our 70 th years, March of Dimes is celebrating a very special 75 th birthday. Our organization has been one of the largest supporters of March of Dimes with donations of over half a million dollars every year for the past several years. This year, the national team has set a new goal for our organization and we are challenged to increase our fund raising goal by
5% to 525,000.
There are several ways for your chapters to get involved with March of Dimes, there are even more ways for you to get involved as an individual. March of Dimes hosts several walks and events throughout the year and you can check www.marchofdimes.com to find out the time and location of those walks and events. In addition, March of Dimes always hosts mini walks and sets up exhibition at our state Fall Leadership Conference and all of the national conferences. You can even host events and walks in your community and school to support the cause. If you need some funding to get you started on a March of Dime project, make sure to also check out the March of Dime mini-grants.
- AJ Everitt, FBLA Region II Vice President
Competition is a huge part of what we do here in FBLA. Whether it’s testing or performing, if you’re dedicated to it and want to win, it will help you build character and skills that you will use later on in life even if at the end of the day you don’t want to be in the business field these are skills that will help you in any field of work.
When it comes to getting ready for competition it takes a lot of time and preparation to be the best you can be at it. If you’ve made it past your districts then you already begun to put time and effort, but there’s no reason to be thinking that you’ve prepared enough. Continue to use your practice materials and use your time wisely, the next step is states and the competition is intense. You’ll have the best competitors from all the districts coming together to have a chance to place and move on to the national level.
Just because you made it to states though, doesn’t mean you’ve made it to the finals. Depending on your competition determines how you make it to the final round. If you’re a test taker, such as Introduction to Business Communications and Business Law, there is no final round, you take your test once and that’s it. If you’re a performer and a test taker, such as Parliamentary Procedures and Management Decision Making, you must pass your test being either the top ten or top five (depending on your competition) and then you perform to determine who will be on stage. If you are solely a performer, such as Job Interview and Public Speaking you complete twice, once in the preliminary stage and in the finals.
At the end of the day, for performers first and second place moves on to the national level and for test takers first, second and third place move on. Good luck to all competitors and I hope to see you all at the state conference.
- Anthony Lopez, FBLA State Parliamentarian
From February 10-12, FBLA-PBL State Officers had the opportunity of a lifetime. They were able to travel from all parts of the state to Tallahassee, Florida. In this trip, State Officer had the chance to conduct a mock trial for a current case that is going to the State Supreme Court. Whether it was to be Justices or lawyers, they were given the hands-on experience. They were also able to meet with great individual from the legislature/lobbyist and learn about what is their role in the legislature. In addition,
State Officers were able to learn about several bills and provide lobbyist and legislature about their insights. State Officers also were given the opportunity to have a mock senate and house of representative meeting, they had a hands-on practice of how a bill gets passed. They even had some special insights on Florida’s history.
We encourage everyone in the state to have this experience of a lifetime. Interested in this opportunity?
Go ahead and apply to become a State Officer.
- Nathalie Aviles, PBL District V Vice President
The 2013 Tallahassee state officer trip was a huge success! The officers got to hear from Representatives Janet Cruz, Mike Fasano, Ross Spano, Jake Raburn, and Jamie Grant as well as Senators John
Legg and Lizbeth Benacquisto and other legislators and commissioners of the capital. In two jam-packed days graciously coordinated and scheduled by Mr. Pierce and Mrs. Jones, we were even able to hold our own mock Supreme Court session and mock Senate session as well as tour the capital and walk around scenic Tallahassee. We took back countless lessons and unforgettable memories and hope to implement our experiences in ways in the future. The legislators had strong political ideas and it was especially interesting to hear their background stories. Representative Janet Cruz had a very humble beginning, starting off her career as a teenage mom. She was able to secure a job as an optician and managed to work her way up the ladder to become extremely successful today. Bruster Beavis of AIF Trade Association reminded us to always be honest - you only have one chance to make a first impression on someone. Adam Babington, lobbyist for Walt Disney World, told us to start at the bottom and don’t burn the bridges (meaning create bad relationships with people) because you never know when you might regret them. These stories and so many others shared with us sparked our interest and inspired the state officer team to become even better business leaders
- Annika Mulaney, FBLA State Secretary
The beginning of every school year brings many challenges and opportunities for PBL chapters across the state. Chapters are often faced with the challenges to reorganize, plan activities, and recruit members. Without a doubt, recruiting is one of the most important tasks that a chapter must do.
For any organization, the most important resource it has is its membership. It is clear that the more dependable, enthusiastic members you attract, the more you can accomplish. You can make your chapter stronger by keeping these points in mind for the upcoming school year:
A large and diverse membership makes for rich brainstorming sessions, unique projects, interactive meetings, and lightened individual workloads.
Bigger is better. The more members a chapter has, the more resources it will have to dedicate to many worthy activities.
FBLA-PBL’s recognition and influence are assured when a larger portion of your student body and, by extension, your community is involved in your activities.
A mutual relationship exists between members and local chapters. Your members enhance the chapter as a whole, while the chapter enriches your members.
Recruitment Publicity
Spread the word about PBL by speaking to people. Remember that one of the most effective ways of promotion is through word-of-mouth. People like visuals, so design posters advertising meetings and projects. Consider creating a chapter display case and keep it up-to-date with pictures, articles, and awards.
Design chapter t-shirts for all members to wear during chapter meetings, events, or conferences. Find a place at your school with a great amount of foot traffic and set up a PBL recruitment booth. This is an opportunity for you to meet and greet potential members. When preparing your booth, keep these points in mind:
Attract them with giveaways like candy, food, brochures, and raffles.
Stand out with large signs, bright shirts, and decorations.
Creatively convey PBL activities by playing recruitment video, and displaying chapter scrapbooks and conference awards.
Be organized. Have a sign-up sheet to collect contact information, membership applications, and a receipt book to begin collecting dues.
Use this booth as an opportunity to promote an upcoming event
Be welcoming. Have many people at the table and smile as people walk by
Remember to always explain the benefits of joining PBL to potential members. Here is a list of reasons to join PBL:
Acquire leadership skills Travel
Win recognition at conferences Network and meet new people
Gain community service experience Compete in business skill events
Improve or enhance job skills

Serving Florida FBLA-PBL has been one of the most humbling opportunities of my life. As I get ready to say goodbye to this year, I just can’t stop thinking how the whole experience has been a page turned too quickly. Wasn’t it just yesterday when I was getting ready to take the office? I am grateful for all the lessons, friendships, and growth that I will take away with me. Members and advisers, thank you for all your support, none of these would have been possible without your unconditional love. I wish you all best of luck and as always, may success be ever in your future.

That is the most that I will miss, because you see I learned that from all of you and have become a much better person because of it. Thank you for this great opportunity of being one of your State Officers this year.

The FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) are the epitome of the term "do gooder." Faithful to their creed to develop an understanding of American business enterprise as they build character, citizenship, and patriotism, the Clewiston Middle School chapter actively seeks opportunities to serve their community.
Led by FBLA adviser, Ms.
Lovvorn Dixon, keyboarding instructor at CMS, the students ended 2012 with a band. They completed two projects; one collecting and donating food items for
Thanksgiving, in which they blessed three needy families in the community, and most recently, a
Christmas project.

For their last event of 2012, they presented Palm Terrace Nursing Facility of Clewiston with banners that exclaimed "Have a Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year." Along with the banners, they also presented numerous poinsettia plants to the residents. They are all about spreading cheer and making an impact on the community.
Palm Beach Central
FBLA is ready to
"Capture the Moment" this Spring with competition season starting in
January with District XX competitive event. In December, our Chapter did this event called
“Pleasant City” in which we gathered presents and came up with Christmas activities and went to this elementary school in Rivera Beach called
“Pleasant City elementary” and gave the kids a
Christmas time they would never forget. FBLA is also operating the school store at Palm Beach Central, which has tremendously helped with fundraising towards the State Leadership Conference and National
Leadership Conference. Prior to District competitions, Palm Beach Central held a study hall for all competitors so that they would be able to learn more about their competitive event and get study materials. At this study hall, we brought in several individuals to assist students with events in areas such as Public Speaking and Word Processing. This Spring we will also be raising money for our National Community
Service project - March of Dimes.
We will be raising money by holding a night at a yogurt shop with proceeds going toward our cause.
We are also thrilled to have Joel
Chong, Palm Beach Central FBLA
President, selected as an assistant to the Vice President for the
Region V action council.
FBLA-PBL week is observed the second week of February. This week encourages knowledge and experience, while also improving interaction among the members, the officers and the advisers, further improving communicational and intrapersonal skills, skills necessary in the working world.
On Monday, February 11, 2013, members were encouraged to watch the National President Forum. The National President Forum was an online presentation directed by national FBLA president, Nikitas Kanellakopoulos and national Professional Division President,
Brad Howard that took place early in the evening. Besides acting as a kick-off to FBLA-PBL week members obtained great ideas that could be implemented in our chapter in the future.
On Tuesday, February 12, 2013 members were given the opportunity to teach a business class. Anyone interested in teaching agreed on a lesson to teach the students business class. Members prepared a lesson for this day, and taught the class their lesson for the first hour of the class. The members had to act as a teacher would, ensuring that the students understood the lesson and providing an assessment at the end to determine how much the students learned.
On Wednesday, February 13, 2013 members Dressed For Success, in an effort to display their readiness to ignite innovation. Being that it was also Adviser Appreciation Day, members thanked the advisers for their hard work and dedication to the organization, and our chapter in particular – recognizing that not any teacher is willing to spend four days away from their homes at a conference. In the afternoon, officers showed their appreciation by treating the advisers to a well-deserved Olive Gardens lunch.
On Thursday, February 14, 2013 the chapter celebrated Valentine’s Day, the day love is shared amongst friends and partners. As entrepreneurs that we are, we took advantage of this business opportunity and sold Valentine’s Day balloon bouquets. These bouquets were open for purchase to any student. The proceeds from this fundraiser went to the FBLA treasury meant to provide students financial aid for attending conferences.
On Friday, February 15, 2013 members participated in a Career Day. This Career Day, involved representatives from various careers to speak to Mater Academy middle school students about career responsibilities and obtaining a job in that field. The speakers gave insight into the business world, and encouraged students to become more active in their FBLA chapters.
On Saturday, February 16, 2013 a select group of the most involved members were invited to South
Florida Autism Charter School where a field day was being hosted. These individuals interacted with autistic kids, while playing games on the school playground. When the field day was over, the group was asked to reflect on their experience, and all those who participated agreed that it was marvelous experience.
Newsome High School’s FBLA chapter has hit off the New Year with a strong start: With our members and supporters already raising over 50 lbs. of soda can tabs for

It is a vital part of our fundraising efforts so that we can send our hard-working members to state competitions. Even though there is much left to do, we are prepared and excited to fin-
In Lakeland, McKeel Academy of Technology's FBLA club is gearing up for a service project later this month. Club members will be improving their school through a clean-up and maintenance day. McKeel Academy's FBLA chapter, which includes both middle and high school students, recently completed the test competitions and is readying for the performance competitions in February. Members are ecstatic about their chapter's future, which is only in its second year of existence.
The University of Florida FBLA-PBL celebrated the 2013 FBLA-PBL Week with several exciting events.
To start the week off, our chapter received recognition from our city and we were presented with a proclamation from Mayor Craig Lowe. On Monday, our chapter partnered up with Target for a professional development workshop titled “Taking the Lead: Campus to Career." At the event, our members also had a chance to network and learn more about careers at Target. Then on Wednesday, our adviser was recognized on our Facebook page for all of his support and hard work. Overall, the 2013 FBLA-PBL week was a success at the University of Florida.
