This marks the second back-to-back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths in the program’s history. They did it once before from 1990-91 to 1992-93. It also matches the program best for consecutive postseason berths with five. The other streak took place from 1990-91 to 1994-95. NCAA Championship Tournament History: The Wildcats, playing in their 10th NCAA Tournament. are 2-17 all time in National Championship Tournament games. They won their first ever in 1958, defeating Linfield (Ore.) 76-62. Sixteen straight losses followed until the Wildcats beat Humboldt State 75-68 in the 2012 tournament’s opening round. They fell to eventual NCAA Champion Western Washington in the semifinals and fell in the opening round against Cal Poly Pomona last season. Let’s Go Polling: The Wildcats are listed second among “others receiving votes” in this week’s National Association of Basketball Coaches Top-25 Poll. Four teams in the West Regional are nationally-ranked. Seattle Pacific is No. 11, Cal State San Bernardino No. 16, Cal Baptist No. 17 and Cal Poly Pomona No. 24. Dixie State and Cal State Stanislaus join the Wildcats among “others receiving votes.” Sensational Season: The Wildcats have put together the 13th 20-win season in the 99 year-history of Chico State men’s basketball and their second in three years. Their current .759 winning percentage is third best among all of those 20-win teams. 1984: 25-10 (.714) 2012: 25-8 (.758) 1941: 23-4 (.852) 1993: 23-7 (.767) 1976: 23-9 (.719) 1939: 22-9 (.710) 1991: 22-10 (.688) 1992: 22-10 (.688) 1949: 22-13 (.629) 2014: 22-7 (.759) 1955: 20-6 (.769) 1954: 20-8 (.714) 1974: 20-10 (.667) Ridiculous Run: Chico State’s 66 wins over the past three season marks the second winningest three-year run in the program’s history. The 1991, 1992 and 1993 teams combined for 67 wins. The current Wildcats are 6626 during that span. The 1991-93 Wildcats were 67-27. 3rd is 2nd best: The Wildcats’ third-place finish in the final CCAA regular season standings matches last year’s squad for their second best finish ever behind only the 2012 team’s CCAA title. Prior to that season, Chico State’s best ever CCAA finish was tied for third, where it finished in 2003 and 2005. This marked just the sixth time in 16 seasons (and third straight) the Wildcats finished CCAA play with a winning record. They finished 16-6 in 2012, 15-7 in 2003, 14-8 in 2004 and 2013, and 13-7 in 2005. Milestone Watch: Sean Park will play in his 116th game as a Wildcat Friday, moving into second all time. Damario Sims played in a school record 119...Park is two 3-pointers shy of 100 in his career, something only 12 ’Cats before him have accomplished...Jordan Semple, the Wildcats’ all-time leading shot blocker, needs two more to reach 100 in his career. Keys to Victory: The Wildcas are 17-3 this season when attempting more free throws than their opponent, 17-3 when holding opponent to less than 45 percent shooting; and 18-3 when allowing 72 or fewer points. All-time versus NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional teams in the postseason: Cal State San Bernardino: 1-1 (Won 80-73 in the 2013 CCAA Championship Tournament semifinals; Lost 92-60 in the opening round of the 2004 NCAA Championship Tournament). Seattle Pacific: 0-0. Cal Poly Pomona: 1-3 (Won 77-73 in the semifinals of the 2014 CCAA Championship Tournament; Lost 6961 in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Championship Tournament; Lost 78-64 in the 2013 CCAA Championship Tournament final; Lost 80-77 in the 2010 CCAA Championship Tournament semifinals). Cal Baptist: 0-0 Dixie State: 0-0 Cal State Stanislaus: 2-1 (Lost 82-70 in the 2014 CCAA Championship Tournament title game; Won 86-80 in the 1993 NCAC Shaughnessy final; Won 97-88 in the opening round of the 1991 NCAC Shaughnessy Tournament). Their 22 wins are tied for the sixth most in school history. The names Carraway, Park and Parker are scattered throughout the program’s single-season and career top-10 lists. The trio helped the Wildcats win their first California Collegiate Athletic Association title in 2012 and became just the second group to make three consecutive NCAA Championship Tournament trips when they were awarded a bid on Sunday. But they fly to Ontario Thursday with a chance to attain something that no Chico State men’s basketball team ever has; something that would overshadow everything else; a first that would live forever in Chico State men’s basketball lore – a trip to the NCAA Championship Tournament Elite Eight. The Wildcats, seeded No. 4 in the eight-team NCAA Championship’s West Regional, face No. 5 seed Cal Baptist in the first round Friday night at 5 p.m. The winner of that game will face top-seeded host Cal State San Bernardino or Chaminade Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinals. The West Regional title tilt is scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m. The winner of the West Region advances to the Elite Eight at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind., March 26-29. No Chico State men’s basketball team has advanced beyond the second round of the NCAA Championship Tournament. It can be argued that no Chico State team has ever has ever had this excellent a chance. The Wildcat have beaten every team on their schedule this season, including West Regional participants Cal State San Bernardino (The No. 1 seed), Seattle Pacific (No. 2), Cal Poly Pomona (No. 3) and Cal State Stanislaus (No. 7). They’re a group of seasoned postseason performers: Friday’s game against Cal Baptist will be the team’s 14th postseason game in the past four years. Cal Baptist won the Pacific West Conference regular season championship. The Lancers, in their first season of NCAA Championships eligibility, won their first 17 games and 24 of their first 25. They finished the regular season with a 106-100 overtime loss at Dixie State (the region’s No. 6 seed) and then lost to No. 8 seed Chaminade 80-72 in the opening round of the Pacific West Conference Championship Tournament. The Lancers’ leading scorer is 6-foot-2 freshman Ryan Berg. The Pacific West Player of the Year hit 75 3-pointers while averaging 17.6 points per game. Anthony Cosentino, a 6-6 forward, averages 12.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Chris Brown, a 6-1 guard, averages 10.7 points and nearly four assists per game. And 6-8 center Kevin Crabb averages a team-high 7.8 rebounds, 7.1 points and more than a block per game. Crabb missed the Lancers’ last four games due to injury, but it sounds as though he’s likely to play. Michael Smith, a 6-4 guard averaging 8.4 points per game is the team’s other regular starter. All five Chico State starters are averaging in double-figures in scoring led by Parker at 14.7 points per game. Park is averaging 13.4, Carraway 12.9, junior Jordan Semple (a First Team All-CCAA selection) 12.4 points and team highs in rebounds (7.9), blocks (1.3) and steals (1.4) per game. Estrada is averaging 10.3 points per game and has made a team-high 70 3pointers.
