Boston University

SCHOLARSHIPS & MERIT AWARDS
If you are a high achiever, Boston University wants to help you accomplish
everything you possibly can as a BU student. One of the ways we do this is through a
variety of scholarships. Last year, Boston University awarded nearly $12.5 million in
merit-based scholarships to entering freshmen. Most awards are for academic
achievement, while others go to talented athletes, performers and artists. The
competition is keen: typically, recipients rank in the top 10% of their graduating
class, but achievements outside the classroom in schools and communities can also
make a difference.
BU has several kinds of academic scholarships. Some are available for specific areas
of study. For some, you must be nominated by your high school. And for other
scholarships, no additional steps are required for consideration. BU funded awards
may cover full tuition or a specified dollar amount.
Merit Awards
• Trustee Scholarship
• Presidential Scholarship
• Other Merit Scholarships
Most merit-based awards don’t require that you apply for financial aid, or have
calculated financial eligibility. However, we strongly encourage you to complete the
forms for need-based aid. Then, if you do receive a merit award, you’ll also be
considered for any supplementary financial aid for which you are eligible.
Merit scholarships are renewable for up to three additional years of study if you
complete 12 credits each semester, maintain the annual grade point average
specified in the award notification, and remain in good disciplinary standing at the
University.
University Residency Requirement: All students who receive University-funded
scholarships equal to or greater than tuition are required to live on campus.

Bradley University
Website: http://www.bradley.edu/admissions/freshman/cost/sources/
Scholarships
The following awards for freshman students entering in the fall 2015 semester are
based solely on academic performance without regard to financial need. Award
levels are guaranteed for qualified students whose admission applications are
complete by February 1.
Academic Scholarships
$24,000 to $48,000 over four years
A number of criteria are used in awarding these
scholarships including an assessment of academic performance and records of
leadership and service in schools and communities.
Caterpillar Employee Dependents Scholarship
These scholarships benefit the dependent children of Caterpillar employees,
retirees, and deceased employees. Scholarship amounts are determined by
Bradley's Office of Financial Assistance and range up to $1,500. Recipients must be
attending Bradley as full-time undergraduate students. Applications must be
submitted for each academic year. To be assured of full consideration, it is
recommended that you submit your application no later than March 1. A 2.5
cumulative grade point average is required. For a PDF version of the application,
Out-Of-State Scholarships
Annual awards of up to $4,000 recognize academically-talented students who
permanently reside outside of Illinois.
Relationship Scholarships
These $1,500 annual awards recognize academically-talented students who have
special relationships to Bradley including parents and grandparents who have a
degree from Bradley.
Fine and Performing Arts Scholarships
Awards up to $4,000 per year are available to students majoring in art, theatre and
music or participating in competitive speech (forensics). Awards up to $500 are also
available to non-music majors selected for one of our many instrumental and vocal
performance groups. Consideration for fine and performing arts scholarships
requires an audition or submission of a portfolio.
*Applicants with lower class ranks (or no rank) receive consideration based on grade
point average, curriculum and competitiveness of their high schools. Applicants with
lower test scores and extraordinary academic performance are also considered for
19
scholarships.
Grant Assistance
A combination of factors are considered when making these awards including a
student's academic performance, Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
results, and eligibility for other scholarships. Awards vary and can change from
year-to-year. This grant assistance could be funded by a variety of sources, including
Bradley, state, and federal grants. Grant assistance requires a 2.0 GPA for renewal.
Loans/Work Study
Federal Loans
At Bradley, federal loan recipients borrow directly from the federal government.
These low-interest loans are deferred until after graduation as long as students
maintain at least half-time enrollment. For more information on federal loan
programs, click here.
College Work Study
Students with limited family resources as determined by the results of the FAFSA
are provided this federally-funded opportunity to earn "spending money" through
part-time, on-campus employment. Students typically work 8 to 10 hours per week
at minimum wage earning about $1500 per year. Paychecks are issued bi-weekly.
Students wishing to work who are not eligible for College Work Study are able to find
other on-campus employment opportunities.

Scholarships are defined as a type of financial aid, in the form of a grant (a sum of
money or other aid) that does not have to be repaid by the recipients to assist
students as they pursue their studies. Scholarships are most often given to students
for a couple of reasons: academic merit/achievement, or financial need (or a
combination of both).
Clemson University Scholarships and Grants
University scholarships and grants are awarded to both entering freshmen and
upperclassmen. Scholarship awarding usually occurs twice a year; once in the
spring for the next academic year and once in the fall (called make-up awarding) for

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AWARDS (merit award) are granted to international

arts. Scholarships range from $1,000 per year to full tuition. A student must be
enrolled full time, maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, and achieve

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN Alumni Grants (need based) are awarded in amounts varying
with need. The process begins by completing the IWU financial aid application or
the College Board’s Profile. When the student has been accepted for admission,
either of these forms will become his or her application for financial
assistance. Renewals are available if satisfactory academic progress is maintained
and financial need is evident. Application for renewal is made to the Illinois
Wesleyan Financial Aid Office. Recipients must be enrolled full time and maintain a
specified cumulative grade point average to retain these grants.
PRE-THEOLOGY GRANTS are awarded on the basis of financial need not to exceed
one-half tuition to Methodist pre-ministerial students. However, qualified
applicants who receive other IWU grants in addition to private, State, or Federal gift
assistance must use these sources of aid to meet any portion of their eligibility for
the grant. Letters of recommendation from the student’s District Superintendent of
the United Methodist Church and from the chair of the Illinois Wesleyan Department
of Religion must be submitted to the University’s Financial Aid Office before April
42
15th for the fall term and before December 1st for the spring term. A
recommendation by the Department of Religion and satisfactory academic progress
must be maintained to continue the grant. Applications which must, of necessity, be
filed later than the above deadlines will be reviewed by the Financial Aid
Committee.
MINISTERIAL GRANTS are available on the basis of financial need not to exceed
one-half tuition to dependent sons and daughters of active United Methodist
ministers. However, qualified applicants who receive other IWU grants in addition
to private, State, or Federal gift assistance must use these sources of aid to meet a
portion of their eligibility for the grant. Applications must be submitted by the
general financial aid deadlines cited above and must include a letter from the parent
who is the minister, indicating conference affiliation. Satisfactory academic
progress must be maintained to continue the grant.
State of Illinois Grants and Scholarships
ILLINOIS STATE GRANTS are awarded non-competitively, requiring only that the
candidate be accepted or enrolled at an approved Illinois college or university. A
Free Application for Federal Student Aid also must be submitted to establish the
factor of need. In order to qualify for a grant, a student must be a legal resident of
the State of Illinois. Additional specific information concerning citizenship or
residency status may be obtained from the University’s Financial Aid Office.
The University urges students to make application for the above assistance by
February 1st since awards are granted according to the availability funds. IWU will
not provide off-setting assistance to those students who could have, but failed, to
make the appropriate application for this Illinois State Monetary Award. A recipient
of an Illinois State Monetary Award who enrolls for three course units must contact
the Financial Aid Office about reduced award eligibility.
Federal Government Grants
FEDERAL PELL GRANTS supported by the Federal government are available to
students who demonstrate significant financial need. Amounts range from $582 to
$5645. Students who enroll for less than 3 course units per semester must contact
the Financial Aid Office regarding award eligibility.

supported by the Federal government are also available to students from families
with significant financial need who would not be able to attend college without this
assistance. Amounts range from $200 to $4,000. The awarding of these grants is
based on established financial need, availability of Federal funds, and satisfactory
academic progress.

All admitted domestic freshmen are automatically considered for a merit
scholarship.
Merit Scholarships are awarded to students based on academic performance.
Academic performance indicators used to assess merit awards include a
combination of ACT and / or SAT scores, plus GPA. All accepted applicants are
reviewed by the scholarship review committee. Merit Awards have a range of
$2,500 - $15,500 / year.
Award Levels:
• Presidential $15,500
• Trustee $14,500
• Provost $13,500
• Academic Achievement $2,500
Grade/Score Improvement: Kettering uses the cumulative GPA or a recomputed
GPA (math, lab science, English only), whichever is higher. The highest subject
matter scores on the ACT or SAT are calculated to award the merit scholarship.
Kettering does not use the writing score on either the ACT or the SAT. Also, if your
grades or ACT/SAT scores improve, Kettering reevaluates and adjusts your
scholarship accordingly. All test scores and grades must be received by March 13,
2015.
We strongly encourage all students to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for
Federal Student Aid) to be considered for any need-based aid for which they qualify
beyond the amount of the merit award. Visit our Net-Price Calculator to determine
your potential award qualifications.
Kettering University: An Affordable Education that Works! Wages earned as a
result of co-op or an experiential learning experience can be used to off-set the cost
of your education. On average, students earn $40,000 - $65,000 over the course of
the program. Those dollars are above and beyond any merit scholarship, needbased-aid or other financial assistance you may receive. Click here to review
Kettering's Co-op Wage and Benefits Survey. Please note that all or portions of your
Kettering Merit Scholarship may be underwritten by endowment funds given by
generous friends of the University.

Private Scholarships
In addition to Saint Louis University Scholarships, many students receive
scholarships from outside sources. Though extra work is required, the reward can
be significant. It is recommended that students search for these scholarships
throughout their entire academic career. Free websites exist to assist you in your
search. You may want to consider opening a separate e-mail account to manage the
responses. Finally, you may want to write a simple, generic letter indicating why you
deserve the scholarship. Then as you continue to apply, you can simply edit your
letter to target a particular scholarship.

understanding of visual language and creative problem solving to all classes, clubs
and interactions enriches the University in a wide variety of ways.
The Department of Art and Design seeks to recruit highly motivated students who
want to create, communicate and collaborate, while studying the underlying history,
theory and craft of the art. It also seeks to design discipline and offer students an
opportunity to apply for recognition and reward.

Odyssey Scholarships
Families with incomes below $90,000 a year will have their federal student loan
obligation reduced or eliminated with grants from UChicago.
Thanks to an extremely generous gift of $100 million from an anonymous alumnus,
we are now able to offer an even more competitive financial aid package to many of
our students. The Odyssey program has allowed more students from modest
backgrounds the ability to pursue all that the University has to offer without the
worries of working to pay off loan debt. For students with family incomes below
$75,000 a year, all expected federal student loans are replaced with Odyssey
Scholarships. For students with family incomes between $75,000 and $90,000, half
of their expected federal student loan obligation is replaced with Odyssey
Scholarships. You must apply for need based financial aid in order to be considered
for this need-based University funded scholarship.

without any loans in their aid package. All loans will be replaced by grants, which do
not have to be repaid. UChicago Promise also includes an Admissions Academy,
which guides Chicago high schoolers toward selective four-year institutions, as well
as mentoring, preparation, internships and more.

National Merit Finalists are granted awards from one of three sources: the National
Merit Corporation, a sponsoring corporation, or from the University of Chicago. If
you are a finalist in this competition, simply report to the National Merit Scholarship
Corporation that the University of Chicago is your first-choice school. Your award
will be in the amount of $2,000 and is renewable for four years.
Outside Scholarships

HONORS COLLEGE ACADEMIC DISTINCTION AWARD – valued at $5,000 yearly,

President’s Award Program Honors
The President’s Award Program Honors (PAP-H) is a distinct part of the campuswide President’s Award Program (PAP). It is the University of Illinois’ most
prestigious four-year tuition and housing scholarship given to exemplary incoming
first-year Honors College students. Eligibility consideration for the PAP-H
scholarship is based on a combination of ACT composite score, class rank, and
belonging to one of the following applicant pools: high-achieving newly admitted
freshmen from historically underrepresented groups; high-achieving newly
admitted students from low-sending Illinois counties (defined as counties sending
an average of two or fewer students per academic year to the University of Illinois in
the past five year period); or high-achieving newly admitted dependent students
whose families are not expected to contribute to the cost of their education as
verified through FAFSA and financial aid application processes. Prospective
students apply for the award through the regular UIC admissions and Honors
121
College review processes. Once admitted to the university, potentially eligible
applicants are nominated by UIC’s Chancellor, then undergo individual review to be
considered as President’s Award Program Honors Scholars.
The President’s Award Program Honors Scholarship promotes academic excellence
within and beyond the Honors College community, connects students with Honors
College Fellows and other premier faculty members, and fosters civic engagement
and leadership. The Honors College provides a collaborative and supportive
educational environment that allows students to explore issues in depth through
small classes and specialized research projects. Living in Honors Housing in the
residence halls ensures proximity to UIC’s academic and social support networks
and keeps students involved in campus life. Honors College students are known on
campus as leaders, innovators, and contributors to the UIC community and beyond.
PAP-H Scholarships allow motivated and hard-working Honors College students to
make an even greater difference through their research and engaged citizenship.
OFFICE OF SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS
A wide range of scholarships supporting undergraduate and graduate study are
open to Honors College students. The Office of Special Scholarship Programs staff
assist students in searching for awards, exploring eligibility criteria and deadlines,
providing feedback on resumes and essays, and arranging for mock interviews if
needed to ensure the best possible outcome.
Deadlines for the awards run throughout the academic year. Preparing a
competitive application requires students to begin well in advance of the deadline.
In particular, the Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, Fulbright and Gates Cambridge have
early fall deadlines and preparation to apply should begin the previous spring.
While the financial assistance offered by these scholarships is the most obvious
reward, the process of applying also offers great benefits such as helping candidates
develop as thinkers, writers and speakers in ways that are advantageous to their
professional and personal development and building strong ties with faculty and
staff who support your application.

following list, visit the website at http://www.uic.edu/depts/oaa/ssp and follow up

UNDERGRADUATE MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS
Merit-Based Scholarships Awarded through the Office of Scholarships and
Student Aid
The University offers merit-based scholarships to a select group of entering firstyear, incoming students. These competitive awards recognize and encourage
academic excellence. Criteria for merit-based scholarships include academic
achievement, leadership qualities, commitment to service, and potential for success
at the University. Financial need is not a consideration. The University seeks to
identify students who have earned academic distinction in high school, but selection
goes beyond metrics of test scores and grade point averages, focusing on a holistic
review of the entire application. Because UNC-Chapel Hill is a selective university,
competition for these awards is very strong. The recipients of these awards
demonstrate impressive academic and extracurricular achievements, and show
promise of engagement in the life of the University.
There is no separate application for merit-based scholarships at UNC-Chapel
Hill. Selection is based on the information provided in the application for admission.
For fullest consideration for these awards, students must apply to the University by
the Admissions Office application deadline. Scholarship candidates who are selected
to move forward in the merit scholarship process will be notified shortly after they
have been admitted to the University. The notification will inform candidates of
Scholar Day and the selection process. All merit scholarship recipients will receive
automatic consideration for the University’s Honors Program, so there is also no
separate application for the Honors Program.
The Scholars Program at Carolina is made up of the Carolina Scholars, Colonel
Robinson Scholars, Johnston Scholars, and Pogue Scholars. To read more about The
Scholars Program at Carolina, please visit scholarsprogram.unc.edu.
Other merit-based scholarships awarded through the Office of Scholarships and

University of Notre Dame

Merit-Based Assistance
Notre Dame offers a limited number of merit scholarships to a limited number of
students, accepted for admission as a first-time incoming freshman, who
demonstrate exceptional accomplishment, leadership, commitment to service, and
intellectual promise.
Notre Dame has several signature and highly competitive programs including the
Penelope W. and E. Roe Stamps IV Leadership Scholars Program, the HesburghYusko Scholars Program, and the Suzanne and Walter Scott Notre Dame Scholars
Program. Additionally, Notre Dame offers a limited number of other merit-based
scholarship opportunities that range in value from $10,000 to $25,000 annually.
Typically, these scholarships are renewable for four years and recipients may be
invited to participate in leadership development and enrichment opportunities as
an additional benefit of their awards.
Selections for merit-based scholarships are made as part of the admission process
and most scholarships do not require separate application for consideration,
however, eligible students may be contacted directly with a request for additional
information (e.g. resume, phone interview, essay, etc.) prior to selection. The
Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars Program requires an additional application which is
outlined at http://hesburgh-yusko.org. Recipients of merit-based awards are
notified of their selection in early April.
Students who receive both merit scholarship and need-based scholarship from the

Federal Pell Grants

the financial aid process. Student Financial Services selects recipients based on the
scholarship's criteria; no separate application is necessary.

Mayor's Scholarship

Dean’s Graduate Merit Scholars
The Dean’s Graduate Merit Award is a one-time award of a designated amount
without respect to financial need. If financial need is demonstrated, this tuition
award must be coordinated with, and may include, other sources of assistance in
compliance with requirements of federal, state, and institutional financial
eligibility. Students may be full or part time, however, if their actual tuition costs
are less than the amount of the initial award, they are only eligible to receive up to
the actual cost of tuition and other USD expenses. The amount of the award is not
renewable; however, students may apply annually for a Dean’s Graduate Merit
Scholarship.

Villanova University
Website:
http://www1.villanova.edu/villanova/enroll/finaid/scholarships_grants.html
In the spectrum of educational funding, scholarships and grants are the "free
money." These awards do not need to be repaid. In general, scholarships are given
based on merit and grants are given based on financial need. A student is
automatically considered for Federal grants and Villanova-endorsed scholarships,
listed below, simply by applying for financial assistance from Villanova University.
For all other outside grants and scholarships, it is the student's responsibility to
verify application procedures.
Need-Based Grants
Villanova University Grant
This is an institutional grant based on financial need. Students must be
accepted/enrolled in a full-time (minimum of 12 credits per semester) in the day
college in an undergraduate degree program and pursuing their first baccalaureate
degree. All Villanova students must apply for need-based financial assistance to be
considered for this program. This award can be applied only to tuition charges billed
by Villanova University during the academic year (i.e. during the Fall and Spring
semesters) for a maximum of 8 semesters (4 years). To be given priority
consideration for the grant, students must meet the application deadline. May be
replaced by endowed scholarship funds.
Federal Pell Grant Program
This is a Federal grant for students demonstrating exceptional financial need and
accepted/enrolled in an undergraduate degree program. Application for Federal Pell
Grants may be made by submitting an initial FAFSA or a Renewal FAFSA. Part time
students may be eligible for Pell grants.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
This is a Federal grant administered by the educational institution based on
financial need. Only undergraduate degree candidates are eligible. Priority
consideration is given to Pell Grant recipients. All Villanova students must complete
the VU application and an initial FAFSA or the Renewal FAFSA to be considered for
the program.
PHEAA Grant
A Pennsylvania State Grant based on financial need for students and their parents
who qualify as Pennsylvania state residents and who are accepted/enrolled in an
undergraduate program and enroll for at least six credits each semester. For State
Grant consideration, students are required to file either an initial FAFSA or a
Renewal FAFSA by May 1. Additional information on the Pennsylvania State Grant
can be found at www.pheaa.org.
158
Other State Grants
Certain states allow residents to take their state grants into Pennsylvania for study
at Villanova. Students are responsible for checking with the respective State Higher
Education Agency as to the correct application necessary for state grant
consideration.
Scholarships
Each year, the University receives applications for admission from a group of gifted
and talented individuals. In determining the ways in which the University will
award financial assistance, a priority is placed on providing support on the basis of a
student's demonstrated financial need.
In addition to need-based financial aid, the University provides financial assistance
on the basis of student's academic achievements and their proven leadership and
participation in activities outside of the classroom, in both their school and
community; the University has a particular commitment to enrolling academic and
civic leaders who are traditionally underrepresented on college campuses (e.g., low
income, first generation and multicultural students.)
Presidential Scholarship
The Presidential Scholarship is a renewable, merit-based award covering full
tuition, room, board (up to 19 meals-per-week plan), general fee, and the cost
of textbooks for eight consecutive semesters. Presidential Scholars are
transformational leaders both on and off campus who have demonstrated a love of
learning and a commitment to enhancing both their local and broader civic
communities. Villanova Presidential Scholars represent diverse intellectual, social,
ethic, and economic backgrounds. Each year, of the 28 Presidential Scholarships, 6
scholarships are reserved for candidates from historically underrepresented
groups; including African American/Black, Latino/Hispanic, American
Indian/Native Alaskan, Asian/Pacific Islander, first in their family to pursue a
college education, and low income (generally Pell Grant eligible) students.
While there are no minimum grade point average or standardized test score
requirements for Presidential Scholarship eligibility, the average high school GPA
among Presidential Scholarship finalists for the Class of 2017 was 4.26/4.00 on a
weighted scale, the average combined SAT score (critical reading + math) was
1470/1600, with ACT scores that were similar in competitiveness. The Selection
Committee takes a holistic approach in reviewing applicants and looks at multiple
criteria including academic achievement, civic engagement, creativity, expertise in a
particular field, leadership and resiliency.
In order to be considered for the Presidential Scholarship, students must first be
nominated by the chief academic officer of their high school (principal, president,
headmaster), guidance counselor, or an official school designee. They can also be
nominated by a representative from a home school entity or non-profit educational
organization dedicated to helping high school students with the college search
159
process. They then must submit a completed application for admission by
December 1. Upon nomination, students will be given further instruction on how to
apply for the Presidential Scholarship.

The Villanova Scholarship is awarded on the basis of exemplary academic
achievement and accomplishments outside of the classroom. In order to be eligible
for consideration, students will need to be enrolled in a rigorous curriculum, rank in
the top 5% of their graduating class (if rank is reported), or have a minimum grade
point average of a 3.85 on a 4.00 weighted scale (if rank is not reported) and a
minimum combined SAT of 1380/1600 or a composite score of 31/36 on the
ACT. All grade point averages and class rank information is taken cumulatively at
the end of the sixth semester of high school.
For the 2013-14 academic year, scholarships (beginning at $2,000 per year) were
distributed to 1,341 admitted students for a total of $6.9 million. The average, nonnegotiable scholarship amount was valued at $5,060 per year. Recipients of the
scholarship averaged a 4.19/4.00 GPA on a weighted scale and 1450/1600 on the

renewed for an additional three years of undergraduate study if recipients maintain
