ADD YOUR NEW YORK STATE BOATING
SAFETY CERTIFICATE TO YOUR DMV
DOCUMENT
You now have the option of noting on your NYS Driver License, Learner Permit, or Non-Driver Photo ID Card
(issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles), that you have earned the New York Safe
Boating Certificate. For persons required to carry their Safe Boating Certificate when operating a motorboat or
personal watercraft, the DMV-issued document satisfies the requirement that the operator has received a safe
boating certificate.
If you have been issued a boating safety certificate by NYS Parks* in the past, you can now go to
https://shop.parks.ny.gov/BoaterSafety/ and apply to have the Adventure License anchor icon added to
your NYS Driver License, Learner Permit, or Non-Driver Photo ID Card, issued by the New York State
Department of Motor Vehicles.
If you would like to immediately receive a new copy of your NYS Driver License, Learner Permit, or NonDriver Photo ID, noting you have received a Boating Safety Certificate, you will be charged a fee of $12.50
($5.00 for a Non-Driver Photo ID) plus a convenience fee of $1.00.
If you would like to note on your Driver License, Learner Permit, or Non-Driver Photo ID that you have
completed the New York Safe Boating Course, but are willing to wait until the next regular DMV renewal
(currently Driver Licenses are renewed every eight years), you will not have to pay a fee.
*If you have a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadron Boating Safety Certificate, you must bring
your original certificate (do NOT bring this form) directly to any DMV office and pay the replacement license fee.
New York State Parks is unable to forward your information to the DMV.
