Figures collated for access and equity characteristics of applicants have been expanded this year to include Marketing, the Indigenous Branch and the Distinctly Australian program, in addition to the main Film Development program. For the second year in a row, AFC figures closely correlate with birthplace figures from the 1991 Census (latest figures available) for the Australian film and video production industry except for the Indigenous figures which are significantly higher. In 1996-97 applications to the AFC from Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people increased to 12.4% of total applications. This represents an increase for the AFC and is largely due to the inclusion of the AFC's Indigenous Branch initiatives in the 1996-97 figures. Percentages of people applying to the AFC born in America and New Zealand are slightly higher than the representation of these groups in the Census figures for film and video production. Analysis of successful applicants who advised birthplace information also shows close correlation with the Census figures with 264 (77%) successful applicants born in Australia and 77 (23%) born overseas. Australian Bureau of Statistics Census of Population and Housing 1991 (latest available figures). Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people data added by AFC from ABS unpublished data. * ABS figure refers to countries in Oceania (excluding Australia). AFC figures cover New Zealand only. ** 89% of the figure for Indigenous Australians relates to AFC Indigenous Branch initiatives. Notes: Based on analysis of 1,208 applicants to Film Development, including the Distinctly Australian program, the Indigenous Branch and the Marketing Branch in 1996-97. This represents (67%) of total applications to these programs. Due to the low numbers involved, for confidential reasons the Middle East category has been included in Asia. Figures may not total exactly due to rounding. The ABS figures also include a 'not stated' category of 0.23%. The ABS have urged caution in the use of the figures for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people complied by the Census due to the extremely small numbers involved.
