Assessment Task
‘Love and Other Catastrophes’
TASK : Written Assignment: Persuasive response: Feature Article
CONTEXT:
Within this drama unit, you have engaged in an in depth study of the play .......................................................... , and viewed
at least one contemporary film version of the text. You have analysed setting, plot, characters, language and the
timeless appeal of themes such as love, death, fate, revenge, honour, prejudice, justice, family and loyalty which
underpin these texts. Intertextual relationships with contemporary literature and current affairs have also been
considered.
TASK:
You are to adopt the role of a features writer for The Courier Mail. You are aware that ACARA has recently
released a draft version of the national curriculum in English. This document does not stipulate the study of
Shakespearean texts.
You are required to write a feature article which persuades your readers, to accept that Shakespearean plays are
valued by contemporary society due to their aesthetic features , including language techniques and themes
and consequently, should be studied in secondary schools.
In constructing your argument, you will need to explore and analyse the attitudes and values revealed in your
play.
To support your standpoint, it is essential that you compare and contrast the themes presented in the
Shakespearean text with themes and ideas evident in contemporary literature and/or current affairs.
In presenting your feature article, consideration should be given to visual features such as column format, colour
choices, fonts and images.
