Leonard Zeidenberg First Amendment Award
Named for the late Broadcasting & Cable senior correspondent, this award is presented annually to a radio or television journalist
or news executive whose work, through high standard and significant achievements, embodies the spirit of the First Amendment
and its free-press principles.
2014 Honoree Lester Holt
Lester Holt was named Principal Anchor of “Dateline” in September 2011. Holt serves as the
weekend anchor for the flagship broadcast “NBC Nightly News,” and is also the co-anchor of the
weekend edition of “Today.” In addition, Holt serves as fill-in anchor and correspondent for “NBC
Nightly News with Brian Williams” and the weekday “Today” program. He also contributes to MSNBC,
NBC’s 24-hour cable news network.
Holt joined the NBC News family in 2000 and has reported from many of the world’s hot spots. In
2003 he reported from the Kuwait/Iraqi border as US forces prepared to launch their invasion of Iraq.
In 2006, he reported from the front lines in Lebanon on the war between Israel and Hezbollah and
from London on the terror threat to U.S. bound-airliners from the UK. In early 2010, Holt traveled to
Haiti where he reported on the immediate aftermath and response to the devastating earthquake. In
early 2011, Holt reported from the streets of Cairo on the latest political and civil unrest in Egypt. In
March 2011, Holt travelled overseas to cover the earthquake and nuclear crisis in Japan. Other major international stories he has
covered include the mysterious 2009 crash of an Air France jetliner over the South Atlantic. Holt was also among the early wave
of reporters to cover the oil leak disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. He was in the same region in 2005 when both hurricanes Katrina
and Rita came ashore.
Over the last year, Holt has covered a wide range of stories for “Dateline.” In August 2011 – telling the story of the larger struggle
in the American economy to lower unemployment – Holt reported from Millen, Georgia, a small industrial town so devastated
by the Great Recession that its unemployment numbers were more than twice the national average. In January of this year, Holt
conducted an exclusive interview with Oscar and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson, and the following month, he anchored a
special “Dateline” tribute to legendary singer, actress and producer Whitney Houston, who had died suddenly the day before. In
March 2012, Holt reported from Sanford, Florida on the latest in the Trayvon Martin case and in June 2012 – as part of “Dateline’s”
Emmy award-winning series, “America Now” – Holt reported on suburban poverty in America, sharing the shocking and personal
stories of families confronting poverty for the very first time.
Before becoming co-anchor of “Weekend Today,” Holt anchored “Lester Holt Live,” a daily news show on MSNBC in which he
covered breaking news and provided news updates and analysis. Holt has also served as the lead anchor for daytime news and
breaking news coverage on MSNBC. He has served as a primary anchor for MSNBC’s coverage of the biggest news events of the last
several years, including Operation Iraqi Freedom and the war in Afghanistan, and he was the lead daytime anchor for MSNBC’s
coverage of Decision 2000. Holt also served as anchor of “Countdown: Iraq,” a nightly news telecast concentrating on the latest
developments surrounding the war with Iraq, from October 2002 through March 2003.
The award-winning broadcast journalist came to MSNBC from WBBM-TV in Chicago, where he spent 14 years. His duties at
WBBM-TV included anchoring the evening news. Holt not only worked at the anchor desk in Chicago, but he also reported
extensively from trouble spots around the world including Iraq, Northern Ireland, Somalia, El Salvador and Haiti. He has
contributed to the CBS News broadcast “48 Hours,” earning a 1990 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism award for his work on “48 Hours:
No Place Like Home.” In 2010, Holt was part of the “Today” anchor team that won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding
Morning Program.
Previously, Holt worked as a reporter at WCBS-TV in New York City from 1981-82. In 1982 he transferred to sister station KCBSTV (then KNXT) in Los Angeles as a reporter and weekend anchor and returned to WCBS-TV a year later as a reporter and
weekend anchor.
Holt studied government at California State University in Sacramento. He resides in New York City with his wife.

First Amendment Award
RTDNF recognizes exceptional successes made by an individual or organization that has played a significant role in dissemination
of news and information.
2014 Honoree The Associated Press
The AP is one of the largest and most trusted sources of independent newsgathering, supplying a
steady stream of news to its members, international subscribers and commercial customers. AP
is neither privately owned nor government-funded; instead, as a not-for-profit news cooperative
owned by its American newspaper and broadcast members, it can maintain its single-minded
focus on newsgathering and its commitment to the highest standards of objective, accurate
journalism.
AP’s commitment to independent, comprehensive journalism has deep roots. Founded in 1846,
AP has covered all the major news events of the past 165 years, providing high-quality, informed
reporting of everything from wars and elections to championship games and royal weddings.
Today, AP employs the latest technology to collect and distribute content. It is in the process of overhauling its video
and photography content: transitioning to high-definition, expanding its coverage and building a new, flexible, powerful
infrastructure. AP has the industry’s most sophisticated digital photo network; a 24-hour continuously updated online,
multimedia news service; a state-of-the-art television news service; and one of the largest radio networks in the U.S. Its
commercial digital photo archive is one of the world’s largest collections of historical and contemporary imagery. AP Mobile,
the AP’s award-winning news app, has been downloaded over 9 million times since its launch in 2008, and AP has a strong
social media presence, building new connections between AP and its members, customers and consumers.
Since the Pulitzer Prize was established, in 1917, AP has received 51 Pulitzers, including 31 photo Pulitzers.
AP, which is headquartered in New York, operates in more than 280 locations worldwide, including every statehouse in the
U.S. Two-thirds of its staffers are journalists.

Lifetime Achievement Award
This award honors journalists in the electronic media who have distinguished themselves throughout their careers with consistently
outstanding work. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual who routinely demonstrates the highest standards of
excellence and ethics in reporting and producing the news.
2014 Honoree Bill Plante
Bill Plante has been a CBS News White House correspondent during the administrations of Ronald
Reagan (beginning in 1981), Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. During the administration of
the first President Bush, he was CBS News’ State Department correspondent (1989-92). Plante’s reports are seen
regularly on “CBS This Morning,” where he is senior White House correspondent, and the “CBS Evening News
with Scott Pelley.”
Plante has been based in CBS News’ Washington bureau since December 1976. He has covered every
Presidential campaign since 1968. Before his first White House assignment, he covered general and off-year
elections, including the national political conventions. In 1968, he reported on the campaigns of Hubert Humphrey
and Richard Nixon. During the 1972 campaign, Plante’s assignments included covering candidates George
McGovern and Sargent Shriver. In the summer of 1976, he covered Jimmy Carter and then, in the fall, Walter Mondale’s vice presidential
campaign. Plante was a floor reporter at the 1988 Democratic and Republican National Conventions.
During the Reagan presidency, he covered the President’s activities and major overseas trips, including the historic summit meeting in
Moscow with Mikhail Gorbachev. Plante was part of the CBS News team that received a 1986 Emmy Award for coverage of the ReaganGorbachev summit at Reykjavik, Iceland. He also covered Reagan’s 1984 reelection campaign and was part of the CBS News team that won
an Emmy Award for its coverage.
At the State Department, he covered Secretary of State James Baker’s trips to the Middle East, both before and after the Gulf War; the
changing U.S.-Soviet relationship during that period; and the 1991 Middle East peace talks, among many others. He served as anchor of the
“CBS Sunday Night News” (1988-95).
Plante’s reporting has not been restricted to politics, however. He covered the fall of Skylab and Pope John Paul II’s visit to the United States,
both in 1979. Earlier that year, following the Shah’s departure from Iran, Plante reported on the revolution in that country and was one of two
American journalists to cover a revolutionary trial in Teheran. He was the reporter on a 1977 five-part series examining America’s criminal
justice system for the “CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite.”
Plante served as a correspondent in the Chicago bureau (1966-76) after he joined CBS News in June 1964 as a New York-based reporter/
assignment editor. During that time, he served two of his four tours of duty in Vietnam, reporting on the bombing strikes over North Vietnam,
the Vietnamization and pacification programs in the south and the fall of the governments in Vietnam and Cambodia. Plante also covered
the civil rights movement in Mississippi and Alabama, including Dr. Martin Luther King’s historic march from Selma to Montgomery.
Plante’s recent White House coverage includes the first trip by a U.S. President to Myanmar (Burma) by President Obama, in addition to his
trips to Indonesia and Korea. Additionally, he reported on the recent fiscal cliff negotiations, the sex scandal involving Secret Service agents
assigned to protect President Obama while attending a summit in Cartagena, Colombia, and the 40th anniversary of Watergate. Plante also
provided the first-ever look inside the exclusive Washington, D.C. hideaway that serves as a hotel for former presidents and interviewed
astronaut John Glenn on the 50th anniversary of NASA’s launch of Friendship 7.
In addition to his White House coverage, Plante recently returned to Selma, Ala. in March 2012 to cover a commemoration of Dr. Martin
Luther King’s historic march. He also interviewed former astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn on the 50th anniversary of the nation’s first
orbital flight.
He has received many major broadcast journalism awards. In addition to Emmy Awards for his coverage of the death of Princess Diana, the
Reagan-Gorbachev summit and Reagan’s 1984 reelection campaign, he won an Emmy for his investigative report on the U.S.-Soviet wheat
deal broadcast on the “CBS Evening News” (1972). Plante’s international work was recognized with a 1971 Overseas Press Club Award for his
reports on the India-Pakistan War, and a second in 1975 for Best Radio Spot News Reporting for his coverage of the fall of the South Vietnam
and Cambodian governments and evacuation of American personnel.
He was born in Chicago. Plante was graduated from Loyola University in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in humanities, and he studied
political science at Columbia University (1963-64). He and his wife, Robin Smith, an award-winning independent documentary producer,
live in Washington, D.C. Plante has six sons.

a job in the Sports Information Department and since then, started a bi-weekly show called Squawk
Talk that she produces, hosts and edits. She also manages approximately 20 students who film and
commentate the broadcasts for the live varsity game streams on suseagulls.com. She is the president of
the National Broadcasting Society Chapter at Salisbury University and a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the
communications honor society.

“It is an absolute honor to receive the Lou & Carole Prato Sports Reporting Scholarship. When I was hired for the Sports
Information Department at Salisbury University there was only a small amount of digital media. I started the bi-weekly
show called Squawk Talk on the athletic website and I am very excited to be recognized for the hard work I have put
forth, for the past three years. I would like to thank the Prato family and the Radio Television Digital News Foundation
again and look forward to continuing a future in sports reporting.”

fuel this passion further. He intends to continue his education by studying Broadcast Meteorology at
graduate level.
“I am truly honored and humbled to be the recipient of the George Foreman Tribute to Lyndon B. Johnson Scholarship,
and I extend my utmost gratitude to the Radio Television Digital News Foundation for bestowing this honor on me.
My passion lies with weather, and I plan to further my education by studying Broadcast Meteorology at graduate level.
I believe meteorologists are heroes. They provide the public vital, life-saving information during outbreaks of severe
weather, and my goal is to become one of those heroes. This scholarship from the RTDNF will undoubtedly help me on
the path to my goal. I appreciate wholeheartedly this recognition of my hard work.”

Talia was hired as an assignment editor in the news department of KPIX (CBS 5) in San Francisco.
She’s currently the president of her school’s “College Students in Broadcasting” club. Talia was recently
awarded the Steve Davis Memorial Scholarship from the National Academy of Television Arts and

“I wrote my first newspaper article when I was 14 years old. It was featured in my hometown’s local paper, The Sarasota
Herald Tribune. When I saw my own words printed onto those pages for everyone to see, it was a very exciting and
defining moment for me. I realized then that I had the ability to not only influence but educate my peers. It was this
idea that propelled me to choose a career in journalism. I wanted to use my own voice to help those who were unable
to help themselves; whose voices had been silenced. It is priceless knowing that the RTDNA believes in the work that
I am so passionate about. The Pete Wilson Scholarship is a moment in my journey to the top that I will never forget.
Thank you Radio Television Digital News Foundation for this opportunity and for supporting me. I will continue to
work tirelessly to see my goals come to fruition.”

as this pioneer in radio news, but because it allows me the opportunity to receive an international media education at a
time when better understanding one another from an international perspective could not be more important. Because
of this opportunity offered to me by the Radio Television Digital News Association and Mr. George Glazer of the First
Amendment Banquet, I will be closer to my goal of making an impact in the world of ethical journalism. Thank you.”
