Cavaliers Redefining In-Game Entertainment with STATS
Fans who have attended games at Quicken
Loans Arena recently are enjoying neverbefore-seen performance and fitness metrics
that were previously reserved for targeted
scouting and player analysis by stat gurus in
the front-offices of select NBA teams. The
source is a new player tracking technology from
sports information leader STATS called
SportVU.
SportVU, a system of six cameras and STATS’
proprietary software, is in 15 NBA arenas this
season calibrating and measuring both players
and the ball in x and y coordinates. The result is
a continuous stream of ground-breaking statistics based around speed, distance, player
separation and ball possession data that allow
more detailed and targeted analysis of players
and teams – all in real-time.
SportVU graphics and data can depict game intricacies such as the speed of a pass, the arc of a
shot, a player's acceleration and deceleration as well as the distance he actually runs during a
game. The new content is allowing the Cavaliers to enhance in-game entertainment and extend
relationships with existing sponsorship partners along with creating entirely new opportunities with
the corporate community.
The SportVU technology is really next-level stuff that has given our basketball operations team
and fans insight never-before experienced. We recognize that there is an almost infinite amount
of opportunity for our organization to utilize the technology, and we’ve only begun to scratch the
surface of its capabilities, but we’re excited to expand its usage across multiple levels of our
business in the future.
