Sixth Grade Bible Dynamic Christian Living—Positive Action For Christ: Students will apply God’s standards in establishing good Christian living skills and use Bible study aids such as cross-references, concordances, Bible dictionaries, and Bible commentaries. Language Arts Literature: Pearl—Mosdos Press: With an emphasis on literary elements, higher-order thinking skills, and vocabulary enrichment, sixth grade reading is a bridge to the traditional literature classes that begin in middle school. Writer’s Choice Grammar and Composition—Glencoe: Higher level concepts are introduced using language mechanics as they build on the rules of grammar. Math Math: Concepts Course 2– Glencoe: Students will explore and master adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, rational numbers and real numbers, geometry, ratios, proportions, solving algebraic equations, and collecting, organizing, and analyzing data. Science Science—Glencoe: Students will be shown God’s wonderful creation through a study of the earth, cells, organisms, matter and energy, astronomy, heredity, and the nervous and immune systems. This is a one semester course, history completes the other semester. Social Studies Students will study two areas, the geography of God’s incredible planet Earth and the history of North Carolina. This is a one semester course, science will complete the other semester. Electives Middle School students take three electives each year. Sixth grade students have nine weeks and two quarters in each elective. Study Hall Middle School students have a daily study hall period during the school day. Students are expected to use this time productively. Band Students have the opportunity to participate in Band. This class meets during the Study Hall period. Band members participate in the MCA Pep Band, concerts, and festivals. Note: MCA faculty and administration maintain an on-going process of constant review regarding curriculum and materials. Updated 01/13/2012 - src 2 Seventh Grade Bible Route 66—Positive Action For Christ: Students will explore the lives of Old Testament characters. Students will study to gain wisdom and inspiration from the lives of the Patriarchs; Moses and Joshua, the Judges, Ruth, Hannah, Samuel, David, Jonathan, Saul, and Solomon, and selected characters from the Divided Kingdom, the Single Kingdom, and the Captivity. Language Arts Literature: Jade—Mosdos Press: Students will gain skill in reading carefully and critically, writing creatively and clearly, listening actively and imaginatively, speaking clearly and correctly, thinking clearly and critically, and will use language mechanics powerfully. Writer’s Choice Grammar and Composition—Glencoe: Students are exposed to higher level concepts using language mechanics as they continue to build on the rules of grammar. Pre-Algebra Math Concepts Course3 – Glencoe: The knowledge, attitudes, and skills nurtured in Middle School Pre-Algebra will prepare students to grow and succeed in our highly technological world. It will also provide essential problem-solving skills that students can apply to a wide range of scientific disciplines and to everyday life. Science Science – Glencoe: Students will learn to examine, recognize, and appreciate the brilliant order and design of God’s living creation from a Biblical perspective. They will recognize the Bible as the only infallible source of truth, use and understand a scientific approach to problem solving and organize their learning of the atmospheres and the earth, using classification charts. They will also compare the structures and functions of plant and animal cells, understand and explain the structures and functions of the various body systems of animals, and understand current environmental issues from a biblical perspective. History The American Republic – BJU Press: Students will begin an exploration of the history and heritage of the United States of America from a Biblical perspective. Students will trace the events and people who formed this nation from the beginning of our country through the Civil War. Students will also be equipped to examine the successes and failures of our past and to apply these lessons from the earlier years of our nation as they build their futures as Godly individuals and citizens of this nation. Electives Middle School students take three electives each year. Seventh grade students have Art, Computer, and PE, spending one quarter in Art, one quarter in Computer, and one semester in PE. Study Hall Middle School students have a daily study hall period during the later part of the school day. Students are expected to use this time productively. Band Students with a background in instrumental music have the opportunity to participate in Band. This class meets during the Study Hall period. Band members participate in the MCA Pep Band, concerts, and festivals. Note: MCA faculty and administration maintain an on-going process of constant review regarding curriculum and materials. 3 Eighth Grade Bible Wise Up—Positive Action For Christ and A Case for Faith—Zondervan: Students will explore the Proverbs as they seek God’s truths and apply them in their own lives. Students will gain understanding of their personal responsibility to obey the Biblical mandates and become more Christ-like. Students will investigate cultural, historical, and geographical elements that surrounded and impacted His life. Students will do on the site service projects. Language Arts Literature: Gold—Mosdos Press: Students will gain skill in reading carefully and critically. They will write organized and powerful paragraph essays. Writer’s Choice Grammar and Composition—Glencoe: Students will be expected to speak clearly and correctly, think critically, and use language mechanics powerfully. Pre-Algebra & Algebra Pre-Algebra—Glencoe: Middle School Pre-Algebra will prepare students for success in algebra and other secondary mathematics courses, providing students with a basic foundation in algebraic operations and functions, rational numbers, integers, equations with one variable, and inequalities. Algebra I—Glencoe: The knowledge, attitudes, and skills nurtured in Middle School Algebra will provide essential problem-solving skills that students can apply to a wide range of mathematic and scientific disciplines. Middle School Algebra I will review prealgebra skills and provide students a strong foundation in basic algebraic operations, functions, and advanced problem-solving skills. Earth Science Science—Glencoe: Students will begin to develop a personal Biblical perspective of science as a revelation of the person and power of God. They will gain an understanding of planet Earth from a Christian perspective and use the scientific approach to problem solving.
