Tiangge

By Dr. Alice Raganas

O rganizing a tiangge is one of the best fundraising projects by school organizations.

Different delicacies, goods, and artworks are sold in the tiangge at much lower prices. Most school organizations benefit from this project.

Marina and Rod thought of having baked products sale in the gymnasium during the school’s festival. They wanted to place tables end-to-end across the room, each would be 200 centimeters wide and 200 centimeters long. They wanted to know how many tables would fit.

“We can divide to find out,” said Rod as he wrote:

200 1 200

“But remember, I have difficulty in dividing large numbers like this,” said Marina. “I wish the numbers were smaller.

“Don’t worry, I can make them smaller,” said Rod. “And we can do it without changing the answer,” assured Rod.

“Really? How will you do that?” asked Marina.

“The room is 1 200 centimeters wide, right?” asked Rod. “We can also say that it is 12 meters wide and each table is 200 centimeters long, right?

But we can say that it is 2 meters long.”

“So our problem would be, how many 2-meter tables fit into a 12-meter

2 .”

“Now it’s easy,” said Rod.

“The answer is six. That’s how many tables will fit across the room,” said Marina.

“Are you sure of your answer?” asked Marina.

“Why? Are you still confused?” asked Rod.

“Will let us illustrate how we get the answer,” Rod suggested.

Do you see now why 200 1 200 gives the same answer as 12 ?

“Now I’m convinced. 200 1 200 can be changed into 12 both numbers by 100,” Marina claimed.

by dividing

“Come on, Marina. Let’s look for the six tables to be used,” called Rod.

While on their way, Marina thought, “Before doing a division problem that requires an exact answer, divide the divisor and dividend by the same amount. It is usually helpful to make divisor a one-digit number.”
