Avancemos! Program Components
Core Components
Pupil’s Edition
The ¡Avancemos! Pupil Editions consist of 8 units with 2 lessons each as well as a
preliminary lesson. ¡Avancemos! was developed as a result of extensive research with
practicing Spanish teachers from throughout the United States. Based on this research,
¡Avancemos! (a) integrates culture as a cornerstone for meaningful communication; (b)
provides clear goals, careful sequencing, and leveled activities that make practice purposeful;
and (c) provides multiple opportunities for language learning that lasts through frequent and
regular checkpoints within each lesson, as well as at the end of each lesson and unit.
Language retention is further supported with the cumulative review following each unit, and
the frequent recycling of previously-learned material, both within and between levels of the
program.
Teacher’s Edition
The Proyectos adicionales section, before every unit, offers ideas for projects, bulletin Board
displays, games, recipes, and much more. The Lesson Overview, preceding each lesson,
includes culture topics with essential culture questions, lesson objectives with skill focus,
a list of the program resources that accompany the lesson, and listening activity scripts.
The Core Pacing Guide, accompanying every lesson, suggests classroom planning for both
50-minute and 90-minute classes.
Extensive information about how differentiation is provided in the margins with suggestions
for teaching Heritage Language Learners, English Learners, Pre-AP students, Slowerpaced students, Inclusion students, as well as Teaching to the Multiple Intelligences.
Workbooks
Cuaderno: Práctica por niveles
The leveled workbook supplements the Pupil’s Edition and includes activities of three
different ability levels (A-basic, B-average, and C-challenging). Activities include
vocabulary, grammar, and reading practice. (Teacher’s Edition available)
Cuaderno para hispanohablantes
This leveled workbook offers practice for heritage learners of Spanish and includes activities
of three different ability levels (A-basic, B-average, and C-challenging). Activities include

Interactive Spanish Readers
Lecturas para todos, Pupil’s Edition
These interactive readers provide an abundance of additional reading, with support
strategies aimed at increasing reading comprehension. This consumable worktext contains
readings for students to mark up, write in, and make their own, for both in-class and athome use. (Teacher’s Edition available)
Lecturas para hispanohablantes, Pupil’s Edition
These interactive readers offer a rich selection of literary readings for Heritage Learners.
The readers contain the same reading support as the Lecturas para todos - reading
strategies, comprehension questions, tools for developing vocabulary, plus tools for
literary analysis. (Teacher’s Edition available)
Lecturas literarias (Level 4)
Powerful new resources specifically targeted to help native speakers of Spanish, these
interactive readers provide point-of-use support with varied readings from the Spanishspeaking world, test preparation strategies, and focused writing practice.

AvanzaCómics
These motivating comic books are written in a lively, youthful style with full-color
illustrations. Each comic uses the target language students are learning. Teacher support

TPRS: Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling
This is an up-to date guide to TPRS, using the target language taught in each lesson of
¡Avancemos! Written by Piedad Gutiérrez, approved by Blaine Ray. This title is also
included in the Teacher’s Resource Manager

Middle School Resource Book
Practice activities to support the 1b Bridge lesson. Includes Vocabulary, Grammar,
Bridge Warm-up, and Answer Transparencies for student texts. With audio CD.

¡Avancemos! Assessment Resources
Formal Assessment
The ¡Avancemos! Differentiated Assessment Program
There are four test options, each targeted to assessing students with different educational
needs:
1. On-level Assessments assess students’ ability to use the lesson and unit vocabulary and
grammar, as well as assessing culture, reading, writing, listening and speaking.
2. Modified Assessments require students to produce the same level of language, but
provide more explanation, support and scaffolding.
3. Pre-AP Assessments build the test-taking skills essential to success on
Advanced Placement tests.
4. Heritage Learner Assessments are all in Spanish, and take into account the strengths
that native speakers bring to language learning.

Multiple Choice Test Items
The Test Generator CD-ROM has 20 additional multiple-choice questions per lesson. These
are above and beyond the printed Differentiated Assessment Program.
Portfolio Assessment features speaking, writing, and projects paired with holistic scoring
tools for each assignment.
¡Avancemos! Assessment Technology
The Test Generator CD-ROM allows teachers to print pre-made tests or create their own
from a bank of editable, downloadable test items correlated to state standards. Includes the
entire bank of test questions included in the Differentiated Assessment Program, plus 20
additional multiple-choice items per lesson.
McDougal Littell Assessment System: This is a skills-based system that helps teachers test,
score, and track students’ results. The McDougal Littell Assessment System provides readymade materials for re-teaching and remediation. The scannable tests and answer sheets can be
printed on plain paper.

This fun and interactive CD-ROM provides three levels of practice that students can do at
home with immediate feedback and reteaching support. The CD-ROM includes animated
grammar, video clips, audio recording capability, audio flashcards, review games, and
self-check exercises to reinforce reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills.
Test Generator CD-ROM (see Assessment page)
For each level of the program the Test Generator includes the entire bank of test
questions, plus twenty additional multiple choice items per lesson.
McDougal Littell Assessment System

¡Avancemos! Video Program (on DVD)
An extensive, multi-faceted video program filmed throughout the Spanish-speaking world
to fully support the culture and language presented in each lesson of ¡Avancemos!
Levels 1 and 2 include vocabulary presentation video, entertaining, ongoing
Telehistorias, and Comparación cultural video. An additional video program, El gran
desafío, begins in Level 2 and extends into Level 3. This Telly Award Winning reality
TV style challenge will keep students engaged.
Audio CD Program
Provides ample audio support for the student textbook, workbook, Assessment Program,
Heritage Learners, and Lecturas para todos Interactive Readers. Level 1=21 CDs; Level
2= 22 CDs; Level 3= 33 CDs. Also avilable for download in an iPod/MP3 player
compatible format.
Sing-Along Grammar & Vocabulary Songs Audio CD and Booklet
The audio CD comes with a complete set of lyrics and sheet music. Songs reinforce the
target language taught in each lesson.
Classzone.com Teacher Resources include links to teacher Web sites and professional
resources (FLTEACH, ACTFL, etc.), state correlations, downloadable workbook and
reader pages, and pdf only components such as AvanzaCómics support.
Música del mundo hispano Audio CD
Authentic music from around the Spanish-speaking world includes genres that match the
Música Cultural Mini Lessons in ¡Avancemos! Level 2. Lyrics included in the liner
