INTRODUCTION
Spain is a world leader in the railway industry and has one of the most successful HSR
systems in the world. HSR has changed the way we travel and do business.
I will focus my remarks on recent developments in three areas:
-The network
-The financing: increasing role of P3
-The operation of the service
But I will start by summarizing Spain s experience to date

Investment in infrastructure has responded to the strategic decision of placing passenger
and freight rail as a key mode of transportation.
From 2001-2011 rail has absorbed 48% of the total investment in

Moreover, Spain has made HSR part of an interconnected mobility system
People not only want to get to their destination faster but they want to have timely
access to the city center.
We have brought into service new metro systems and commuter rail lines
29 Stations are already integrated in the HS network

AS HSR HAS GROWN, SO HAS THE SPANISH COMPANIES´
EXPERTISE: THEY ARE NOW WORLD LEADERS IN HSR
Signalling: Spain has set up ERTMS in 1,809 km of High Speed lines (almost half of the total in Europe; and more
km than any other European country). 7 years of experience in rail Interoperability. This system has been set up in
Córdoba-Malaga; Madrid-Valladolid, Madrid-Valencia/Albacete; and Ourense-Santiago.
The Spanish Da Vinci System integrates all telecommands in the HSL allowing a centralized real time operation

IV. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS ON THE OPERATION
LIBERALIZATION OF THE OPERATION ON THE PASSENGER MARKET AS
OF JULY 2013
RENFE already operates in competition with others in the freight market.
15% of the fright traffic is already operated by operators different to RENFE.
