This book was originally entitled PROBLEMS OF THE BOOK OF MORMON and
was first published in 1964. This new edition is revised and enlarged and contains
some articles that were not in the first printing. The publishers feel that the original title
carried a negative connotation but that the material is of such importance that it merits
printing under the new title of ANSWERS TO BOOK OF MORMON QUESTIONS.
This work from the scholarly pen of Dr. Sidney B. Sperry, professor of Old
Testament languages and literature at Brigham Young University, is a careful selection
of questions raised by Latter-day Saints about doctrinal matters, interpretation of text
and other technical items. Many questions originating from unfriendly critics in their
efforts to discredit the Nephite record are candidly and openly discussed. The resulting
study will be useful and interesting to all Church members, but especially so to the
missionaries and teachers who are often confronted with difficult questions.
Five chapters of this book are devoted to answering Aurthur Budvarson’s attack
on the Book of Mormon in his THE BOOK OF MORMON – TRUE OR FALSE? Also
included are chapters pertaining to quotations from Shakespeare found in the Book of
Mormon; the knotty Isaiah problem; New Testament quotations; the use of domestic
animals by the Book of Mormon peoples; and many others.
The author has spent considerable time in preparing the manuscript for
publication. Readers will find ANSWERS TO BOOK OF MORMON QUESTIONS a
significant contribution to the field of L.D.S. literature and an invaluable reference for
the Book of Mormon.
