Social Studies is the program that examines how our societies function. What makes them work...what makes them fail and how we, historically, have responded to that. 49 Social Studies Program With permission from the department, a student may move between streams. eg. Both course sequences are designed to further the student s understanding of history, geography, and economic, political and global issues. Social Studies 10-1AP is designed for students who have a particular interest in history and social issues and leads into the Social Studies 20-1AP 30-1AP programs. All students are required to complete either Social Studies 30-1 or 30-2 in order to obtain a High School Diploma. 50 Grade 10 students who receive a mark below 45% in Social Studies 10-1 should take Social Studies 10-2/20-2/30-2. Students whose marks are between 45%-49% in Social Studies 10-1 should register in Social Studies 20-2. Retroactive credits for Social Studies 10-2 would then be earned upon successful completion of Social Studies 20-2. Grade 11 students who receive a mark below 45% in Social Studies 20-1 should take Social Studies 20-2 followed by Social Studies 30-2. Students whose marks are between 45% 49% in Social Studies 20-1 should register in Social Studies 30-2. Retroactive credits would be earned for Social Studies 20-2 upon successful completion of Social 30-2. Students who receive a mark of 70% or more in Social 30-2 may enrol in Social 30-1. Due to emphasis on essay writing in Social 30-1, it is recommended that students successfully complete English 20-1 prior to registering in Social Studies 30-1. Both Social Studies 30-1 and 30-2 are diploma examination courses. Social Studies 30-1AP students will write the Social Studies 30-1 diploma examination and the European History Advanced Placement examination. The Social Studies 10-1/20-1/30-1 sequence is intended for students with strong skills in reading, writing, and analysis of issues. Social Studies 30-1 is accepted as an entrance course for university programs. The Advanced Placement Social Studies 10-1/20-1/30-1 sequence is intended for students who enjoy Social Studies and are interested in the wide-ranging topics a history course provides. Although priority will be given to students who have completed the Grade 10 Social Studies AP preparation class, interested students who have successfully completed Social Studies 10-1 may see the Social Studies Department Head to discuss taking Social Studies 20-1AP. Social Studies 10-1AP (5 Credits) Note: All Advanced Placement students must enroll in 8 credits of Social Studies at the grade 11 level. (Social Studies 20-1AP and European History 25AP). Social Studies 10-2 (5 Credits) Students will explore historical aspects of globalization and its effects on lands, cultures, human rights and quality of life. The infusion of multiple perspectives will allow students to examine the effects of globalization on peoples in Canada and other locations, including the impact on Aboriginal and Francophone communities. Social Studies 10-1 (5 Credits) The Social Studies 10-2/20-2/30-2 This course is an exploration sequence focuses on many of the same issues and events as the 10-1/20-1/30-1 continuum; however, the reading and writing requirements and depth of study are less intensive. Social Studies 30-2 is accepted as an entrance of the origin of globalization and its social, economic and political impact. The infusion of multiple perspectives will allow students to examine the effects of globalization on peoples in Canada and throughout the world, Social Studies 10-1AP is an introductory course to Advanced Placement European History. Although this course focuses primarily on the same curriculum as 10-1, the Social 10-1AP program will expose students to historical documents and encourage discussion and analysis which will help to prepare students for Social 201AP and European History 25. Social Studies 20-2 (5 Credits) Students will examine historical and contemporary understandings of nationalism in Canada and the world. They will explore the origins of nationalism as well as the impacts of nationalism on individuals and communities in Canada and other locations. Examples of nationalism, ultranationalism, supranationalism and internationalism will be examined from multiple perspectives. Students will develop personal and civic responses to emergent issues related to nationalism. Social Studies 20-1 (5 Credits) Students will explore the complexities of nationalism in Canadian and international contexts. They will study the origins of nationalism and the regional, international and global relations. The infusion of multiple perspectives will allow students to develop understandings of nationalism and how nationalism contributes to the citizenship and 51 identities of people in Canada. European History 25AP (3 Credits) Students will study the basic political, cultural, and religious events and movements that occurred in Europe during the time period from approximately 1450 - 1750. Note: All students enrolled in Social Studies 20-1AP are required to register in this course. semester while 20-1AP will be in second semester. Social Studies 20-1AP (5 Credits) Social Studies 30-1 (5 Credits) Students will explore the origins and complexities of ideologies and examine multiple perspectives regarding the principles of classical and modern liberalism. An analysis of various political and economic systems will allow students to assess the viability of the principles of liberalism. Developing understandings of the roles and responsibilities associated with citizenship will encourage students to respond to emergent global issues. Developing understandings of the roles and responsibilities associated with citizenship will encourage students to respond to emergent global issues. 52 Social Science Options Personal Psychology 20 (3 Credits) This introductory course in the students with insight into the following topics: human development, understanding personality, principles of learning, the process of thinking, perception, emotions, and motives, facing frustration disturbances. World Religions 30 (3 Credits) World Religions 30 explores the meaning and development of religion. It will discuss how religions are created and the role they serve in societies. The main emphasis of the course will be an examination of the major religions in the world today. The focus will be on the history and basic beliefs and practices of each religion.
