French Language Arts (FLA) 10-1, 20-1, 30-1/30-2* (5 credits each)
Prerequisite: French Language Arts 9/Français 9
The French Language Arts program of studies aims to develop the students’ ability to think critically and
analytically so that they react appropriately to the contents and techniques of what they read or view. Viewing
and analyzing media helps students cultivate an appreciation of the cultural reality of the Canadian and
international “Francophonies”. FLA is designed to meet the French language learning needs of French
Immersion students and to help students to strengthen knowledge and strategies in oral communication, reading
and writing, and also to be prepared for post-secondary studies and the workplace.
Each year students will review and perfect previous grammar knowledge, as well as develop a stronger command
of the language by learning new vocabulary and grammatical concepts. Students will be exposed to a variety of
literary genres including novels, plays, films, short stories and poetry, which will help in reading comprehension
and language development. In all three levels, students will be prepared for the written and reading components of
the grade 12 diploma exam. *Note: FLA 30-2 is not a course option. After the first report card, students with a
mark lower than 65% will be recommended to write the 30-2 in- school exam. (There are NO FLA 30-2
diploma exams)
