Approved Formats for “Community Text”"
!
You may choose any one of the 3 following formats to use to complete this writing assignment. !
!
1. Narrative"
This is a fiction or non-fiction story that includes the elements of plot (exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling, action,
and resolution in this or some variable order); descriptive language; dialogue; and a theme (a moral or message of the story)
that reflects how you feel about the community you belong to. You must also include your personal definition of community—
though how you choose to incorporate it is up to you. It should be 1-3 typed pages (single-spaced). You may choose to use
1st or 3rd person point of view in your writing.!
!
2. Poem"
This can be free-verse (non-rhyming) or verse (rhyming). It should be 24 lines long, split into stanzas—however you choose
to separate them—(the stanzas should follow the same rules as paragraphs—except for the indenting). Although this form
has more freedom regarding how you choose to present content it should clearly reflect your personal definition of
community; portray the community you are a part of; and include quotations from the interview you conducted with a fellow
community-member. !
!
3. Photo Essay"
!This will take the form of a more traditional 5-paragraph essay but each paragraph should be preceded by a photo or photocollage (preferably with pictures taken by you) to visually represent the main idea of the paragraph—i.e. if you have an
introductory paragraph that describes your community (the geographical location, people, places, and other facets that make
up your community) you might include a google earth screenshot of Springfield, a picture of your street, or a picture of people
in your community interacting. This essay must also include some of the quotations you collected in your interview to support
your response to the writing prompt. The thesis statement of your essay might read: My personal definition of community is
…. this is reflected in the community I am a part of when I look at …(name 3 different facets of your community). You may use
1st person in this essay—in fact it is recommended. !
