Mental Math Project
PreAP/GT 6 Math – Mrs. Turner
You will be creating your very own mental math book that will be displayed
in the classroom and shared with other math classes at Beckendorff JH!
Requirements:
-You must create 10 mental math problems and list their correct answer.
-Each problem should have at least 10 steps. (You will not get extra credit
for making more than 10 steps, so there is no need to!)
-Each problem should include all 4 operations (meaning at least once you
must add, subtract, multiply, and divide), and also try to use other math
skills, like squaring a number, and finding a square root.
-Each problem should include at least one negative number in the
problem or as your answer.
-Each problem should include 3 everyday math buzzwords that represent
numbers (ex: dozen=12, sides on a pentagon=5, start with the product of 6
x 8). These should be in bold so it is clear to me where your 3
buzzwords/phrases are.
-Problems must be numbered and typed in an easily legible 12 point font.
Refer to the example below. Be creative, but don’t make them so hard
that you would not be able to quickly compute the work in your head!
Example:
1.
Start with the number of feet in a yard
Double the number
Divide by 6
Multiply by -1
Plus 8
Times the number in a pair
Add the number of sides on a quadrilateral
Subtract 3
Divide by 3
Square the number
Answer: 25

Projects should be turned in with a clear project cover sheet on it or
spiral bound. Please list your name, Mental Math Project, and class
period on a cover page.
Projects are due on Friday, May 9th. No late work will be accepted!
This will count as a test grade for the 6th 6 Weeks.
It is optional – there is no penalty against you for not doing this
project!
