THE SOUTH AMBOY • • • * SAYREVILLE Date: April 5,1993 TIM FREE Frog Hollow News Dr. Novembre South Amboy Moves to Leadership Role Lee Iococca said it best when he said, "In the automobile business, you either lead, follow or get out of the way". Dr. Anthony Novembre, Superintendent of Schools for South Amboy Public Schools, has applied those words to Education: "In the Education business, you either lead, follow or get out of the way." The concept of a Community School has launched South Amboy to the forefront of the education business. South Amboy has come from the past into the present and moving into the future as the "Leader" of the Community School Concept. Other districts will follow or they will get out of the way. Dr. Novembre projects early cost estimates for the new Community School to be between $10 to $12 million. The actual Net cost to the taxpayers will be offset by the increased state aid and other savings as noted below: 1. State Aid 28% of the total amount of the project. 2. $90,000 a year savings by eliminating the need for busing to Selover School in Sayreville. 3. Return of Special Education Classes to South Amboy realize savings of $200,000$250,000. Dr. Novembre indicated that the State is making available low interest loans of l'/2% for 50% of the total cost. This money is contingent upon the voters approving the School Referendum scheduled for May 18, 1993. Let's invest in the future of our children and support the referendum. Joanne Niestempski Health conscious individuals; 1 would like lo beg five minutes of your time. Do you realize that the Food And Drug Administration (FDA) is working overtime to classify vitamins, minerals, ami no acids, and herbs as prescription drugs. The Food And Drug Administration assumes that individuals do not possess the expert knowledge required lo make sound personal decisions regarding their and their families personal health, particularly if such decisions are outside of what is judged lo be medically sound by ih American Medical Association and the Food And Drug Administration. Ibis group of people, employed by you and 1, believes that when a supplement improves human physiological functioning (improves health) the supplement becomes a "drug". Amazing as it may sound, the FDA in May Of 1992, arms-drawn, raided the health clinic o\ Jonathan Wright M.D. of Tacoma. Washington. His office records and supplements were confiscated and staff terrorized by twelve FDA agents and ten Kent County policeman. A medical doctor was dispensing vitamin and mineral supplements to his patients. Here the FDA had played the role of common thugs. There seems to be a link between the LTryptophan scare a few years ago and what the FDA is attempting lo do now. L-Trypiophan, an amino acid found in turkey, milk, and other foods, has been used by literally millions of people in the United States and around the world as an aid in dieting, to relieve insomnia, and to relieve tension. L-Tryptophan was taken off the market because the product was contaminated by one Japanese company due to a faulty laboratory filtration procedure. All contaminated L-Tryptophan was removed and yet the FDA still refuses to allow this amino acid to be sold. Reflect back for one minute. How many times have you taken a legal prescription drug prescribed by a physician and experienced the side effects of that drug. You probably experienced side effects worse than the cure. There arc no known side effects when taking vitamin and mineral supplements, as long as they are not taken in excess. These same vitamins and minerals arc found in the food that we cat. If the Food And Drug Administration is so vehement on taking something off the market let them consider the food additives, colorings, and preservatives that we consume every day. More has been written concerning the harm they cause than the good that they do. J.M. Broadway • south ArhboyJ 721-681 A nniversary WAMTWn All About Pets By Virginia Stiilwagon There are 20 million abandoned pets in America today. They have been thrown out of their homes - left on the side of the road, in an alley or turned in to an animal shelter - simply because that owner does not want the responsibility of caring. These animals arc doomed to a short and brutal life. The shame of it is that these animals should not have been born in the first place. There are more than 10 times as many dos and cats born in America than there are homes willing to take them in. About 3000 kittens and puppies are born every hour. While you are reading this 50 dogs and cats have been born. Of the 50. only 5 will find permanent, loving homes. The rest will be given away or abandoned, and most will be destroyed. One unspayed female dog and her descendants can produce 4,325 puppies in just 7 generations. One unspayed cat and her offspring can produce 80 million kittens in 10 years It happens when an irresponsible pet owner lets an unneutered male or unspayed female roam the neighborhood at will, when parents want their children to witness "the miracle of birth", or they think it will make the pet lazy and fat. (Food, not surgery, makes animals fat.) It is not mean or cruel to spay or neuter a pet. Animals do not miss having a sex life or parenthood. They do desire food, a home and affection, luxuries that unwanted animals are deprived of. You can save money by getting it done through Friends of Animals, and if you participate in one or more of the state programs such as food stamps, supplemental social security, medicaid, welfare, PAAD, etc. Any information you tell me is confidential. Fishing Flashes By Teo "Weebles" Weber Fresh Water Pre-Trout season fishing is now closed until Opening Day April 10 at 8a.m. Ice is melting from lakes, and ice fishing will soon be over. Shad will be ascending the Delaware River soon, as they are now in Delaware Bay. Walleye fishing will start as soon as they spawn. Salt Water Cold water and snow runoff have slowed fishing on all inshore wrecks. Offshore wrecks in 150 feet of water are yielding a pick of Ling, Cod,Pollack, and Blackfish. River & Bay Flounder fishing is poor due to the weather. If waters warm up soon expect brief flurries of action, but the overall outlook is not good, due too much fishing pressure. Mackeral are off the Carolinas at present-expect action in midApril. Obituaries Denarski, Leon T. "Louie", 67, of Morgan died March 25. Good, Charles, of Parlin died March 27. Kibbler, Mary G.
