Take time to meet with an advisor from your
major during your first semester
Welcome to Nassau Community College!
Our Academic Advisement Center advisors have developed this Advisement and Registration
Guide to assist you with your transition to Nassau Community College.
 WHAT’S HAPPENING TODAY?
You will:
 Talk with an advisor about recommended courses for your first term.
 Register for your courses using the MyNCC Portal.
IMPORTANT: Enrollment is not complete until your tuition and fees are PAID. Please see
the section on “Payment” on page 2.
Your course recommendations are based on:
 Your intended major
 The results of your placement tests
o If your placement results indicate a need to improve your math, reading and/or
English writing skills, you must enroll for the appropriate remedial/developmental
courses as part of your first term’s program.
 Placing into a remedial/developmental course may restrict you from
enrolling in certain credit-level courses.
o An advisor will recommend additional credit-level courses to add to your program.
 Please note: If you wish to enroll in MAT 111, 112 or 122, you must take
the College Level Math (CLM) test, unless you have transfer credit for the
appropriate prerequisite course.
o NCC 101, a one-credit College Experience seminar, will be added to your program
if you place into two or more of the following remedial courses: ENG 001, RDG
001, RDG 002, MAT 001, MAT 002.
o See pages 8-9 for more information about remedial/developmental courses.
 Your preference for full-time or part-time study
o Full-time study is enrollment in 12-17 credits/credit equivalents.
o Part-time study is enrollment in 11.5 credits/credit equivalents or less.
 Financial Aid status
o Financial Aid recipients are responsible for checking that their selected schedule of
courses will be covered by their award. For more details, using the MyNCC Portal,
go to the My Financial Aid link on the LAUNCHPAD or speak with a Financial Aid
representative.
 Previous College Credit or Advanced Placement
o Transfer credits from another college or from AP classes and/or college-level
courses taken in high school should appear on your NCC transcript.
o If you expected transfer credits but they do not appear on your transcript, be
sure to tell the advisor. Only credit courses in which you have earned a “C” or
better are eligible for transfer; non-credit courses are not transferable. Avoid
enrolling in courses at NCC for which you have already earned credit elsewhere.

 WHAT HAPPENS BETWEEN NOW AND THE START OF CLASSES?

Payment and financial aid
o Bills are due on a rolling basis, based on when you register. For those students
who register on or before December 27, 2015, bills will be mailed and become
available for viewing in the MyNCC Portal under the Your Finances link on the
LAUNCHPAD in mid/late December. The due date is about 10-15 days after the bill
is issued.
o For those students who register on or after December 28, 2015, more immediate
payment will be required and no tuition bill will be mailed.
o You are not officially enrolled until payment is made or your financial aid has
been processed. The financial aid you have been awarded must be enough to
cover your charges and must be applied to your bill at the time tuition is due.
Any balance due is your responsibility and must be paid by the due date.
o BE SURE TO PAY BY THE DUE DATE OR YOUR CLASSES WILL BE CANCELLED.
Re-registration opportunities are limited.
o Apply for Financial Aid NOW! Using the MyNCC Portal, go to the My Financial Aid
link on the LAUNCHPAD.
o Don’t have all the money when your bill is due? If you cannot pay the full tuition
or if your financial aid process is not yet complete, you can set up a payment plan
and pay the first third of the tuition and the payment plan fee to avoid having your
classes dropped.

If you have questions specific to your degree program
o Speak to an advisor in the department of your major. Check pages 6-7 for your
department’s contact information.
Note:
 ESL students should visit the Academic Advisement Center in Building U for
assistance, 516-572-7436. See www.ncc.edu/advisement for hours.
 Basic Education Program (BEP) students should contact the Department of
Reading and Basic Education in North Hall, Room 205, 516-572-7464.

If you want to make changes to your schedule
o If you simply wish to change the times that your courses meet, make those
changes according to your preference and class availability.
o If you wish to change the courses you are enrolled in and are unsure about
appropriate alternatives, it is recommended that you do so in consultation with an
advisor from your major. See pages 6-7 for your department’s contact information.
o If you are having technical difficulty with the MyNCC Portal, you can contact the
helpdesk at 516-572-9980, Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Get acquainted with the campus: Attend Orientation
o Watch for your orientation invitation to come by regular mail and email.
o Get to know other students.
o Familiarize yourself with the campus.
o Learn about academics and student life at NCC.


Classes begin
o Be sure to review your schedule and check the days, times and locations of your
classes. Take special note of whether your classes meet in the a.m. or p.m.
o Arrive here at least ½ hour before each class during the first week. The campus is

o Day, Evening and Distance Education classes start January 19, 2016. Weekend
classes begin January 22, 2016.

If you wish to change your schedule once classes have started
o Add or Drop Day, Evening, Weekend and Distance Education classes until:

Withdrawing From Classes: Procedures and Impact on Grades
 If you are registered for a course and stop attending without following the
official withdrawal procedure, it will be treated as an unofficial withdrawal,
resulting in a grade of “UW”. Grades of “UW” are included in calculating
the GPA and count as an “F”.
 From the beginning of the fourth week until the end of the ninth week of
classes, you are guaranteed permission to officially withdraw from a creditbearing course. To do so, you must submit a withdrawal form, signed by
your professor, to the Registrar’s Office, C-Cluster, 1st floor. A “W”
(Withdrawal) will appear on your transcript and is not calculated in your
Grade Point Average (GPA), but can impact your Academic Standing and
Financial Aid.
Note: You cannot withdraw from remedial/developmental courses.
 After the ninth week of the term, an official withdrawal is still permitted if
the professor will allow it.
 You may wish to talk with an advisor and/or financial aid counselor about
the impact of withdrawing from a course before doing so.
 If you register for a course and never attend, you will be given a grade of
“NA” (Never Attended). This grade is not calculated in your GPA but, like
the “W” grade, can impact your Financial Aid.
 HOW DO I INCREASE MY CHANCES OF SUCCESS DURING MY FIRST TERM?
Whether you are a student who is entering college for the first time, or you are a transfer
student making a new start at Nassau Community College, the transition period can be
challenging. Fortunately, the services you need to be a successful student are readily available.

Having difficulty in your classes? Discuss it with someone!
o Talk to your professor. S/he is the first contact you should make if you are having
trouble in a class.
o Visit extra help centers like the Writing Center in Bradley Hall or the Math Center
in B-130. In addition, many academic departments have extra help centers
available – ask about them!
o Attend Academic Success workshops offered by the Center for Educational and
Retention Counseling in Nassau Hall, room 19. Knowing how to take notes, study
for tests and manage your time are important skills to develop.
o Visit with an advisor for your major; see pages 6-7 for a listing of advisement
locations.

Need help with personal issues? Psychological counseling is located in Nassau Hall,
room 9. Want to get a better idea of your direction? Consider visiting the Career
Counseling Center in Nassau Hall, room 14 or Transfer Office in Nassau Hall, room 4.
5

Have to work to help pay for school? Need childcare? Are you a Veteran or adult student
with specific needs that may be different from your classmates’? For detailed information
about campus support services available for the various needs you may be experiencing,
visit the NCC Website via the MyNCC Portal and click on Campus Services.
 HOW DO I GET READY FOR MY SECOND TERM?

Learn your degree requirements
Your degree requirements can be found on the college web site:
o In the MyNCC Portal, click on College Catalog
Click on Programs of Study
and select your program to review
o Liberal Arts students should review the Master Academic Plan (MAP) booklet
given to you at your advisement and registration session. It may also be viewed
on our webpage at www.ncc.edu/masteracademicplan
o Using the MyNCC Portal, students in all majors can review their Degree
Evaluation in the My Records link on the LAUNCHPAD.

Read course descriptions in the on-line college catalog
o In the MyNCC Portal, click on College Catalog and view descriptions by either
of these methods:
 Click on Course Descriptions to use the Course Search tool
 Click on Course Descriptions Only under Printable Versions

Seek academic advisement
Advisement isn’t only to prepare for registration. Take time to meet with an advisor for
your program. Work together to develop your academic plans, discuss academic concerns
and strategies for success or to clarify academic policies. If necessary, an advisor can refer
you to other campus resources.

Register for classes
You are eligible to register for your next term according to established priority dates
beginning in April. The more credits you have already earned, the earlier you can register.
Current students have priority over new incoming students, so even if you are in the last
priority group, you should register as soon as you are eligible to take advantage of the
greatest availability of open courses and class times. Waiting too long means registering
for what’s left! Your tuition bill will not be due until after the Spring 2016 term ends.

Be sure your bill is paid on time!

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT REMEDIAL AND
DEVELOPMENTAL REQUIREMENTS AT NCC?
Remedial and/or developmental courses are a condition of your acceptance and must be taken during your first
semester of attendance. If you place into two or more remedial courses (except ESL courses) you must also enroll in
NCC 101. After three unsuccessful attempts in the same remedial or developmental course, you will be dismissed from
the college. For details about these policies and how you can regain admission to the college, if dismissed, please
review the College Catalog link in the MyNCC Portal.

*RDG 003: If you placed into no more than two remedial courses, one of which is RDG 001, you have the option of
taking RDG 003#. This course is a combination of RDG 001 and RDG 002 and requires additional class time. Enrolling
in RDG 003 provides the opportunity to complete the reading remedial requirement in a single semester. An
Academic Advisor can help you decide whether this course may be appropriate for you.
#
Students enrolled in RDG 001 or RDG 003 will be retested in class during the first week of school. If your placement improves as a result of the retest, it is your responsibility to register for the next appropriate placement level.
**MAT 003: If you placed into MAT 001, you have the option of taking MAT 003. This course is a combination
of MAT 001 and MAT 002 and requires additional class time. Enrolling in MAT 003 gives you the opportunity to
complete the math remedial requirement in a single semester. An Academic Advisor can help you decide whether
this course is appropriate for you.
NON-CREDIT COURSES COUNT TOWARDS FULL-TIME ENROLLMENT
All remedial/developmental courses are non-credit but count as hours for full-time enrollment, billing,
financial aid and health/dental insurance purposes (if applicable).
Example: ENG 001 is a non-credit course but is the equivalent of 3 credits.

Course Number in the box below
 To search for a course with a specific attribute: In the Attribute Type box, highlight the desired attribute (ex.
Literature)
 To search for a course in a specific session: In the Session box, highlight Day, Evening, Friday Evening, Online,
Telecourse or Weekend, if you have a preference. If All is highlighted, all sections will display.
Step 8: Click on Section Search to search for a class.
 If there is a C on the left hand side, it means the class is CLOSED.
 If there is a Box on the left hand side, it means the class is OPEN. HOWEVER, there may be a WAIT LIST for the class.
To see if a class is waitlisted, look at the WL Act column at the top of the screen. If any number other than 0
appears under WL Act, there is a wait list. If you wish to waitlist, see instructions below.*
Step 9: Click on the Box for the class you want to select. Use the schedule grid to track the days and times of the selected
course. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the Register button. If the registration was successful, you will see
*Registered on the Web* and the class you selected will appear. If you receive a Registration Add Error message, it means
you were unable to enroll in the class. Check the back of this sheet for explanations; you must choose a different class
section.
Step 10: Click on Class Search to search for your next class.
*WAITLIST
To waitlist for a class, type the CRN into the worksheet at the bottom of the Add or Drop Classes screen. Click on Submit
Changes. Under Action, use the drop-down arrow and highlight Wait Listed. Click on Submit Changes again.
NOTE: Wait-listing does not guarantee a seat in the class! Register for an alternate class and use the waitlist as your backup
plan. If a seat becomes available, you will be notified via your NCC student email account. You have 24 hours from the time
the email was delivered to go back to the Add or Drop Classes screen and register for the class. Failure to act within the time
limit removes you from the waitlist.
