A Publication of the Academic Advisement Center
7/30/14
Welcome to Nassau Community College!
Our Academic Advisement Center advisors have developed this Advisement and Registration
Guide to assist you with your transition to Nassau Community College.
 WHAT’S HAPPENING TODAY?
You will:
 Talk with an advisor about recommended courses for your first semester.
 Register for your courses using MyNCC, the college’s online student information system.
 Print a copy of your fall courses and schedule as your registration receipt.
IMPORTANT: Enrollment is not complete until your tuition and fees are PAID. Please see
the section on “Payment” on page 2.
Your course recommendations are based on:
 Your intended major
 The results of your placement tests
o If your placement results indicate a need to improve your math, reading and/or
English writing skills, you must enroll for the appropriate remedial/developmental
courses as part of your first semester’s program.
 Placing into a remedial/developmental course may restrict you from
enrolling in certain credit-level courses.
o An advisor will recommend additional credit-level courses to add to your program.
 Please note: If you wish to enroll in MAT 111, 112 or 122, you must take
the College Level Math (CLM) test, unless you have transfer credit for the
appropriate prerequisite courses.
o NCC 101, a one-credit Freshman Seminar, will be added to your program if you
place into two or more of the following remedial courses: ENG 001, RDG 001, RDG
002, MAT 001, MAT 002.
o See pages 8-9 for more information about remedial/developmental courses.
 Your preference for full-time or part-time study
o Full-time study is enrollment in 12-17 credits/credit equivalents.
o Part-time study is enrollment in 11.5 credits/credit equivalents or less.
 Financial Aid status
o Financial Aid recipients are responsible for checking that their selected schedule of
courses will be covered by their award. For more details, check your MyNCC
account or speak with a Financial Aid representative.
 Previous College Credit or Advanced Placement
o Transfer credits from another college or from AP/IB classes and/or college-level
courses taken in high school should appear on your NCC transcript.
o If you expected transfer credits but they do not appear on your transcript, be
sure to tell the advisor. Avoid enrolling in courses at NCC for which you have
already earned credit elsewhere. Only credit courses in which you have earned a
“C” or better are eligible for transfer. Non-credit courses are not transferable.
 WHAT HAPPENS BETWEEN NOW AND THE START OF CLASSES?








Beginning August 4th: PAYMENT MUST BE MADE BY THE END OF THE NEXT BUSINESS
DAY AFTER INITIAL REGISTRATION OR YOUR CLASSES WILL BE CANCELLED!!
You are not officially enrolled until payment is made.
If you are a Financial Aid recipient, your financial aid award must be applied to your bill
by the time tuition is due and must be enough to cover your charges. If there is a balance
due after your Financial Aid has been applied, you must pay the balance or set up a
payment plan (if eligible) to avoid cancellation (see below).
You can pay online at www.ncc.edu/myncc or in-person at the Office of the Bursar,
C Cluster, 1st floor. Please see www.ncc.edu/campusservices/servicehours.shtml for
hours of operations.
Don’t have all the money when your bill is due? If you cannot pay the full tuition or if
your financial aid process is not yet complete, set up a PAYMENT PLAN and pay the first
1/3 of the tuition to avoid having your classes dropped.
If you have questions specific to your degree program
o Speak to an advisor in the department of your major. Check pages 6-7 for your
department’s contact information.
Note:
 ESL students should visit the Academic Advisement Center in Building U for
assistance, 516-572-7436. See www.ncc.edu/advisement for hours.
 Basic Education Program (BEP) students should contact the Department of
Reading and Basic Education in North Hall, Room 205,
516-572-7464.
If you want to make changes to your schedule
o If you need a tutorial or refresher on how to use MyNCC, view the tutorials
available on the web. Go to: http://www.ncc.edu/myncc and click on “MyNCC
Video Tutorials.”
o If you simply wish to change the times that your courses meet, make those
changes according to your preference and class availability.
o If you wish to change the courses you are enrolled in and are unsure about
appropriate alternatives, it is recommended that you do so in consultation with an
advisor from your major. See pages 6-7 for your department’s contact information.
o If you are having technical difficulty with MyNCC, you can contact the MyNCC
helpdesk at 516-572-9980.
Get acquainted with the campus: Attend Orientation
o Watch for your orientation invitation to come by regular mail and email.
o Get to know other students.

locations for your classes and the easiest route from one class to the next.
Check out the campus bookstore
o Visit the website to see if you can pre-order books for your courses.
 Go to www.ncc.edu
 Click on Campus Services
 Click on Bookstore
Keep up with the latest news at NCC
o Check the website occasionally at www.ncc.edu for pertinent information.
o Check your NCC email daily.
o “Like” our Official NCC Facebook page.
 HOW DO I GET OFF TO A GOOD START?

Classes begin
o Be sure to review your schedule and check the days, times and locations of your
classes. Take special note of whether your classes meet in the a.m. or p.m.
o Arrive here at least ½ hour before each class during the first week. The campus is
spread out and it may take time to locate your classrooms.
o Day, Evening and Distance Education classes start September 2nd, 2014. Weekend
classes begin September 5th, 2014.
 Please be aware that many of our courses are web-enhanced and you will
be expected to utilize the Blackboard Learn 9 (NCC Online) system as part
of your coursework, even if you have not opted to enroll in a Distance
Education class.

If you wish to change your schedule once classes have started
o Drop and/or add Day, Evening, Weekend and Distance Education classes until:
 September 8th, 2014 at 4:30 p.m. IN PERSON AT THE REGISTRAR’S OFFICE,
C Cluster, 1st floor.
 September 8th, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. ONLINE at MyNCC.
o Refund Period
 You can continue to drop classes online until the end of the 3rd week of
classes.
 If you drop below 12 credits within the first three weeks of classes you will
be considered a part-time student, which may affect your eligibility for
financial aid and health/dental insurance.

o
For specific details about refunds, refer to the website. Go to
www.ncc.edu; click on Admissions
Tuition and Costs
Refund Policy.
Withdrawing From Classes: Procedures and Impact on Grades
 If you are registered for a course and stop attending without following the
official withdrawal procedure, it is considered an unofficial withdrawal,
resulting in a grade of “UW”. Grades of “UW” are included in calculating
the GPA and count as an “F”.
 From the beginning of the 4th week until the end of the 9th week of classes,
you are guaranteed permission to officially withdraw from a credit-bearing
course. To do so, you must submit a withdrawal form signed by your
professor to the Registrar’s Office, C Cluster, 1st floor. A “W” (Withdrawal)
will appear on your transcript and is not calculated in your Grade Point
Average (GPA), but can impact your Academic Standing and Financial Aid.
Note: You cannot withdraw from remedial/developmental courses.
 After the ninth week of the semester, an official withdrawal is still
permitted if the professor will allow it.
 You may wish to talk with an advisor and a financial aid counselor about
the impact of withdrawing from a course before doing so.
 If you register for a course and never attend, you will be given a grade of
“NA” (Never Attended). This grade is not calculated in your GPA but, like
the “W” grade, can impact your Financial Aid.
 HOW DO I INCREASE MY CHANCES OF SUCCESS DURING MY FIRST SEMESTER?
Whether you are a student who is entering college for the first time, or you are a transfer
student making a new start at Nassau Community College, the transition period can be
challenging. Fortunately, the services you need to be a successful student are readily available.



Having difficulty in your classes? Discuss it with someone!
o Talk to your professor. S/he is the first contact you should make if you are having
trouble in a class.
o Visit extra help centers like the Writing Center in Bradley Hall or the Math Center
in B-130. In addition, many academic departments have extra help centers
available – ask about them!
o Attend Academic Success workshops offered by the Center for Educational and
Retention Counseling in Nassau Hall, room 19. Knowing how to take notes, study
for tests and manage your time are important skills to develop.
o Visit with an advisor for your major; see pages 6-7 for a listing of advisor locations.
Need help with personal issues? Psychological counseling is located in Nassau Hall,
room 9. Want to get a better idea of your direction? Consider visiting the Career
Counseling Center in Nassau Hall, room 14 or Transfer Office in Nassau Hall, room 4.
Have to work to help pay for school? Need childcare? Are you a Veteran or adult student
with specific needs that may be different from your classmates’? Visit our webpage at
http://www.ncc.edu/campusservices for detailed information about campus supports
available for the various needs you may be experiencing.

HOW DO I GET READY FOR MY SECOND SEMESTER?
Learn your degree requirements
Your degree requirements can be found on the college web site:
o Go to http://collegecatalog.ncc.edu/current/programs
o Liberal Arts students should review the Master Academic Plan (MAP) booklet
given to you at your advisement and registration session. It may also be viewed
on our webpage at www.ncc.edu/masteracademicplan.
o Students in all majors can review their Degree Evaluation in the Student
Records menu in MyNCC.
Read course descriptions in the on-line college catalog
o Go to http://collegecatalog.ncc.edu/current and view the descriptions using
the Course Descriptions link or the printable versions.
Seek academic advisement
Advisement isn’t only to prepare for registration. Take the time to meet with an advisor
for your program. Work together to develop your academic plans, discuss academic
concerns and strategies for success or to clarify academic policies. If necessary, an advisor
can refer you to other campus resources.
Register for classes
You are eligible to register for your next semester according to established priority dates
beginning in November. The more credits you have already earned, the earlier you can
register. Current students have priority over new incoming students, so even if you are in
the last priority group, you should register as soon as you are eligible to take advantage of
the greatest availability of open courses and class times. Waiting too long means
registering for what’s left! Your tuition bill will not be due until after the fall 2014
semester ends.
 Be sure your bill is paid on time!

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT REMEDIAL AND
DEVELOPMENTAL REQUIREMENTS AT NCC?
Remedial and/or developmental courses are a condition of your acceptance and must be taken during your
first semester in attendance. After three unsuccessful attempts in the same remedial or developmental
course, you will be dismissed from the college. For details about these policies and how you can regain
admission to the college, if dismissed, please view the college catalog at http://collegecatalog.ncc.edu.

of RDG 001 and RDG 002 and requires additional class time. Enrolling in RDG 003 provides the opportunity to
complete the reading remedial requirement in a single semester. An Academic Advisor can help you decide
whether this course may be appropriate for you.
#
Students enrolled in RDG 001 or RDG 003 will be retested in class during the first week of school. If your
placement improves as a result of the retest, it is your responsibility to register for the next appropriate
placement level.
**MAT 003: If you placed into MAT 001, you have the option of taking MAT 003. This course is a combination
of MAT 001 and MAT 002 and requires additional class time. Enrolling in MAT 003 gives you the opportunity to
complete the math remedial requirement in a single semester. An Academic Advisor can help you decide
whether this course is appropriate for you.
NON-CREDIT COURSES COUNT TOWARDS FULL-TIME ENROLLMENT
All remedial/developmental courses are non-credit but count as hours for full-time enrollment,
billing, financial aid and health insurance purposes (if applicable).
Example: ENG 001 is a non-credit course but is the equivalent of 3 credits.
