Here are a few recommended films
that were inspired by the true-life stories of women who
brought dignity, power and change to the world. All of these
titles are available here at Burlingame Public Library.
Erin Brockovich (2000) is a feisty young mother who
convinces an attorney to hire her and promptly
stumbles upon a monumental law case against a
giant corporation involving contaminated water. She
helps bring justice along with raising her family and
learning her true potential. Starring Julia Roberts
who won an Oscar for her passionate performance.
North Country (2005) After being physically
assaulted by a coworker, a female miner tries to
fight against the harassment, but none of the other
women will join her case for fear that things will only
get worse. A fictionalized account of the first
successful major sexual harassment case in the U.S.
in 1984. Starring Charlize Theron, Frances
McDormand and Woody Harrelson.

Calendar Girls (2003) When Anne loses her
husband her best friend Chris devises a plan, along
with some of their friends - all fifty-something
women –to make a nude calendar to raise money for
the hospital where he died. This endearing
comedy/drama is based on a true story and stars
Helen Mirren and Julie Walters.
Frida (2003) The life of artist Frida Kahlo, from her
humble upbringing to her worldwide fame and
controversy that surrounded both her and her
husband, Diego Rivera. Director Julie Taymor adds
some whimsical touches to the proceedings. Salma
Hayek is Frida and Alfred Molina plays Rivera.
