Disney princesses and predilection for the color pink in our girls today. The
significance of this seemingly-retro trend toward the ultra-feminine, and the role
the ubiquitous marketing machine plays in packaging and promoting it.
Her previous books include The New York Times best-selling memoir, Waiting for
Daisy; Flux: Women on Sex, Work, Kids, Love and Life in a Half-Changed World;
and the best-selling SchoolGirls: Young Women, Self-Esteem and the
Confidence Gap.
A contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine, Peggy has also written
for such publications as The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Vogue, Elle,
Discover, More, Mother Jones, Salon, O: The Oprah Magazine, and The New
Yorker, and has contributed commentaries to NPR’s All Things Considered. Her
articles have been anthologized multiple times, including in The Best American
Science Writing.
She has been a keynote speaker at numerous colleges and conferences and has
been featured on, among other programs, Nightline, Good Morning America, The
Today Show, NPR’s Fresh Air and Morning Edition and CBC’s As It Happens.

Girls Inc. of the Island City is the Alameda affiliate of the national organization Girls Inc. Since 1964, Girls
Inc. of the Island City has provided the only program in Alameda designed specifically for girls. Girls Inc.
programs “fill in the gap” on issues that parents and schools don’t always have the time or resources to
cover. At Girls Inc., girls and teens are challenged to explore science, math and computers, examine how
money is earned and invested, and to ask questions about and take leadership roles in the world. The
organization provides more than 25,000 hours of programming each year to girls ages 6 to 18. Girls Inc. also
offers a licensed childcare service called Alameda Island Kids for both girls and boys at seven elementary
schools around Alameda, including Bay Farm, Earhart, Edison, Franklin, Lum, and Otis. For more
