International
Communication
and Cultural
Diversity Assistant
Enhancing Cultural Diversity Acceptance Project: The Find Your Voice
workshops provide free and easy opportunities for students (usually
up to 28 different nationalities) to mix, make friends and to discuss
issues around different cultural perspectives and behaviours.
Students who attend at least 6 of the 12 workshops receive a
certificate to add to their international resumes. The final workshop
consists of an international lunch when students bring a contribution
representing their culture’s cuisine. It is always interesting and
delicious! Some project opportunities exist in terms of a) filming the
workshop and promoting cultural appreciation and diversity b)
Promote the workshops around Nathan or Gold Coast campuses with
posters and brochures and at Orientation events: promotional
material should be welcoming of all and encourage participation
from Australian students also c) mentor international students and
develop a Coffee and Conversation Club, or d) develop extra parallel
sessions with Find Your Voice students to further explore further
inter-cultural communication on the campuses.
Education Event
Assistant
Xy provides regular training and events to demonstrate first aid. You
will assist with the planning and management of a first aid duty at a
public event. Greater responsibility for managing events is provided to
volunteers as their confidence grows (the title of 'Deputy Commander'
or 'Commander' is provided to principal event organisers). There will
be dedicated people performing the first aid demonstration; however,
you may assist arranging the logistics (operational plan and
contingency plan) for the event. Events take place at schools, beaches,
racing carnivals, music festivals, fetes and may even take place at a
Griffith University Campus. You may have the opportunity to devise a
location yourself (on or off campus) with approval from staff and
stakeholders, and/or be involved in planning an existing scheduled
event that requires logistical organisation (please inform the divisional
leader of your suggestions).
Learning Club Tutor
Our Learning Clubs are safe and supportive out of school hours learning
environments, where students can access resources and trained, volunteer
tutors who help them with their homework and curriculum content. Learning
Clubs also give parents the opportunity to acquire skills that help them
contribute more fully to their children's learning. By bringing disadvantaged
families and volunteers from the local community together, and through
working collaboratively with community partners, Learning Clubs strengthen
the communities in which they are situated. You may develop the structure
for one days learning club, including lesson plan and after school games to
maximise attention and engagement.

home that have varying needs. You will be committed to developing:

As a XYZ Volunteer, you will be trained to support a wide range of programs.
Our Youth Connections Volunteers can offer valuable knowledge, time and

As an activity, you will have the opportunity to work alongside our Educators
and Youth Workers to plan and execute a recreational or social activity that

XYZ Club Support

Assists students from Year 8 to build their aspirations, increase their
engagement and develop the skills to successfully transition from high school
to further education or work. An opportunity to assist with the formulation,
coordination and implementation of XYZ Clubs. You may devise a
parent/student/teacher activity to build the relationship triad and foster a
culture of mentoring, tutoring and homework completion. Also, consider
integrating work choices into the activity so that children can start thinking
about their pathway to an occupation to motivate study.

Assistant
All people deserve companionship and emotional support. Volunteers help
create an atmosphere of fun, joy and learning to help counter the sometimes
daunting and isolative phase of people transitioning to aged care. Through
your interactions with residents, you will identify our resident’s needs (by
way of informal survey) and report these findings to staff. On staff approval
you will implement any plans you have identified for individuals or groups of
residents that demonstrate XYZvalues.

To assist in the delivery of sport and recreation programs for people with a
disability.
Mentor
You will attend supported and structured meetings that will guide the mentoring
process to ensure you have a platform from which to begin the mentor/mentee
relationship and get to know your mentee well. In addition, you will have the
opportunity to tailor a plan of action that will assist your mentee to feel
comfortable with university processes and surrounds, and connect that mentee in
with community or university activities, clubs and perhaps volunteer work to
expand their connections and improve English literacy.

With this project XYZ would benefit from research into the of Social Media for our
Organisation and the usage by our Service Users, who have limited capacity. This
would involve one on one with the Service Users and at the end of the project a
full report would be required as to the benefits of Social Media Activities to XYZ or
not. An initial observation (4 hours) perhaps to gain insight and then proceed into
the project. Monitoring will be required by Headway to ensure that Social Media
content and posting is continually appropriate for Headway and its Service Users

Descriptions relating to the new award and researching new Industrial Relation
Rulings that now apply to Headway as a Government Funded, Not For Profit
Organisation. We believe that this role would require a large amount of research

An opportunity exists to review and update existing marketing collateral and
associated brochures, and/or generate a photo book of the hospice for public
relations purposes in hospitals.

and deliver goods from and to families. Due to the resources used in training, a 6
month commitment is required to assist our objectives and teamwork.

social contract between each other and the do's and don't of interacting with
other students and members of the community. The film or manual which would
be facilitated would have some interactive activities so that students can learn
appropriate behaviour.

XYZ auspices three not for profit organisations. These organisations cover the
human services sectors of disability, aged care and foster care respectively.
We have services across QLD and are looking to review and develop the strategic
direction of all three organisations/divisions from a marketing perspective. An
opportunity exists to help develop a competitor, and target market analysis of all
three organisations/divisions with the endeavour of identifying future strategic
direction, growth opportunities and viability for the future. You will work closely
with the Marketing and Communications Manager and Corporate Manager. The
objective of your research is to ensure our divisions are responding to community
needs. Professionally, the experience gained from this project will assist you in
developing marketing strategies in any of your future endeavours.
Homework Club

An opportunity exists for a person of Polynesian descent to tutor, mentor and
encourage Pacific Island students to attend and participate in Homework Club.
In addition to including culturally familiar support on-hand to the homework
program, the program will also include 2 cultural/recreational activities per term
scheduled after the homework sessions for homework participants and their
parents. These activities could include Pacific Island and contemporary
dancing/music activities, cultural learning, and sporting activities amongst others.
It is envisaged these sessions will conclude at 5:00pm and parental involvement
will be encouraged. There is also potential to run activities with parents at the
same time as the homework session on topics such as budgeting, health, or other
relevant programs.

This position is to support a young man with an intellectual disability to start a
coffee delivery "business" on Logan Campus. The position would work with
Aidan's carer to develop a small business "package" which would enable Aidan to
approach staff to ask if they would like coffee and earn money in tips to save for
things he would like to purchase.

The Service Learning office needs to identify a range of fundraising ideas to
develop future projects for Community Internship student participation. This
position is for an intern to identify different sponsorship and granting
opportunities that might support the provisioning of staff and other costs towards
enhancing the range of Community Internship positions able to be offered to
students.
Research Assistant
An internship is offered to explore and document the role of activism in fighting
for a variety of human rights on global, national and local levels. There are many
activism initiatives that students taking the Community Internship course in the
future could engage with to inform fellow students , university staff and the
community of issues that need to be addressed and can be resolved through a
range of collaborative peaceful activism activities. This internship may result in
the initiating of one or more Griffith-based activism clubs such as Amnesty
International.

Gala Dinner
The Service Learning office would like to hold a Gala Dinner before the end of
2012 to affirm Community Partners who have participated in the program, and to
affirm students who have engaged in the program in 2012. To hold such a dinner
will require obtaining sponsorship from appropriate organisations to cover the
costs of the event. This activity would create the model for an annual event.

The Service Learning Office has funding to develop Leadership Clubs in
disadvantaged schools in Logan and surrounding areas. A full-time paid
coordinator for this position has been appointed, and four internships are
available to support the development of school-based Leadership clubs.
Homework Help

An opportunity exists to assist library staff to manage the Homework Help Club.
Up to 20 children per session may attend, and Library staff will be in attendance
to support you at all times. Various tasks are required to tutor school children
between Grades 4 and 12: You may assist with a variety of homework needs and
assignments by encouraging children to understand the need for homework
strategies including time management, preparation, problem solving, and learning
to work in a structured environment; you may connect children to the library's
online and print learning resources to assist with homework requirements; and
you may assist with evaluation of the Homework Help Club and recommend
possible strategies for further improvement and smooth operation within
XYZLibraries.
XYZ Assistant
An opportunity exists to assist library staff to manage the XYZ program - a free
language and literacy program at XYZLibrary for primary-school children, assisting
them to become our community’s future confident readers and leaders. Children
from prep-school to Grade 5 are the main visitors to this program and up to 15
children per session may attend. Volunteers will assist library staff listen to
children read, as well as read to children. It is a one-on-one, personalised service,
recognising that all children have different reading needs and levels. Volunteers
will: provide assistance with reading strategies and decoding words; assist with
determining the child's comprehension of the text; build up the children’s sight
word vocabulary; assist with providing library resources appropriate to their
reading age; motivate and encourage success in reading; and evaluate the
program and recommend possible strategies for further improvement and
smooth operation within the library.

An opportunity exists to be involved in community development projects being
undertaken by the Student Practicum Unit within the XYZ Community Centre.
Your role will be to report to the Manger of the Student Placement Unit. The
'student unit' is a group of human services and social work students completing
their field placement requirement within their degree program at the centre. You
will provide invaluable support to the 'student unit' through being involved in the
formulation, implementation and evaluation of a community development
projects. Indicative tasks may include enhancing support networks for single
parents or recent immigrants; increasing the profile of the centre's community
garden as a place to reduce cost of living; or developing the emergency relief
capacity of the centre. First and foremost your role is to support the 'student unit',
however, your responsibility and autonomy to be creative and work
developmentally from the centre will increase in line with your understanding of
community development principles and commitment to the organisation/local
community.

Extracurricular activities after school serve to reinforce learning and create a
space for young people to socialise and have fun. You will have the opportunity to
work with the support of a homework coordinator and be involved in fostering an
environment where learning is valued and is also fun. The Centre provides space
and resources for games (skipping, balls, and Ping-Pong etc), and assistance with
homework. The role will report to the Homework Coordinator and provide
assistance as deemed required. You will be involved in direct work with primary
aged children and their families. This work may entail organising paperwork,
ensuring that children and parents feel welcome to the centre, direct assistance
with homework and creating fun craft and other activities for participants. Skills
required are the ability to reflect on how the process of interacting with the
children/parents is going and building rapport with children and their families.
First and foremost your role is to support the homework coordinator, however,
your responsibility and autonomy to be creative with the program will increase in
line with your understanding and commitment to the organisation/local
community.

XYZ will be introducing the certificate 1 in Work Education, which has been
specifically designed for people with disabilities, to give them the opportunity and
skills to volunteer in a workplace.
During your placement at XYZ you will assist our clients to complete their
certificate in Work Education and accompany clients to our Centre, to observe
and report progress back to XYZ staff. The activity will involve co-constructing the
education plan as this is a new course for clients at XYZ.
Playgroup

An opportunity exists to assist our playgroup facilitator in the planning and
delivery of XYZ's Rainbow Playgroup. At Rainbow playgroup children have fun,
learn about the world and their place in it, through play and interactions with
others in a safe environment. Playgroup is for parents or carers and their children
up to 8 years.
Youth Club

An opportunity exists to assist our youth workers in the planning and delivery of
our Youth Club program. Youth Club is an after school program based at XYZ Park.
Youth Club provides a safe place where young people can hang out, make new
friends, receive assistance with their homework and participate in a variety of
activities such as sports, games, art, movies, video games and music.

An opportunity exists to promote two XYZ programs. The XYZ program provides
24 hour care to recipients for up to 5+ days at a time in our community home-like
setting to enable carers to take a break from their caring role. The Community
Visitors Scheme enables volunteers to visit people in an Aged Care Facility. The
promotion of both these programs is required to lift participation rates and recruit
new volunteers. Fundamentally, you will obtain a clear understanding of both
services before beginning your marketing campaign. You will spend at least two
hours gaining knowledge about both services. This project will require you to
collect resources to promote the service, and will involve visitation to other
organisations and community support groups.

We have an opportunity for someone to design and if possible build a website for
the XYZ. There is an existing digital town square model, but hasn't been
progressed due to capacity. We are looking for a website which is accessible for
children and families, but with a membership level where we can have resources
for professionals. This website will become vital for the XYZ to communicate and
promote rights of children, and to share the learning and work that the XYZ is
doing.
Event Management
Assistant
We have an opportunity for someone to assist the XYZ Group to run a Community
Event promoting the importance of play, similar (but smaller) to Payday in the UK.
This event will be run in collaboration with a number of stakeholders and will be for
children and their families. This will be first of what will become an annual event,
so it is hoped that a toolkit can be developed for future events which could be run
in other areas.

We have an opportunity for someone to assist in the evaluation of some of the
XYZ's DVD projects. The XYZis producing a number of DVD's and are planning to
place them online. Before we launch these DVD's online we would like to do some
research about making resources available online, what the best approach is and
how to measure the effectiveness of the approach. This evaluation will influence
the way that the XYZ shares its work in the future.

Nutrition Project
Officer
An opportunity exists to undertake a phase by phase project management process
which will research, consult, design and deliver a nutrition information session one for Somali mums and children and one for mixed group of sub-Saharan African
women and children. At all phases of this project you will be culturally sensitive to
the needs of others when integrating cultural norms with healthy, nutritional
information. The targeted outcomes are the delivery of 2 x 3-4 hour sessions,
during September school holidays in Goodna & Inala.
Legal Officer
Your activity will be to develop and/or update a number of policies and procedures
including the Volunteer Training Manual. You will compile existing volunteer
policies and procedures into a professional training manual for new volunteers. This
will reflect changes in legislation and OH & S laws. Risk management will be
identified and procedures will be put in place to ensure risk is assessed and
minimised whilst maximising client outcomes.

Your activity with the direction of staff will be to: A) Promote the organisation
across all communication channels i.e. brochures, newsletters, Facebook
(mediated), and media releases - review of existing and development of new; B)
Identify methods to fundraise; and C) Culminate your research into a Marketing and
Communications Manual for succession planning and ease of adoption by future PR
volunteers. You will be instrumental in driving the growth of the organisation and
ensuring KPIs are met. These KPIs reflect a waiting list of mentees requiring
Volunteer Aunties and Uncles, so your support in growing the organisations
volunteer base and revenue will help link mentees to mentors.
XYZ Support
Worker
Your activity will be to help social workers follow-up mentors and provide hints, tips
and helpful resources. This may include example interactions and ice-breakers, how
to build a working relationship with the family and child, and various activities and
games children of various ages enjoy to ensure the mentee/mentor relationship is
one of fun and learning. If you continue with Aunties and Uncle beyond the
Internship, an option exists to become a mentor yourself.
XYZ Assistant
An opportunity exists to assist our drivers transport clients to medical
appointments and shopping by providing a personable and caring approach. You
may assist our clients/members as they enter and exit vehicles and help carry their
shopping and parcels as required. It will be necessary to answer mobile telephones
and liaise with stakeholders. You will record statistics, lift walking aids and follow
directions from transport staff in order to understand processes.

An opportunity exists to assist our co-ordinator in formulating recruitment
strategies for new volunteers and to implement approved recommendations
gathered from existing volunteers and your own observations. You may update
volunteer brochures and posters and assist with social networking or

XYZ has a fast growing community transport service and a fleet of over 30 vehicles.
We currently arrange and provide transport for over 140 trips per week. Transport
provided may be in the form of group activities such as shopping and swimming,
and individual transport to medical appointments. We provide the service to clients
via XYZ staff, volunteers and taxi's. We are currently assessing our processes around
XYZ drivers, driving procedures, client interaction and management. We are also in
the process of applying for our Operator Accreditation with Qld Transport and Main
Roads; this will form a major component of the student's role at XYZ. The role will
require the design and fulfilment of policies and procedures manual for XYZ's
transport service's drivers. This will form a component of our Operator
Accreditation which the student will be engaged in to help us navigate and fulfil the
necessary requirements.
Event Coordinator
You will gain a broad insight into XYZ philosophy, the services provided, the factors
influencing domestic violence and broad statistics regarding DV. Your activity will be
to support existing events: DV Prevention Week, Annual Birthday of Organisation,
White Ribbon Day etc. You will have the opportunity to influence how funds are
raised, and liaise with various stakeholders to secure the logistics of various events
as they are scheduled.
Film Producer
You will gain a broad insight into XYZ philosophy, the services provided and the
factors influencing domestic violence. Your activity will be to produce a personable
film that may be entitled, "A Day in the Life of XYZ". This film will be 10mins long
and will be used for inducting new volunteers/staff, raising awareness of XYZ
services, and as a tool to promote philanthropic donations to XYZ. Please consider
the diplomatic nature of the content that needs to be produced. You will be
mentored by staff to steer your production efforts and creative talents.

Co-ordinator and
Design Assistant
A physical space and social enterprise is required within the community that raises
awareness of sustainability. This space will serve as a place of interest and
centralised sustainability knowledge network. This will link the online sustainability
calculator generated via XYZ with personable guidance and mentoring on how to be
sustainable. Your activity will be to organise meetings and networks; staff the hub
and provide a face to the public presence to guide people through
ethical/sustainable purchase/decision-making process and to generate counter
displays. You may help prepare proposals for funding of activities and setup the hub
as a welcoming place.

Assisting people in households and businesses to live and work more sustainably;

helping to conduct a no-plastic-bags project in Samford (consulting businesses,
Facilitator Assistant organising media releases); and
assisting with the organisation of a Local Artisans Market. This will help raise the

within aged and disability community care (previously XYZ) will be in a split funded
community care system and greater reporting of financial indicators may be
required by our service providers. Until 30 June 2012 service providers have
contracted with the Queensland Government to provide community care services
to frail elderly and younger people with a disability. From 1 July 2012, service
providers will contract with the Queensland Government to provide community
care services for younger people (mainly under 65), and with the Australian
Government to provide community services for older people (mainly over 65).
Service providers are expected to identify specific unit costing for the provision of a
range of services to each target group, such as domestic assistance, personal care,
social support, respite care, assessment, nursing care, allied health care, centrebased day care and transport.

Cultural Access Guide. The project began a few years ago but the guide requires
updating and expansion. This project emanated from quality standards relating to

Access Guide is designed to provide a working document for generic service
providers to work together with Indigenous specific services. It will also assist
generic service providers to provide culturally appropriate services to this target
group.

Queensland community aged care service providers. These service providers are
required to develop and maintain internal policies and practices to support clients'
rights and responsibilities. Service providers are expected to utilise a continuous

XYZ Volunteer
The program provides a mobile outreach and health service to
substance affected people including young people at risk of
homelessness and disadvantaged groups in inner city Brisbane.
The XYZ van offers a fully equipped on board health centre, providing
dressings for minor wounds, checkups, referrals to other agencies and
support in gaining housing if required. Clients of XYZ include youth at
risk of homelessness and other disadvantaged groups. The program is
run by full time coordinators and staffed by a range of professionals
including Centrelink officers, nurses and counsellors and volunteers.
The program runs in Brisbane city operating on certain weekdays.
XYZ Volunteer
The XYZ reaches out to provide support, information, referrals and
transport to individuals or groups of young people on the streets, who
are at risk of becoming homeless and/or dependant on alcohol and
other illicit drugs.

Any student who wishes to play a role in improving the involvement of
current Griffith University students in their local community is
encouraged to apply to undertake a community engagement activity on
behalf of Student Linx. Student Leaders will be responsible for the
conceptualisation and delivery of an activity which engages their group
of students with an aspect of the community they wouldn’t have
otherwise had the opportunity to experience. Examples of community
engagement activities include volunteering at a community garden;
taking students to the EKKA or Gold Coast Show; and entering a team
into the Bridge to Brisbane or Gold Coast City Marathon. Larger scale
events can be considered for students undertaking Service Learning.
Research Assistant
Workforce Development Plans, programs and initiatives Research. This
project entails conducting research on best workforce development
plan practice in the corporate and not for profit industries and would
cover such areas as workforce planning, career development,
recruitment and retention, knowledge retention, engagement and
training. Report on findings will be required.
HR Project Officer
HR Manual Update. The HR manual has been designed to provide
supervisors and manager the basic tools and resources needed to
administer their employee’s HR related needs. It provides quick access
to important information and resources to help to complete these dayto-day staff related activities. The content of this manual should not be
construed as policy; rather it should be used in conjunction with the HR
policies in place.
This project involves reviewing and updating the HR Manual for
supervisors and managers to simplify the "people management" part of
their job by summarizing regulations, policies and procedures.
Survey Assistant
Survey development and Analysis Project – the project will cover the
identification of the key aspects that inspire male workers to
commence and maintain a career with the health and community
services industry.
A questionnaire / survey is to be designed to be used as a tool to collect
primary data relevant to the research topic. Secondary sources of
information such as academic articles and journals are also to be
reviewed. The data needs to be collated, analysed and the findings
detailed in a report.

XYZ employment service is looking to produce an electronic brochure to

brochure and project manage the process to a completed outcome.

be presented for subsequent volunteers may also be an activity.

You will ensure that XYZ is clean and presentable to ensure our patrons
feel comfortable with their accommodation. As a 'Make a Meal' activity
you may plan a communal meal, dessert or biscuits for the children or
families on premises. You may document a flyer and menu to advertise
your forthcoming activity and with the guidance of staff approach the
families to invite them to participate in cooking and/or eating. Children
may be particularly interested in helping cook a cake, muffins or
designer biscuits. Students studying Food Safety or dietician may also
develop recipe book or food safety charts/documents.

visitation support to vulnerable and isolated families. You will help the
family develop a plan for their children in terms of access to various
services. You will be trained by the organisation in risk management
procedures with a view to providing visitations independently when
you are comfortable and appropriately trained. You may assist in
documenting tailored plans for the family based on their requirements.
Some parents may experience low literacy or a disability which requires
extra guidance in terms of supporting these parents to identify and
access services.
