Director of Rugby Welcome
‘Great game, in good company’
Welcome to TSS Rugby for 2016. The School is very proud of our strong Rugby history with
15 Wallabies and 41 Australian Schoolboys to date passing through the school. We are
looking forward to another very exciting season ahead.
TSS Rugby is a fantastic team sport which caters for a diverse range of body shapes. We
strive to challenge boys of all ages and abilities to work towards improving their rugby skills
and fitness. At TSS, we also believe that Rugby is an excellent medium through which boys
are able to learn valuable life skills such as sportsmanship, interaction with other boys from
different schools and cultures, as well as leadership, commitment and discipline on and off
the field.
Coaches provide a vital part of the TSS Rugby experience. The boys have the opportunity to
work with world class coaches, specialist defence coaches, as well as position specific training and mentoring programs. Through our experienced coaching, we endeavour to develop
a number of core skills throughout the season which include, catch and pass, tackling, defence, rucking and mauling, whilst following a ‘team structure’.
TSS Rugby could not function efficiently without the ongoing assistance of parents and
sponsors. In particular, the Rugby Supporters Group perform a huge variety of tasks which
are essential to the overall functioning of our program. I encourage you to become involved
with the TSS Rugby Supporters in whatever capacity you can manage. It is a great way to
meet new parents and support your son’s Rugby program.
I hope that the 2016 TSS Rugby Season is an enjoyable experience for both players and parents. Your support for TSS Rugby is welcomed and greatly appreciated.

Selection Policy and Weekly Meetings
Teams are selected in conjunction with the team coaches, Age Group Coordinators as well
as the Director of Rugby. The selection is based on the player’s performance, attendance at
training, attitude during training and games, and to suit the balance of the team. Listed on
the TSS Rugby website are:

‘Position Specific Skills’ - provides key technical skills for each position which selections are based.

‘Player Feedback’ - where understanding cannot be reached between player/parent
and coach.
There will be a Rugby meeting every Thursday at the conclusion of Assembly in the Annand
Theatre, where information on upcoming events and the weekend’s fixture will be distributed. It is essential all rugby players attend this short meeting each week. Team lists will be
posted on the TSS Rugby website, no later than Thursday evening on a weekly basis.
In the case of the 1st XV, all selected members of the Development Squad will be given a
preseason trial match. All rowers & cricketers must give their term 1 sport priority and
attend all sessions, as they will still be given a trial with the 1st XV and equally considered
for the preseason tour.
1.
All players should have the opportunity to play in the highest team possible.
2.
Players must be selected in positions that are suitable for their body type and
strength. This is of paramount importance for players selected in the forwards.
3.
Within reason a ‘no train – no play’ policy across all teams is adopted, but keeping in mind players commitments to camps, services, educational or cultural
school requirements etc.
4.
All players must be given an equal opportunity to play rugby for TSS. Reserves
in the lowest team must play at least half a match.
5.
A player may not play in a lower grade if selected in a higher grade.
6.
Reserves must have played in a previous match.
7.
Players should not be dropped more than one grade per week.
8.
All players will be advised of the reason/s why they have been relegated.
9.
Any player may be selected for the 1st XV but if not required he must go back to
his age group.
10. A player sent from the field will usually incur at least a one match suspension;
the seriousness of the dismissal must be discussed with the referee, Director of Rugby
and Captain of Rugby.
