Global Missions Georgia to Georgia Sponsor-a-Child February 9 - 16, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm, Fellowship Hall The children in the nation of Georgia have such hopeful and loving spirits despite their circumstances. It is hard to comprehend so many children sharing the same clothes, or being carried for lack of a wheelchair, or begging on the street, or not having epilepsy medicine. Through our Sponsor-a-Child program, we can provide a year’s worth of warm clothing, food, medicine and care for a child in need for $300. Please stop by the Fellowship Hall February 9 through 16 to learn more and sponsor a child. Or visit us online at www.georgiamissions.org. Pastoral Care Galatians 6 reminds us that we are called to “bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.” This January marked the completion of several months of intense training and group building for our newest group of Stephen Ministers. Stephen Ministers are not counselors or therapists, but rather are lay ministers who have been trained to come along-side another for a period of time and offer compassionate, Christian care-giving to individuals struggling with life transitions, illness, and grief. This year’s training class was led by Charles Schoen. Our newest Stephen Ministers are Lynn Banks, Ray Baskette, Stefanie Box, David Cunningham, Angela Davis, Penny France, Jeremy Garlington, Lee Goble, Annette Meyer, Todd Sharp, Chris Sodemann, and John Warren. I hope you’ll thank these folks for their wonderful service! If you are interested in hearing about whether a Stephen Minister might be helpful to you or a loved one, please contact Karla Daniel at karlad@prumc.org. Family Mission Trip to Nicaragua Two days after Christmas, a team of 11 families (40 people) set out to serve others for a week as part of the Nicaragua Family Mission Trip. Having never been to Nicaragua before, I stepped on the plane with an open mind, and no expectations. I now realize that the trip exceeded any expectations I could have gone in with, by far. We stayed at Piñas de Paz, a self-sustaining pineapple farm located in Nicaragua’s beautiful mountains and owned by full-time missionaries Robbie and Murray Lathrop. Our team worked on six different construction projects in the village of Ticuantepe, but the most important part of the trip was not the physical labor. Establishing long-term relationships is what makes any mission trip meaningful in the long run. Through hosting VBS for the workers’ families, organizing a festival for hundreds of kids, visiting and praying with patients in a women’s and children’s hospital in Managua, and home visits in the community, we were blessed with many opportunities to connect with adults and children alike. Many team members could speak Spanish, so it was cool to witness the direct interactions and lack of communication barrier between the Nicaraguans and “los gringos” (as they called us). Even though I was able to converse in Spanish, my favorite part of the trip required no verbal communication at all—seeing the beautiful smiles on the kids’ faces, reflecting genuine happiness, that would appear every time I would spin them around and around, give them rides on my shoulders, lift them high into the air, or show them pictures of themselves on my camera. I think I speak for everyone on the team, participants ranging in age from eight to fifty-three, when I say that we are returning with happier hearts, memories to last a lifetime, and a desire to serve again, whether here in our own community or back in Ticuantepe.
