UNIVERSAL MUSIC PUBLISHING GROUP HAS SIGNED A LONG-TERM EXCLUSIVE,
WORLDWIDE AGREEMENT TO ADMINISTER THE PUBLISHING INTERESTS OF WORLDRENOWNED, MULTIPLE GRAMMY® WINNING SINGER/SONGWRITER ELTON JOHN.
Superstar deal brings all of Elton John’s catalogue,
both prior and future works, into the UMPG family.
Through this deal, the company will administer all
his songs written between 1974 and 1992. More than
250 copyrights are covered by the arrangement, all of
which were previously administered by Warner
Chappell. In particular, UMPG looks forward to aggressively promoting Elton’s catalogue for worldwide synchronisation opportunities.
The rights to administer all Elton’s songs written
between 1992 and the present day, including those on his
new, 43rd studio album, Peachtree Road, released on
November 8, will come to UMPG in 18 months’ time. All
new works written after the release of Peachtree Road are
included in UMPG’s agreement.
Universal Music Publishing Group owns the copyrights

With a career spanning five decades and 60 million

pleased to announce that they have signed
Betty Wright to an exclusive worldwide copublishing deal.
Wright, along with her long time collaborator, Angelo Morris, most recently worked
with Joss Stone on Mind, Body & Soul as the
co-writer/producer, a project that landed
Stone a #1 debut on the UK charts, gold certification in the U.S., Austria, and New
Zealand and platinum in the UK. In a strategy
to have Stone record obscure soul classics
using seasoned musicians from the Miami
soul scene, Wright personally recruited the
session musicians. Stone, Wright, Steve

In her legendary career, Wright has
penned and/or performed many hit songs

Lovemaker,” “Shoorah! Shoorah!,” “It’s Hard to
Stop (Doing Something When It’s Good to You),”

It,” and “Slip and Do It.” Wright received a
GRAMMY® for the song “Where Is the Love?”
(which she co-wrote with KC of KC and the
Sunshine Band) in 1974 and in 1981, Wright
collaborated with Stevie Wonder on “What
Are You Gonna Do With It?” which proved to
be a substantial hit.
Commented David Renzer, Chairman
& CEO, Universal Music Publishing Group:
“Betty has the soul of a poet with the
incredible musicality and melodic sense to
complement the lyrical stories she creates.
We are so proud to welcome the legendary
Betty Wright to the UMPG family.”

RINGSIDE AND FAN_3
Ringside
Fan_3
Ringside is the creation of Scott (singer / songwriter) and Balt (beat master) - two kindred musical
spirits whose first crossed paths at a birthday party
for Timothy Leary. Scott and Balt wrote, engineered
and produced their entire self-titled debut album
(Geffen) due to hit stores on April 5th.
Blessed with the gift of rhyme and her 16 year old
instinct for honesty, fan_3 paves the way for a new
generation of pop artists with her debut Geffen
album. She calls herself fan _3 because that's
exactly what she is: a 100% all-out fan of great
musical artists, especially female trios like TLC,
Destiny's Child and the Dixie Chicks. Her album Let
Me Clear My Throat is due in stores in April.
08 • UMPG
UMPG Nashville’s Pat Higdon signed Blue Merle to a publishing deal and spent close to a year developing and working
with the band while pushing for and securing their label deal
with Island Def Jam. The band are already the most added at Hot
A/C on the heels of the release of their debut album, Burning in
the Sun (IDJ).
Blue Merle is a unique blend of musical colors. While the
instrumentation leans toward bluegrass, the sound is resolutely
and refreshingly a new take on Pop/Rock with a nod to Coldplay
and Dave Matthews Band.
Produced by Stephen Harris (U2, Dave Matthews Band,
Kula Shaker), its sound is immediately inviting and disarmingly
nuanced. The music carries the sort of inventiveness and depth
of the feeling found only in the best rock songwriting.
With Blue Merle opening for the likes of J.J. Cale, Badly
Drawn Boy, and playing festivals ranging from Farm Aid to
Bonnaroo, this ecelectic band could turn into the diverse
Nashville rock scene’s development story of the year.
The Hip-Hop Violinist
Miri Ben Ari is “The Hip-Hop
Violinist.” Her co-write of “Jesus Walks”
on Kanye West’s The College Dropout garnered GRAMMY nominations for Best Rap
Song and Song of the Year. Miri worked
closely with producer Kanye West writing,
producing, arranging and performing all of
the strings on the smash debut album for
the superstar rapper-producer. Miri is the
centerpiece of Twista’s smash single and
video “Overnight Celebrity.” Miri has been
touring as a featured artist with Kanye
throughout the U.S. and Europe.
Miri has been in the studio creating
her debut Hip Hop/R&B album, a fusion of
her soulful strings with hard-edged hip-hop production. Kanye West has lent production and
rhymes to several tracks on her album, and will release it on his label through Universal
Records. Other guests include: Mya, Scarface, Fabolous, Lil’ Mo, Joe Budden, Twista,
Pharoahe Monch, Anthony Hamilton and Miri’s own urban classical sound.

Universal Music Publishing Group’s Film and Television
Department finished off 2004 with strong results. We experienced tremendous growth in a few media sectors that had
traditionally been only minor contributors to our overall
income. The expansion of the Ringtones, (see article below),
and the Home Video market helped to ease the downward
pressures on synchronization licensing fees our industry has
faced in the area of advertising and motion pictures. Early
indications are that 2005 should be another solid year of
earnings growth.
Our team continues to market our writers and their catalogs though innovative packages and the use of technology.
The Universal R&B 20 disc box-set has just been completed.
This package is a companion to our Pop box set, and will feature such song titles: “Turn On Your Love Light”, “Respect”,
“Hurt So Bad”, “Soul Man”, “Ain’t No Sunshine”, “Let’s Stay
Together”, “Midnight Train To Georgia” to name but a few.
This package will be made available to music supervisors,
advertisers, and film music executives.
We have also just launched a new series of “keyword”
samplers directed toward the advertising community. These
compilations focus around a key theme or sentiment in the
lyrics of all each song selected. The first of the series
“Feeling Good” is available now.

UMPG Licenses Over 100 Ringtone Companies
By Guest Columnist: Gary Miller, VP Motion Picture & Television Clearance/Licensing, UMPG Los Angeles
While the music business continues to face
challenges on multiple fronts, those in the know
are more than just a little familiar with the word
ringtone. Ringtones, and now the fledgling next
generation Ringtune and Ringback markets
offer the promise of exponential growth over the
next couple of years as the next wave of mobile
phones saturate the US market. UMPG and
Rondor Music have a combined total approaching 100 licenses in place with the key Ringtone
aggregators and providers. UMPG has seen
unprecedented continued growth in this key
market area, and while we may see the market
14 • UMPG
begin to level off, it will continue to show growth
and offer a sustained revenue stream in the
foreseeable future. The key to harnessing that
growth opportunity and continued revenue
stream is the availability of current chart hits,
particularly in the rap/hip-hop genres. We are
often dealing with a relatively small window of
opportunity, so get those splits figured out and
get those songs turned in because if it’s on the
Hot 100 chart for record sales, there’s also a
good chance the same song in will end up on the
Ringtone chart, and that means an additional
sale has been made!

Critically acclaimed hip hop artist K-OS' second album, Joyful Rebellion (EMI

chart. This is the highest SoundScan debut ever for a Canadian urban artist. The album
has also been certified gold in Canada. Joyful Rebellion is available in the U.S. through

According to ballerstatus.net, 'Crabbuckit' and Joyful Rebellion have already made

the fact that they beat out Black Eyed Peas, Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z for those
spots. 'Crabbuckit' was the # 3 most downloaded song overall in the entire store.

OVER THIS PAST YEAR, THE KILLERS HAVE CLOCKED SOME SERIOUS MILEAGE, PLAYING NEARLY
EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD - AND SOME VENUES TWICE. AS THE BAND GRACEFULLY CARRIES
AN UNRELENTING TOUR SCHEDULE, AND PREPARE FOR THEIR NEXT TREK, THEIR PLATINUM PLUS
DEBUT ALBUM HOT FUSS (ISLAND) HAS NOW SOLD MORE THAN 1.5 MILLION COPIES WORLDWIDE.
The Las Vegas rockers scored three GRAMMY nominations including,
Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song for “Somebody Told Me” and Best Rock
Performance By A Duo or Group.
And fans are delighted that the Killers have unveiled new material for their
sold out Shockwave NME Awards Tour in the UK. While fans shouldn't anticipate any drastic changes to the band's British-influenced, hook-laden indie
rock, lead singer Brandon Flowers says they should expect the band's sound
to follow what he calls a natural evolution.
"It's changing a little bit. I think we're getting better. Everyone who has
heard the new songs is saying [the next
album is] going to be even better than the first
one and that's the natural thing that should
happen," he said.
U2 producer Flood and Swervedriver producer Alan Moulder will work with the Killers
to demo new material once they complete
dates in Japan. The band have completed
three songs so far including ‘I Won't Let You
Down, ‘Daddy's Eyes’ and ‘It's Only Natural’.
The Killers had tossed around a fall 2005
release date for their second album, but with
their second single off Hot Fuss, "Mr.
Brightside," still gaining momentum the band
remain dedicated to their debut offering.

Ringing in the New Year With New Technology
The music market in Brazil has undergone a rapid evolution as the ring-tone and real-tone markets take over. Out of a population of around 182 million people, Brazil had over 65 million cell
phone users in 2004. That’s up more than 41% from 2003. A growth in ring-tone downloads
has gone hand-in-hand with the growth in the cell phone consumers. UMPG Brazil saw early
the benefits of getting on board this new means of song distribution. They have managed to
stay at the top of the game, and in Brazil’s official ranking, Universal came in third in the ring
tone market. With more new technology just around the corner, and UMPG Brazil’s focus on
new technology, the future looks bright.

UMPG/DAWNRAID PUBLISHING SECURE MORE NZ TALENT
The groundbreaking joint venture between Universal Music
Publishing Australia and Dawn Raid Entertainment, this week announced
a series of promising Hip Hop and R&B signings in Mareko, Savage, Devolo,
Alphrisk (performing together as Deceptikonz), Nate D and Aaradhna.
With a gold selling debut album in New Zealand and collaborations
with The Beatnutz and Inspectah Deck under his belt, New Zealand's
undisputed battle MC champion Mareko has just unleashed his epic
debut 'White Sunday' on the Australian market. Already making waves
in Australia with his debut single 'Stop, Drop & Roll', Mareko is well on
his way to emulating Scribe's phenomenal trans-tasman success.
Meanwhile, Mareko's Deceptikonz comrade Savage, has just
added the final touches to his eagerly anticipated debut album
'Moonshine'. After guesting on the massive selling and multi-award
winning Scribe track 'Not Many-The Remix' and the albums lead single
'Swing' already setting radio request lines alight, anticipation is high for
what will be the blockbuster New Zealand Hip Hop release of 2005.
With both Savage and Mareko releasing solo records, one
would be forgiven for assuming that their South Auckland based
crew, Deceptikonz would be taking a break over 2005. Far from it in
fact, with the D-Konz already confirmed on the national Big Day Out
tour alongside the Beastie Boys and The Streets and the follow up to
2002's record breaking 'Elimination' currently being prepared, 2005
will be the D-Konz biggest yet.

Not to be outdone, twenty year old singer-songwriter Aaradnha will
